Only thing that concerns me about that is that if the user was running XP, then in all likelihood their PC could struggle with the new Unity based Ubuntu 12.04. Granted I don't think it's as heavy as many make out and it's getting better all the time, but on a low specced machine it would surely struggle. They originally offered Lubuntu but Canonical asked them to make it mainline Ubuntu.

Unity is horrid, that is why I went to Mint, the newer Gnome is awful as well.

Sorted out graphics card problem, not sure how, but booted up Mint this morning and all seems to work ok.

Not to your taste, you mean.
They all work fine, and are basically the same under the hood.
It's just the GUI that differs.

Certainly not to my taste or a lot of other people either from what I have read in the past, saying that i have heard it have improved.

I was in town today and there was a sign outside the church software Freedom day and said something about the Linux user group. (never knew we had one) so I went in and had a look. chatting to one bloke about Unity and he said it is only a UI and most people will just pop open their browser and that is it. Sadly he is right.

Do you not think I have not already seen this? It would not surprise me if there is not a back door, but then I would not be surprised if there is not one to most things that connect to the net these days.

I am surprised you are used an admittedly compromised OS. I would think there are 'back doors' into all the OS's but I don't worry about 'them' lol

So as not to be inflammatory, I thought it best to post this question in this thread. Plus, I imagine some of you will have some experience of it...

I have a retail boxed copy of Windows 7, which includes both the 32 and 64 bit installs. I currently have the 64 bit version installed. If I want to sell on the set, do I have to deactivate the install somehow, or is it enough to just format it and install another OS over it? Is there anything I need to know about selling on such a thing?

What is true we will not know, but I still trust linux more than MS or Apple for that matter.

You don't mind being spied on, you will give any info they ask for, well that what it seems like.

Anyway, now I know we have a linux user group here, I may have a bit of a nose around and go to their next meeting.

Maybe some one there will be able to help with a couple of small problems I have got,.

If its a retail version of 7 then just format the drive and sell it leaving you free to install 7 on a new machine.

I'm pretty sure once I've sold it I won't be able to install it on a new machine!

But still, I can just format the partition and sell it yeah? Will the new user have to contact Microsoft or anything to validate the key?

If I were you I'd deactivate the product key on your present machine first.

I think this would mean that the user would be less likely to be asked to do anything special to activate it. Although having said that, I'm not sure how Microsoft would know one way or the other? (I don't think it phones home?)

I used this method myself when I moved my retail copy of Windows 7 from one computer to another, so I know it works.
It's possible that just reformatting has the same effect? But deactivating wouldn't do any harm, at the very least. And it would be a plus point on your ebay listing (if it's ebay you will be selling on?).

Kinda realised today that I've had W7 since launch in 2009, and have hardly ever used it. Not that I don't like it or think it's anything less than awesome tbh. It's just that I like me Linux and I spend more time with that.

It would not surprise me to be honest. Linux have this nerdy thing about it. I can understand why Ubuntu may take out reference to it, hoping that maybe more people will think about using it. i am not saying I agree with it mind you.

i prefer mint, but I mucked up my system, by trying to install KDE desktop. now Mint freezes when I go into a menu, even using the default desktop.

Oh well, easy to reinstall.

Talking of which, I use Acronis to make a back up of my windows system, is there any thing that works with Linux partitions? i seen a couple , but they don't seem to recognise the newer ext4 file system

what would be good is something that will back up both NTFS and Linux files system in one go.

Gnome is too much like unity now. I did not like it when it went to version 3.

I still like it (and Unity too) very much. It's pretty nice, and I've always gotten along with it tbh. But these days I'm all about KDE now. I tend to gravitate to that more than any other, mostly because it's so complete and I miss having options when I use other DE's.

I've just discovered rygel on Ubuntu. It's a DLNA server. When it stream un-transcoded stuff, CPU load is very low.

I can now access any media file on my desktop PC using VLC as a DLNA client, on Linux and Win7 laptop.

I'm waiting for MrsKJ to stop watching TV so I can see if our living room PVR, which has a DLNA client, can see the Linux PC.
