Another big hands up for Mate
![]() https://ubuntu-mate.org/ It doesn't have to look bland compared to Cinnamon. With only a few clicks of the mouse it can look great. You can use the Numix theme and others https://www.maketecheasier.com/9-gre...-themes-linux/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeCC948tQ-U My spear drive testing Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (1.12) http://mate-desktop.com/blog/2015-11...1-12-released/ http://postimg.org/image/auxdlzv3z/ I just find it a perfect Desktop to very easily set up as i want, it's light and fast, you can easily add Compiz effects, you can bling it up or dumb it down, its great for new commers or advanced etc etc ![]() ![]() Nothing against Mint, just not my thing, have loaded latest mint onto spare drive to see if i am missing anything, but don't think i am. "All I can say is that I have installed Linux Mint Mate version on about 5 laptops and 3 PCs for friends and co-workers. The biggest complaint on their Windows systems was that the malware was making opening up any applications a nightmare. I installed Linux Mint, but also spiced it up a bit by adding the Variety Wallpaper changer, and Cairo Dock on the bottom. Everyone just loves the distro because it is familiar, easy to use, and rock solid. Best of all no more viruses, of course this is probably true for any distro. I did try one distro that was developed by one guy. It looked really beautiful, but after less than a month it became very unstable, so I removed it and went back to Linux Mint Mate edition." That gives it an OS X look but without the issues: Cybercriminals will target Apple in 2016, say experts Meanwhile, an alternative universe has just become this universe :Microsoft has announced a partnership with Red Hat to support Red Hat Linux in the Azure cloud. "While today’s news does not mark our first collaboration with Microsoft, it is by far our deepest," says Red Hat's Paul Cormier, Products and Technologies president. Microsoft offers Linux certification. Do not adjust your set. This is not an error When 'they' say the cloud changes everything, 'they' might be right. ^^^ That would never have happened under Balmer or Gates but I doubt that even the more enlightened Satya Nadella would ever sanction the development of an approved Microsoft distribution of Linux for the desktop. |

Mate Official Side Panel Still On
You can place it on the side now if you want, but its buggy as hell.
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/157 You can use third party ones, eg plank etc. But it looks like its going to finally get sorted for next Mate release ![]() http://wiki.mate-desktop.com/roadmap http://wiki.mate-desktop.com/status:gtk3 |

Decided to install Xubuntu 15.10 onto the old Dell laptop yesterday. Still not given it to my dad, as I have to bloody dissect the thing and fix the battery not charging. Grrr!
Anyway, when did XFCE get so bloody good, and why did no-one tell me? I am absolutely blown away, not only by how fast and functional it is, but also by how beautiful it is out of the box. No tweaking at all. And the more I'm delving in to what you can do with it, the more impressed I am. You can stick Compiz on the top if you want! The last time I used Xubuntu it felt a little...retro. A lot of the stuff I was used to in mainline Ubuntu was removed and replaced with other stuff that didn't work as well or look as good. It felt like it was for "old" PC's rather than modern machines. Now though, very different. I can seriously see me switching to this long term. |

Another year gone
As its yet the end of another year ![]() Just been having a look back at what the gossip was 4yrs ago when Scooby1970 started the thread. http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1482956 Seems not much has changed. Looks like Gnome 3 and Unity were starting to make a appearance, everyone hatted them, now we love them ![]() My first post i said i loved E17 Sabayon ![]() Seems like we were all distro hopping ![]() But think we are all guilty of that still (but not on the past level)Thankfully the install process for the vast majority of Distros is pretty much automated, just click next next, but still with the option to do it your own way. The list from 2011 http://distrowatch.com/index.php?dataspan=2011 Doesn't look much different from todays list. This nearly caused a riot in 2012 ![]() http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/09/o...n-ubuntu-12-10 2013 Somebody got told off for mentioning Win8 ![]() Quote:
Well there's always Windows 8.
Oh. Brought Wayland or Mir into discussions. No idea what the next 4-5yrs will look like, but can't see any world shattering announcements hitting the headlines? Suppose much of it will be in the hands of Nvidia/ATI and http://www.ubuntu.com/ Hope the likes of Mint manage to live on. http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mint Even if its not my first go to distro. |

I was amazed to see that the LTS version runs from a Live DVD with no problems and even uses the dreaded Nouveau driver (although the latest version crashes just like all the others I've tried) . I may actually switch unless someone finds a way to get Mint out of fallback mode and actually load Cinammon correctly |

And the best distro of 2015
Of course its only the opinion of this site.
2015 http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/b...stro-2015.html Compared to what they thought last year 2014 http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/b...stro-2014.html |

Xubuntu was really lovely but I ended up with a desktop breakdown after enabling the compositor "Compton". Was going great but on a reboot it all went pear shaped, and the desktop completely hung. It wouldn't even recognise my password on a second attempt at logging in, despite managing to shut down cleanly. We'll see what this Solus OS is like then. I mean OK, I'm not really distro-hopping, but I am yet to find something that could topple Mint as my main OS. Which is a smidge disappointing really. |

Nah, that didn't work. Used the Mint USB creator to make a bootable SolusOS stick, which started to boot but then failed. I tried twice - the first time the PC just rebooted itself after the Solus Grubs screen, then the second time I got a bunch of errors about Dracut or something.
To be honest I'm really considering not having a second OS at all. I only ever use the one anyway which I know works (Mint). Trying to use a second one is more bother than it's worth sometimes. |

Why not try Dedoimedo's recommendation of Xubuntu 15.04. I use it myself and it works very well on a laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad X200)
For my desktop I use Linux Mint 17.3 cinnamon edition. |

Code:
compton -b ![]() I now have the thing properly set up and working really well. I'll post up a pick shortly, but I find it very easy to use and extremely fast despite earlier setbacks. Gonna spend a bit more time with it and see how it fares long term. Xfce has sure come on a long way. ![]() EDIT: Pic for ya. Nice eh? |

Good call, but I decided to give it another go. I think I know where I went wrong - I attempted to add the Compton compositing desktop so videos etc wouldn't tear. I had found a tutorial and followed it, but I think it fell on the last step. It recommended adding the command

Not enough free disk space.
just get it sorted ![]() There's chuffin loads of space ![]() Just tried updating, it wont. .........The upgrade needs a total of 94.2 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please free at least an additional 8,844 k of disk space on '/boot'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'........... This is because my /boot partition has caught up with unwanted old kernels, packages etc. Well if they are unwanted, delete the bloody things ![]() Started getting the old bug error message when doing routine recommended Ubuntu base/security updates. Its a know bug from ages ago, its not auto deleting the old stuff. goes back to 2009 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1193733 I can sort it by doing it manually but i shouldn't have to its 2016 come on Linux get you're act together we shouldn't be having issues like this any more. How do you expect any one new to it be messing with basic cock ups like that ![]() rant over ![]() or not. its like Kali_EI post above, he shouldn't be having those issues on a major distro like Xubuntu ![]()

...a MASSIVE rant!
As for Xubuntu, I sort of agree but then if you run something like XFCE then I guess it is always going to be a bit more "manual". However, yes I do agree that by now, this sort of thing should/could be sorted by default.

. And I know you'll hate me for it but this is again another area Mint is better. They aren't expecting you to constantly update it, so it never becomes an issue..
![]() Well will give Mint Mate another try. But just downloading Debian Mate and Arch Mate, will have a play with them. Thought i may as well just cut the middle man out (Ubuntu). Seems Debian Mate is ok and is updated to latest 1.12.1 Debian looks a bit bland, but you would expect that of Debian. Bit of tweaking soon sorts that out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pEhucq3-Rc Arch has its pros and cons. But again can theme and do everything my Ubuntu Mate does (or not sometimes ![]() )https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_hU7rEsl4Q So why im sticking with a derivative of Ubuntu?Maybe they should get the people working on Ubuntu phone and get them back helping out on the desktop issues

I tried Solus OS 1.0 on a live USB and it definitely has potential. Still a bit immature to make it my main OS but it's one to keep an eye on this year.
Currently on Xubuntu 15.10 (shocker )
