Some nice new functions in the latest Mate.
https://ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-vivid-beta1/
The Mate Tweak ctr is has been great addition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxFMtOl_DyQ

The default look of Mate, was a bit basic looking for me. But now have Plank on left, like Unity, min/max/close icons on right, i can easily delete bookmarks, just right click, have Whisker menu as default, Compiz effects enabled.
So now as well as Mate being fast, reliable, stable, its easy to use and easy to customise,
Roll on April 23rd for offical release

Only thing that lets it down now is the horrible colour scheme choice.

I'm currently giving mint 17.1 a try and yes yes yes! finally i'm getting sound via hdmi with my amd 4250 intergrated graphics, however my only issue is they still aren't fully supporting that chipset as on dual screen it's fine but if i was to switch it to just my tv then i lose the bottom bar.
Not a biggy i'm just happy they've finally sorted out the hdmi issue it's getting very close to me saying bye bye to windows for good.

Not strictly Linux, but I managed to install Haiku OS onto our now ancient and mostly unusable Eee PC 701. Very nice too. It's extremely fast, so the old Eee feels like lightning, but sadly the nature of websites these days proves too much for the old dear and apart from a handful of sites they don't even load up. It uses a browser called WebPositive, which I am led to believe is HTML5 compliant and being improved all the time, so I'll keep trying it.

Ideally I'd like to find something that just boots to a browser and that's it. There's simply no need for a lot of the other gubbins that comes with a distribution on the Eee. There's Tiny Core I suppose. I might look at that, since you can tailor it this way.

Meh, I'm off work today. I'm allowed to indulge in pointless pursuits like the Eee.

On a $150 Chromebook running Ubuntu 14.04, the Rockchip ARM SOC beats a Haswell Celeron Haswell SOC.

Just spent a very enjoyable half hour playing with the latest Antergos Linux release. Very, very nice indeed. I tried this out a while ago, and while I liked the idea of a rolling release Gnome based distro, I had a lot of trouble trying to get it to just play off the Live USB. This time, no issues at all. In fact I think I'm going to be installing it soon. They've made a number of small usability customisations to Gnome, which ordinarily I would not be too interested in but here they've integrated them really nicely and they work well with the absolutely gorgeous Numix theme they've chosen. Things like Dash to Dock really flesh out the look of the distro.

Yup, I'm convinced. I'll install it soon and post up my findings if anyone's interested.

Meh, disaster. Couldn't install the thing. Numerous errors. First it complained it couldn't format the partition I was pointing it at but never said why, then it complained about not being able to download some packages and then the installer prompted me to close it. Tried it numerous times with different approaches, but no dice as they say. Cr.Ap.

I tried it last week, didnt have any problems with it, just dont like arch based distros.
Was after trying Gnome 3.16 and apart from them and manjaro, nobody else did it. Even fedora seem to be waiting. Yes i could force a upgrade to gnome 3.16, but i've always found that forced upgrades to be unstable.

Do wish Gnome devs and marketing would bring there release cycle it no line with distro releases.
Think they are missing out on making people wait.

I used to use Elementary OS (for a couple of years) but for some reason became bored with it, I do not like the new release either.

Looking for a new candidate, and I have tried many, many varieties, the only one that fits my needs is ChaletOS, it is simply brilliant imo.

Stable, smooth and good looking!! (like me )

Try it, you can only be surprised.

So I tried searching for ChlaetOS...

It's ChaletOS!

Got to say, it looks really fantastic. Downloading now. As for Ubuntu, it's out now according to Distrowatch.

I had a look at a video of it and it looks pretty good to be honest.

I may stick it on the laptop.

Sorry just going to have a moan

This type of post gets me wound up recently.
Why do people think of Linux as just something to revive a old PC
its moved on, it supports ssd drives, it can handle UEFI, dual boot, secure boot, encryption, run some great games, its a modern OS
People can't expect it to keep supporting old hardware that other hardware and software companies don't support any more.

So chances are you will try it again and it will fail, if you've had trouble with support for you're old hardware in the past, chances are latest kernel still wont support it, so you will go away calling Linux rubbish

If Linux can bring a old machine back into use is that not a good thing? I use Linux on a old Laptop, I also use it on my desktop,, which is pretty poky.
The problem with Linux is the lack of software or if there is software some of it is naff, with just odd ok one.
I would use Linux a lot more if I had the software I needed.

I do not find this, there seems to be great software all over the net for linux and there are forums dedicated to almost all distros (or their base distro) where you can get advice.

There is also a dedicated Linux magazine called Linux User which is a good source for info, programs and tips.

I use Linux full time and have all the software I need, if and when I require something more specialist, I find it.
Even windows does not have all the software people need out of the box, they have to search it out also in the same way.

Its does take a leap of faith, people are comfortable with windows after the many years they had dominated the market along with Mac. Things have changed greatly and Linux gives the user greater control over what is and what is not on their computers, how it looks and it is freely available.

The more you use it, the less you rely on window etc.

Yep its great if Linux can bring a old PC back to life, i am not going postal over it.
Point was, some people see Linux only as something that is to be used to bring a old Pc back to life, on old hardware that even Linux probably doesn't support any more.
So they have a awful time using Linux and go away slagging it off

I havent any problems regarding software, my Linux does all the day to day stuff most people use there PCs for, re music, films, office stuff, internet, cloud etc etc
