I like KDE, been mucking around with it now I got it up and running, installed mint with KDE.

Only a temp set up, once i found out how to use clonezilla, I will redo the machine, both windows and linux.

What are people's experiences here with Arch Linux? Is it really so difficult to set up?

I really fancy having openSUSE 13.1 as my main OS with KDE when it arrives, but I would really like a Gnome 3.10 distro as my backup. Now ordinarily this would have been a Debian based Gnome 3 offering such as Ubuntu, but seeing as Ubuntu GNOME will no longer be offering the latest versions of Gnome I don't see the point of it. So I'm looking at Arch, but, you know, I also have work, a family, some films and TV shows to watch, some great games to play on my PS3, and also a tiny bit of a social life. Is there enough time to install Arch in the middle of this, or will I need a fortnight off work just to set up the network manager, and a holiday afterwards to get over it?

Let me know.

Then again there's this, which is Arch-based and running Gnome 3 as its main DE. I may have found a winner here!

Looks good, but it depends on a few things, I may have a look over the weekend, got lots of time.

Using mint with KDE at the moment and I can't keep the time set.
All is fine until I switch off and switch on again. It is now saying 05.57, but it is now 06.57.

It keeps going back by one hour, I even tried using the set clock automatically, but that tells me it can't connect.
i had a search and it seems to be a normal thing with KDE and i still can't find a way to stop it happening.

Its a GMT thing, confuses people and machines at times.

Actually you know, I'm not so sure it is this with KDE, as I've had this issue before on two different installs. I can't remember what I did to fix it, but if it comes to me I'll post it up. It was something stupid. I remember spending ages going into YasT and various modules in System Settings. I'm sure I ended up unticking the box for "set time automatically" in System Settings, then going into YasT and setting it there. Obviously Mint doesn't use YasT.

Hmmm, I'll have a think...

How are you setting the time now, noise747?

nothing to do with GMT, it is set at London, i know there is a UTC option, but i have unticked that.

I use the standard KDE time panel to set it. this is the only thing that is annoying me now that i got my sound sorted.

Dumb question, but if you go into System Settings, and then into Locale, are you set up for UK there? Sounds daft I know, but it was definitely something simple that sorted it for me. Like you, I remember spending ages pounding the various settings trying to sort it.

Gah!

Got it!

I think!

Right click on the time display on your panel. Go to "Digital Clock Settings", then "Appearance". Then uncheck the box that says "Show time zone". You should find, as long as the system is set correctly to the right time zone, that the proper time then shows on your display.

No? Let me know.

Its a well known bug with KDE, its been like that for years, they know about it, but havent fixed it.
On some versions of KDE it causes a crash when you try to change any time settings.

It must be easy fix, but the devs still havent sorted it

I used Elementary OS for a while after it came out and it is generally very good but there are a few annoying things.

The file manager is very limited and did not have a lot of the features I want.
I didn't like the dock and found that, too, quite limited.

There were a few other things but the long and short of it is, I went back to Xubuntu

I like Elementary OS. I'm trying it on one of my machines with a large 24" 1920x1200 monitor and it looks right at home.
I think the dock is simple and functional.

I do agree about the file manager though, I find it a bit flaky, and the breadcrumb trail often seems to get stuck (if you know what I mean?).
Also by default it has single click selection (like KDE) which I don't get on with.
Luckily if you install Elementary Tweak, among other things, it allows you to change it to double click

It definitely has promise but for now Xubuntu does everything I need it to and more. I will continue to follow the development closely, though.

I tried other ways, but have given up, also had some problems again with audio, it gets confused with the two sound cards i have got.

I am going to go back to Cinnamon which is a shame really as KDE had some nice features, but I think they spent more time on the pretty effects than other more important features.

I've found that I'm not bothering to use my netbook as often now - as Unity really wasn't as good as the UI on Ubuntu 10.04...

Thought I had it there. It is a KDE bug, but it can be put right. I just can't remember how.

Just been looking into old-time fan favourite PCLinuxOS. Haven't seen it for ages, and though it had finished as the lead guy Texstar (Bill Reynolds) was really ill the last time I looked into it. However it looks like he's still running it and it looks fantastic. Just burnt off a DVD of their last release to give it a go.

Depends on what the spec is. I find on my desktop that 13.04 is really good tbh. It's very fast, much faster than the last one. I wouldn't fancy running it on a netbook though, unless it had minimum 2Gb RAM and a fairly decent processor. It wouldn't run on my old Eee PC! But Unity I like very much on a desktop. It's fresh and new without being Windows 8 alike, and quite traditional in other ways too.

Oh well, thanks for trying.

I am shocked it is still going, I remember getting their mag years ago, they offered Mandriva Linux, those was the days when I tried so many and gave up as they was a pain to use.

How things have moved on.

PClinuxos is at no 6 on the page hit rankings of www.distrowatch.com (3 month view). It is still a very popular distro. I have the 'full monty' version included on one of my multiboot usb sticks.

To be honest after trying it I thought it was really lovely! Only problem, I couldn't find Handbrake and some of my favourite emulators (stuff like Snes9x-gtk and Nestopia, among others) in their repos. But even then it would still be worth installing, and I think I will when the next release comes around.

I think it's time to give up on Ubuntu/Unity considering with the upcoming release we will not be able to remove the adware known as the shopping scope. A real shame although I could see someone forking it

Yes I was reading about this today. Seems sad, and it's clear that most users, like me, have the thing disabled by default. Hence the move to make it non-negotiable.

I dunno, I think I've been through every emotion with the new direction for Ubuntu. On the one hand you think well OK, they ought to be able to make some dough from this thing, but on the other I don't like this way of doing it. Then I think well 13.04 is such a great OS, but on the other hand it isn't really doing anything you couldn't get elsewhere in one form or another. And round and round in circles I go. What will make the difference ultimately is if Ubuntu continues to defy everyone and be awesome, though I hear 13.10 is a bit rough.

I hear Mir is getting better too. I do think history will be kind to it. After all, there was very little momentum within Wayland to deliver anything until Canonical announced Mir. For that alone it will have been worth it. Sometimes these things need a purpose and a motivator. And an evil nemesis.

The thing is, I like Unity. I find it intuitive, progressive and easy on the eye. I just don't like the Amazon adware. If I wanted Amazon shopping results I would visit the Amazon website.

I think the Mir V Wayland debate is pretty irrelevant to normal computer users. That is one mainly for developers so I don't have an opinion on it

Disable scopes:

I use i3wm instead of Unity.
