Linux Mint 17 RC1 is going up on the mirrors now.

It's also been confirmed that Mint will be using Ubuntu LTS as the base for future releases instead of the 6-monthly Ubuntu releases.
So excited! This is going to be my main OS for some years now.

I don't blame them not following the Ubuntu release pattern in many ways. Why not just iterate on top of the LTS for 5 years? New stuff usually gets backported anyway. Lets see how it plays out. They might end up going the Debian route eventually anyway.

Thanks for the heads up, Esot!

It'd be my main OS if they sorted out the AMD driver problem lol.

Grabbing it now. Last time out I installed the RC and it was fine all the way through. Cross fingers this one is the same.

I do find it amusing that latte-sipping beret wearing hipsters with their Macbook Airs are carrying around a machine that ships not only with vim but also with ed, a slightly modernised (it has a prompt, even!) version of the line editor which Ken Thompson wrote in 1971, which in turn was heavily inspired by qed, written by Butler Lampson and Peter Deutsch in the mid 1960s. Between the three of them they pretty much defined computing as we know it today, and it's worth doing simple edits with ed just to pay homage to that legacy. At a guess, it's the piece of software on a Mac with the oldest unbroken lineage.
Ah, but how many of those Starbucks-drinking, Windows-hating Mac users know about that?

Maybe just hope from me but if Imagination could take hold of/own a Linux project in the way Google has, then Mips could herald a new Linux dawn in the desktop arena.

Finals officially announced on the Mint Blog. If you're running the RC, just a simple update from the Update Manager will be enough to bring you in.

See Mint have stuck with Ubuntu base.
Thought they were going to commit to Debian rolling release.

Or do they not want to do the hard work with the up coming Mir Versus Wayland that's taking place this year?

They never said that. They are sticking to the LTS releases for the Ubuntu based Mint versions. Don't see what being based on either Debian or Ubuntu has to do with adopting Mir or Wayland at this stage in the game. As long as they don't start developing their own display server instead I'm fine with it. I imagine they'll just wait and see which works best or has seen the bigger user adoption, and jump in then. Makes sense, because the truth is there's little of either display server available right now to make it worth committing anything to just yet.

I normally jump right in with new versions of Mint, and I have been happy with Mint 16 since it's release. Would people say stick with 16 or is 17 a major improvement?

Mint 17 isn't a major improvement, but i'd say it's an improvement on 16. Besides 16 only has another 2 months of support.

Then upgrade I shall. By far my favourite OS in work or at home, I can't recommend it enough to anyone after a complete OS that is a sturdy work-horse and always reliable.

I think I may go back to mint, been using Manjaro for a while, it is ok, but i think I prefer mint.

so i will start downloading the new mint and go and do some tidying up while that is happening.

Xfce has never been a priority with Mint.
But you can follow this thread for updates.

Latest Linux Action Show has a brief bit on Mint 17, along with an interview with one of the developers of CoreOS (and their "runs Linux" is an awesome-looking robot).

My personal website is run in a FreeBSD jail on my FreeNAS box, so i can certainly see the advantages in CoreOS's philosophy of running everything in its own jail-like environment with a very minimal host system. I really think the CoreOS way is the wave of the future for servers, and maybe for desktops too.

youll be pleased to know, Xfce is still in dev
http://git.xfce.org/
But that theres still no release date for Xfce 4.12
Its like only over a year behind its original release date
https://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.12/roadmap

you can force the latest if you want live dangerously
https://launchp*******/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/xfce-4.12

They need to watch out, and get there act together.
As the likes of LXQt is gathering pace.

Why not have a look at the current long term support release of Xubuntu which uses the XFCE desktop? http://xubuntu.org/ https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=xu...w=1280&bih=867 (the start panel can easily be moved to the bottom left http://tinypic.com/r/v8hkhv/8 - that's from tonight a few mins ago)

The assorted desktop environment developers do appear to go through long periods of silence followed by a brief period of high activity when the next release is issued.

Is it as Lite as Puppy? What are the min specs.

(I wish Distrowatch was a readable website.....)

Oh dear... just tried to update Linux Mint 16 to 17 and it crashes (input output error) during installation.

This is the procedure I followed (HP laptop using up to date Windows 7)
- Downloaded LM 17 iso and used Univeral USB Installer (pendrivelinux) to create an installation USB drive. This ran and completed without errors, I then used the Windows Explorer "eject" option before disconnecting from the laptop. If the pen drive is faulty, would the installer not have detected this?

This is the same procedure I used to install LM16 which worked perfectly.

I then booted the target machine (Asus eee PC1000H) from the pen drive and selected the option to replace the previous LM16 installation. I then connected to the my wireless network, set the time zone option and started the installation. It then ran for a few minutes (displaying a features guide) before crashing.

The Asus machine originally ran XP before LM16.

The installer hinted at a faulty CD/DVD which does not make sense as I am not using either of those. So I am now wondering what I did wrong...

Has anyone else encountered this? Thanks...

They are relatively modest, e.g. 700 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM & 5 GB of hard disk install space https://www.linuxliteos.com/download.html. I don't like Puppy as it's too flaky and idiosyncratic but Linux LIte seems relatvely conventional. I certainly wouldn't recommend Puppy (I've used it) to someone coming over from Windows.
