I don't want it disabled, I want it uninstalled

I think I will stick with Mint,

I done a manual install yesterday of Mint, partitioned the drive to my own specs. I normally unplug the windows and file drive and let mint do a whole disk thing.

I am pretty pleased with myself. took me a bit of time to get there, but now I know how to do it. i even put in a home partition,

Never liked Unity, tried the newer version and still don't like it. I found that ubuntu was too much in Amazons bed, another reason I went to Mint.

I don't understand why people don't just change their desktop or window manager and stick with Ubuntu; at least this way the software updates are frequent and the servers can cope.

I currently use Xubuntu due to a few performance/stability issues that still remain in Unity but I had planned to go back. An inability to remove the adware has put a stop to that. Xfce FTW

I installed i3wm from Xubuntu.

I think Unity is like Marmite, I don't like Unity personally but I'm prepared to help make it more usable for those who like it.

I did see that. It's just a pity it can't be uninstalled. Doesn't really compute with the open philosophy but disabling is better than nothing.

What do you mean the servers can cope? So is the adware only in Unity on ubuntu?

I like Mint to be honest, certainly the cinnamon desktop, it is simple, but does the job. I think Unity was a bit of a over kill and I am not fond of the way it makes applications combine with it at the top of the screen.

The only problem with Mint is that unlike Ubuntu you can't just do a update, you got to reinstall, which is why I decided to put a home partition on, now I know you can. I am so glad I have a mate who uses Linux all the time. Just a shame he don't have the time to teach me more.

The likes of Xubuntu Kubuntu even Mint got a massive helping start by just taking Ubuntu and tweaking it a bit.
Just like lots of others they let Ubuntu do most of the ground work, then add there bits onto it.

Times are slowly changing with some, including Mint wanting to move to Debian releases.

Yes, unless I'm much mistaken ... certainly not on Xubuntu which is my starting point.

I was with openSUSE for 10 years, the only reason I changed to Ubuntu in 2010 was to work with other people who used it.

openSUSE has always been a decent distro, it's had its good and bad versions, but the community support is good.

Re Arch, it will be from what i remember easier to install than Suse13.1, why isnt networking enabled by default with Suse You only find out once its installed, and having never used Suse and you cant get online for help, youre stuck

Trying to get away from Gnome/Ubuntu/My Beloved Xfce. But struggling to find a KDE version that doesn't have faults/bugs.
Lets hope after some install headaches, Suse lives up to its reputation of being reliable. At least something as simple as setting the clock works unlike Kubuntu.

I like Cinnamon, while it looks a bit dull compared with KDE, it is pretty fast.

the one thing that does annoy me with Mint is the need to reinstall it when a new version comes out, not update like Ubuntu.

I would not mind if there was a easy way to reinstall all the software.

There is a network bug with openSUSE 12.3 that is widely known. You should just be able to reboot and it works, however straight after installing it does not. Regarding the rest of your post, hey maybe it's time to roll your own. If you do, post it up! I don't think anyone could honestly say that the Arch installer is easier than the openSUSE one though!


Yes it does look a bit less attractive than KDE, but then so did old Gnome 2. I still feel KDE is the Holy Grail of Linux desktops, though there is the odd bug. But on the whole it's the best imho. I'm toying with the idea of Mint again when the new one comes out. Clem always seems to be able to talk me into it with his announcements. The new Cinnamon looks really lovely.

Im ok with bugs and can get around them, but whenever im installing a OS i look at it from the point of a new user to Linux or that particular OS.
Things like network bugs/clock bugs/no flash etc should all be basic stuff a newbie shouldnt be experiencing by now.

It pains me to say it, but Ubuntu just works, so why cant the rest?

I was refering to the likes of chakra http://www.chakra-project.org/ etc, they are making Arch easy to use and install.

They do a rolling release, but its based on Debian testing, and can be buggy, but issues tend to be fixed quickly.

I tend to agree with you to be honest. When I say widely known, I mean they widely know about it. I think it's a shame they released it with such a show stopper, but it can be surmounted fairly easily. Bet they don't do it for the next release! But yeah Ubuntu is still pretty good from a new user POV.

I'm still eyeing up Antergos for my entry into the Arch world. I've used Chakra before and it really does make KDE even more amazing, but it's not very friendly and arguably not very Arch-y either. Antergos seems to be aiming to do for Arch what Ubuntu did for Debian; chiefly just make it much easier to install and use for norms. I'm definitely gonna give it a punt on their next release.

Blimey, could Ubuntu development on the desktop be fundamentally over? I was just listening to the Linux Unplugged podcast where they were discussing this post from Sebastian Bacher on the Ubuntu mailing list. Have to admit I hadn't seen this and I find it a bit alarming. Talking about sticking to older versions on Gnome in order to maintain stability is a misdirection to me. They seem to be basically saying, "Guys, we're done on the desktop, we have nothing more to do, and we're moving pretty much all focus over to mobile".

At a time when Windows 8 has failed desktop users and people could be looking for alternatives, at a time when Steam has now arrived wholeheartedly on the Linux scene, it seems a massive fail to abandon the desktop altogether. This crazy idea that desktops are dead. WTF is up with these people?

Sod it, I'm off to Mint next time.

I prefer Gnome 2 than the newer versions, I don't like this thing that Gnome 3 and unity does trying to make the applications part of the OS.

I suppose in some ways I think the simpler and plainer the desktop is it will take less resources, but I do like a bit of bling, which is why I prefer windows 7 to windows 8 desktop wise, with or without a start menu.

i been through a lot of linux distros and never stuck with Linux for any amount of time because it was always a pain to use, but over the last couple of years, things have got better. My laptop have had mint on now for over a year and i am starting to use Mint more on my desktop.
i am thinking of putting Mint on my other machine and using that for everyday stuff and leaving Windows on this machine just for video editing. at the moment it have been fine because I have not done a lot of editing over the last couple of weeks.

I thought Ubuntu was Debian or based on ti anyway? so that means Mint is based on it as well.

i have downloaded it thinks, I will stick it on a USB stick and have a look.
