So does no one care the new Ubuntu was released the other day?

Reviews so far are pretty good. The Linux geeks aren't too impressed, saying there aren't many new features. But I think like 13.04 before it, a lot of improvements have been made under the hood. Everyone seems to be saying it's faster still, and even more solid. I think that's a good thing for desktop users.

I do worry though that Ubuntu is losing interest quickly in the desktop, and my own personal theory is that 14.04 may be their final desktop release. This sounds a bit silly maybe, but a lot of the rumblings coming out of Canonical seem to suggest to me they will pull the plug on it soon. Hopefully by then Mint will be safe from the fallout.

Or maybe I just drink too much?

I now got Mint Debian edition installed and I like it, even if it did take ages to update, too long to be honest, are they trying to like Microsoft?

But it is working fine here, I can't wait for the next main update.

As for Ubuntu i downloaded the new version this morning and got it on a stick, using it now to be honest, but this unity thing still nags me to be honest.

i will have a more intense look later on, but I think I will be be staying with Mint.

I also think that Ubuntu will drop the desktop at some point, i think Mint debian will be ready, in fact it is ready now, but they do need to sort some things out like their software manager.

Well maybe you should worry, if not for yourself, but for other people, that use one of the 7 main releases (and several smaller ones) that rely on Ubuntu.

The load of updates, are because you are using the rolling debian release, the Mint team need to update the install disk more offten.

Just found this in the Mint site.

Will LMDE get new ISO images with Update Pack 7?

LMDE ISOs will be updated with Update Pack 8 after the Mint 16 release to feature MATE 1.8, Cinnamon 2.0 and all the improvements planned for the upcoming version of Linux Mint.

This is what I've been keeping my eye on. I think Ubuntu will eventually make it difficult for variants to exist, and to be honest I think that was always the idea. I think like you that Mint may be ready to switch to Debian if needed. Clem has already spoken of potentially switching to another base. I hope this doesn't happen, but you can see it can't you?

I've been playing with Ubuntu 13.10 and as much as I want to love Ubuntu, I just can't appreciate it as much as I do Mint. Just wish you didn't have to do a clean install each time Mint release a new version, thankfully I have a partitioned drive with my data on.

I see they've decided not to put XMir in 13.10, but to introduce it along with Unity 8 in 14.04 or 14.10.
I think Unity 8 is supposed to be the one that works on a phone, tablet or desktop, so I guess the desktop OS as a separate entity will effectively disappear then?

Updated to 13.10 on my main Ubuntu machine this afternoon. Took about 40 mins including the download.
Very few changes, apart from changes to the search filters in Dash.
It left my desktop looking exactly the same as 13.04, so I didn't have to do anything to it.
Probably the least eventful Ubuntu upgrade yet?

I've got Kubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome on another machine, but I haven't looked at those yet to see if they want to upgrade.

I realise that, it is a good job I have no data restrictions on my broadband.

I seen that as well, I am looking froward to that. i just stuck Mint Debian edition onto my laptop now as well, it seems to be less resource hungry than Ubuntu based mint and since the laptop is pretty old now, it may work better.

Been playing with the new ubuntu on a usb stick, but still don't like it. Yes I found out how to partition so my home section can have it's own partition. it is great now that i learnt how to partition a linux drive, makes it so much easier to install Linux.

I bricked my Xubuntu installation at the weekend and had to reinstall so I went with 13.10. It is solid as always, few new features to speak of but overall a solid, stable release. They did change the login screen to LDM which was overdue. One slight issue I experienced was the sound menu not working but a quick Internet search sorted that

On the downside, Clementine (my iPod manager of choice) is now useless to me as the latest version removed iDevice support because libgpod isn't being updated to support them

I've now updated my Kubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome partitions to 13.10.

The only one that's been problematic is Gnome.
Some of the shell extensions seem to work on one boot up, and not the next (weather, activities, places).
My conky refused to show up at first, and then randomly started working again.
Also the sound settings seem to default to HDMI sound on every boot up, even though I select analog-stereo.

I have never got one to work with zero issues

They released it with that bug, not what we expect from the Xfce desktop.

Its been logged for a while and was a low priority bug, but even after getting upgraded to High priority as release day came and went, its still not fixed
Lets hope its not a sign of slacking from them

Apparently, if they fixed it in Xubuntu, it would have broken it in Unity and the workaround isn't the prettiest in Xfce never mind Unity.

Has anyone experienced an issue where their file system goes read only for no apparent reason?

I have looked online for a fix but nothing has worked and I have had to clean install twice in a week

Sorry im no help to sort that issue. But i blame those guys at Canonical

Xfce is renound for being tested and stable.
But the last relese of Xubuntu seems buggy

From youre issues to sound issues etc.
Seems more reasons are popping up for people to leave Canonical based OS
Kubuntu Xubuntu etc etc...

Try the Mint Xfce, its Debian based.

Will soon be my OS of choice, as also giving up with KDE.

Got to like it, until i wanted to format a usb pen drive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeJQmmKYwJY
Also why cant you just delete stuff, i dont want it in the recycle bin
Plus sound defaults back to default setting on reboots eetc etc etc.

So its back to Xfce, but even thats got issues now, so Canonical free Mint is going on tomorrow.
Debian based should play better than Canonical based with my hardware.

PS yes i know Ubuntu is Debian based, but i know what i mean, not reliant on Ubuntu devs as they go off into the future plans to be independent and dump everyone else

Yeah, I have noticed a few bugs in the latest Xubuntu which is surprising considering it has always been stable.

The problem with LMDE is that you don't get access to the Ubuntu repositories

Well if its Ubuntu you want to stick with.
Then due to me not getting much sleep for last few days, and probably for a few days more. My broadband has been on what seems like constant download.
And its actualy been stable for a few weeks

Its youre luck day, and maybe mine, even though i was looking to move away from Ubuntu.

Found
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=voyager
Its been floating around under the radar for a few years.

OMG does the setup look

Its french based so you will have to ask google to translate the page, only takes a few seconds, unless you speak french.

Fast forward this to 44mins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-ckuks2A08

http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...be.qzV70XTOdXw

Ive not had much time yet to hammer it and see if it lives up to hype, but ive got lots of free time for next few days
im feeling already.

Its based on Ubuntu 13.04 And 4.10 Xfce. It asks if you want to upgrade to 13.10 when youve installed it.
I said no as prefer a clean install, so will wait see if they release a voyager 13.10.

Sound works as well and icons on task bar

Top left on top task bar, icon marked ..Slingshot.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOlgOU7dJ7g
Also its got proper Xfce menu, not whisper on, but you could install that if its youre taste.
