Has anyone tried Deepin 2014?

I am using it at the moment and it is really very good. Stable and fast (on my laptop) and the Deepin software is also very good especially the software centre. Well worth a look.

Nevertheless, that video, like this one here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_nBBoekkdI, illustrates that Linux developers are perfectly capable of producing elegant, efficient and productive user interfaces that are just as good as anything that Apple or Microsoft produce.

Not tried it but, like Elementary and the now defunct Pear (just who killed that one off and why?), there's a distinct Mac OS look about it. Interestingly, it also offers the Kingsoft Office Suite as standard in addition to Libre Office.

I hope that this distribution continues to develop and grow because China really needs an effective OS that can replace the increasingly vulnerable XP on all those millions of computers over there.

Just been watching these videos about the new KDE Plasma 5 release coming soon. Looking very nice so far, but surprised to see 1) just how little has changed in real terms and 2) blimey, it really looks like Cinnamon. Watch the Visual Feature Guide and you'll really get the idea.

Of course, I'll be using it as soon as it becomes available in Kubuntu.

It is fresh and logical (unlike the Win 8 kludge) and I like the unified style approach that KDE adopts (l watched both videos and the music in the longer video is Ambiose by Zeropage). The unsung hero in all of this is Blue Systems who have been supporting KDE, Kubuntu and Netrunner and they deserve a commendation for doing that because that assures that all three projects have a future.

These days, Libre Office seems to be the de facto standard office suite for Linux distributions. However, l think that there are better, free alternatives out there such as FreeOffice* for Linux: http://www.freeoffice.com/en/download

*Paid-for version also available: http://www.softmaker.com/english/of_en.htm http://shop.softmaker.com/shop/shop.php?go

While I appreciate and am glad that there are these alternatives available, I personally have never had any serious problems with Libre Office, and I think it's a massively important piece of software in a larger sense. I would encourage folks to use that first, and perhaps even donate to keep things improving.

However, before I get flamed, I also appreciate it just won't be for everyone. Just my personal feelings.

That's fine but I wish there was greater choice in the Ubuntu Software Center, for example, and I did make that point to Softmaker. By the way, I hope I've fully answered your Linux question : http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...8&postcount=54

Hmm. I not sure I'd be as buoyed by those stats as you. If you look at a longer time frame Linux's marketshare (as reported by this specific company, which has pros and cons like any other) is largely the same. It's been hovering around the 1.4-1.6% share (give or take a few ops) since 2012. Linux share always seems to rise a little, then fall back a little, then rise again, then fall again. It never seems to show a sustained momentum.

Depending on which analytics company you read Linux market share is either perpetually around 1.5% or just over 2%. Either way, paying too much attention to share is archaic in an era of multi-screen, multi-OS usage. You don't have to be the commanding leader to be the best, nor be profitable (though, sadly for Ubuntu's makers Canonical that still eludes them 10 years in to this game). Marketshare is rarely indicative of quality, just status quo.

Mozilla revealed some interesting stats recently. Of their 450m users 3% are on Linux. That would make 13.5m Linux users worldwide. Of course, not everyone uses Firefox on Linux. Using stats on OS:browser share, which puts FF on around 52% vs other browsers, would result in there being approximately 27m Linux users worldwide.

Sounds more impressive than "just 1%". Interestingly, when you tally this figure with the various reported OS figures, it comes out at around 1.4-1.6% of all OS users worldwide.

Neat.

Had a little play with linux mint 17 yesterday good news the AMD issue seems to be fixed i was getting sound via hdmi and good quality picture too, also it allowed me to use dual monitors.
Bad news - plex will not see my media files on linux at all and sadly linux will not install alongside windows. It isn't seeing the windows 7 operating system. I've tried everything from leaving a partition unallocated to formatting it to fat32 with no avail.
One option i'm thinking is to install linux first then reinstall windows afterwards but i've read this is not a wise idea.

Will have a play with it sometime.

That runs fine on Linux

Bingo that's the one i was looking for but couldn't remember the name of it lol, it worked perfectly on Mint 15 so should work great on mint 17 too, it streamed perfectly to my ps3.
I don't think there is a ROKU or Appletv app yet though.

Drats oh well it'll still stream to my ps3 so not really a issue, i'm still learning linux and yesterday was a huge learning curve for me.
Luckily unlike windows linux lets you use the os without installing it which allows you to browse the internet for solutions before jumping in lol.

I would say that having likely brought 1800 Microsoft employees to Munich, Limux has been a major success.

Meanwhile, in the cleaner real world, Woolworths Limited Australia are rolling out 8000 Linux based Chrome OS devices.

Whilst it's saved the city of Munich millions in terms of software licencing fees, there are still some unhappy employees and a review is going to take place (see Von Microsoft zu Linux und zurück - From Microsoft to Linux and back again - http://www.sueddeutsche.de/muenchen/...ueck-1.2090611). Their concerns relate to, amongst other things, a lack of an integrated contact, calendar and email application but even if there isn't an existing piece of software to do that, it's something that perhaps the developers at Ubuntu and/or Blue Systems could have a look at. It would be a shame if Munich reverted back to proprietary software.

There's plenty of anecdotal evidence about businesses changing to Linux because of cost issues (see http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=1994) plus there are a number of school board districts in the USA changing over too to Edubuntu, Uberstudent, etc. Indeed, in Norway, Skolelinux is in over 300 schools so l'm confident the knowledge and use of Linux distributions will increase over time.

Alpha released...

http://tanglu.org/en/

Looks intresting, seems its not just about yet another distro to choose from.

http://planet.tanglu.org/
quote from link..
This is no attempt to make tools like pip obsolete, but an attempt to have the different tools installing software on your machine communicate better, instead of creating parallel worlds in terms of software management. Another nice sideeffect of more metadata will be options to search for tools handling mimetypes in the software repos (in case you can’t open a file), smart software centers installing missing firmware, and automatic suggestions for developers which software they need to install in order to build a specific software package. Also, the data allows us to match software across distributions, for that, I will have some news soon (not sure how soon though, as I am currently in thesis-writing-mode, and therefore have not that much spare time). Since the goal is to have these features available on all distributions supporting AppStream, it will take longer to realize – but we are on a good way.... end

is this finally the very thin end of a hope to have some sort of core that others can include.
The choice of Linux OSes and how they work things is often a pain, and confusing to people.
Linux desktop defo needs devs to come together and get a standard base, but love or hate them Canonical seem to be set on there own path.
Be it The Latest Mir vs. Wayland Argument or something else.
