I installed Mint onto my SSd and do it make a difference. It flies, it makes Windows 8 look like a snail. Sadly I will have to put windows 8 back on and go back tot he old drive for Mint. I do have a idea, which is to dual boot Windows and mint on the SSD, put a couple of bits of software for windows on the SSd and then use my 500Gb seagate Hybrid for the rest.

The problem is to do that I have to do a complete install of windows from scratch.

The other way is to buy another SSD at some point.

It always surprises me when I see they still recommend the 32 bit version.
I only use 32bit on one 11 year old Dell (lightweight distros). Every other computer has been 64bit for a couple of years.

For a good guide to dual booting both Windows 7 and 8 and any Linux based system see

It is strange since i don't think any 32 bit machines are sold now.

Thanks, but got windows 8 and Mint working now. kind off.
I split the SSD unit, got windows on party and Mint on the other, then most of windows software will go onto the seagate hybrid drive.

The problem i am having at the moment is graphic Drivers, I get corruption on some websites in Mint. I have got a AMD HD 6570 graphics card and yesterday I tried using the terminal to download some drivers, I managed to download and install beta, but then I could not change the background.

Oh how I wish I went to linux instead of Windows when I left the Amiga, if Linux was around then.

i would not have lost what I knew about CLI, saying that Linux is different anyway.

I presume you looked in Driver Manager first, to see if Mint was offering any alternative video drivers, before you started down the command line route?

I know, I know. But in my defence Mint was asking for it this time. I draw the line at system freezes I'm afraid.

Ahh, welcome to my world.

Love Mint but it doesnt like my hardware Same thing has happened to me with the last few releases of Mint. 32 or 64, mate or cin or any version of it

I think a lot of these Distros, should stop this obsession with regular 6mth ish releases, just do rolling, or LTS ones.

I use Skype for work, on Linux of course.

Two years ago I made keybindings to mute and unmute the microphone. So I can talk to people in the room without the people at the other end hearing.

(It's too fiddly using the Skype mute button, I might be on another workspace looking at a browser window for example.)

Code:
xbindkeysrc

"amixer set Mic 100% unmute"
  control + mod1 + i
"amixer set Mic 0% mute"
  control + mod1 + o
I could see the microphone muting on the mixer, and as belt and braces I also set the volume of the microphone to 0% during mute, 100% unmuted.

Today I found out that this doesn't stop Skype sending microphone audio

A quick Google resulted in this:

Code:
xbindkeysrc

"amixer set Capture cap"
  control + mod1 + i
"amixer set Capture nocap"
  control + mod1 + o
I've tested it on the Skype test call, and it mutes the microphone audio sent across Skype

Since reinstalling Mint 15 I notice that minimised browsers, applications etc. no longer show in the launch bar at the bottom of the screen. I worked out how to correct it last time it happened but for the life of me, I can't remember how. Does anyone have any suggestions, apart from Aricept?

Well you've got to post your solution, seeing as none of us here had a clue obviously.

It was just a matter of switching on the appropriate applets (Panel Launcher, System Tray). Why they weren't on by default is a mystery.

Ubuntu upgrade

Can anyone please help me with an Ubuntu upgrade?

My pc has 2 hard drives and if I boot up and let it get on with it I will end up with windows XP.

If on the other hand I press F12 when my Dell logo appears I get directed to a menu where I can select Ubuntu.

At the moment I have an old version of Ubuntu (10.04 LTS) and whenever I carry out updates I am reminded that there is a newer version available.

I'm thinking of upgrading but I am concerned that it might do something to my xp, I had problems in the past when I originally installed Ubuntu with it changing the MBR - I think it was called.

So if I do the upgrade will it just do what's necessary to change my Ubuntu version and leave everything else alone?

Thanks.

At the moment you are using the Windows system to choose which OS to boot into.
Linux usually uses grub to choose which OS to boot, but to do that grub has to be installed onto the MBR of the drive that is booted first.

Whether the upgrade affects that depends on where grub is installed at the moment.
If grub is on the Ubuntu drive, then the upgrade shouldn't change that. But if you originally installed grub to the MBR of the XP drive, and then subsequently got rid of it, it may be that the upgrade may try to reinstall grub.

but even if that happens it will certainly not affect XP, and grub will offer you the choice between XP and Ubuntu, and it's easy to make XP the default.
And if you end up with the grub screen, and really don't like it, it's easy to get back to the Windows system provided you have an XP disk.

Thanks for your post it's been very helpful.

It's made me think about the best way for me to go about getting the latest version of Ubuntu and installing it.

Because I've been having some problems with XP I think I might reinstall it using the restore function Dell provide on a separate partition. This will get me back to the factory settings and then once I have it all updated I will then go about putting Ubuntu back on.

From what you said if it doesn't affect XP then I might consider installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as XP rather than have a separate hard drive for Ubuntu.

Thanks for your help.

Same here but we are migrating to a Win 7 based image at the moment which is causing no end of headaches as we have had to upgrade MS Office and Exchange as well.

Clean installing Ubuntu will probably be best, even though you can upgrade from one LTS edition to another, and 12.04 is the next one, and will be supported until 2017. The inbetween editions are now supported for only 18 months.

As to putting XP and Ubuntu on the same hard drive, there's no problem with that, but no great advantage either. Just make sure that you install Ubuntu to a different partition to XP or it will affect XP.

Ubuntu Grub is nowadays very good at finding the other OS's on your PC, so it should find XP even if it's on another drive.
That wasn't always the case when I started messing around with Linux in 2007, and I remember having to edit grub to include XP.
If you don't want grub though, get Ubuntu to install it to it's own partition/drive rather than the MBR.

Yeah we're sticking with 4.10, but only until the next openSUSE release (13.1), which I imagine will come with a newer KDE. Apparently the next openSUSE is to be an Evergreen release - a kind of LTS, featuring support for three years rather than the usual 18 months. This is frankly terrific news for both me and the missus as openSUSE has become somewhat a constant distro for us. I haven't removed it since installing, amazingly enough, and the missus absolutely loves it on her laptop.

I've been spending a bit of time with it recently on my desktop and it still purrs. No issues at all, and KDE is just so goddamn beautiful, it really is. People find it complex, but I prefer the term deep. I love having options available if I need them, and it makes other DE's feel a bit limited in many ways.

sorry about the delay. Yes I have looked in driver manager and according to that I am using FgirX-updates Version 2:9.012-0Ubuntu1.

Down the bottom it says 1 proprietary driver in use.

But when I play flash videos in the browser, chrome, the display gets corrupted before it starts playing.
