Thought this would be a useful way to start the new season's thread, by providing links back to those that covered radio football coverage in previous years:

A few confirmed departures from talkSPORT to report. Not strictly from their commentary and reporting team but of interest nonetheless.
Antony D'Angelo has left the talkSPORT production team to freelance with BBC Radio Sport from Monday onwards. Ant started on talkSPORT as a South-East based football reporter in the 2004/05, eventually switching from domestic games to doing off-tube updates on Channel Five's live Serie A games during the 2007/08 season. By which point he had began to concentrate on his behind-the-scenes role, working on shows including Hawksbee & Jacobs and Drive Time. He was also one of talkSPORT's live match producers at the 2010 World Cup. It will be interesting to see if he returns to an on-air role as a sports newsreader or reporter on BBC Radio. Faye Carruthers, who read the news bulletins during The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast and Keys & Gray shows, also left the station on Friday to return to freelancing. She had been reading weekday morning news bulletins on talkSPORT since 2007. Although Faye's role was a news one, as seems to be a prerequisite on talkSPORT she is a football fan (Luton Town supporter) so we might hear her in sports-based roles in the future. Indeed her first freelance work will be for Sky and the BBC. Good luck to them both. |

On this thread, it is reported that Real Radio Northeast will not be providing commentary on Newcastle United and Sunderland.
I can't see Chris Cooper remaining at the station. I wonder where he will go? |

As far as I know, there aren't any significant changes in the North West that have been announced yet.

But in terms of football commentary/reporting work at weekends, you'd presume he'd want to keep his hand in somewhere. Possible options could include: -

Doing something for Sky Sports TV: maybe reporting on Gillette Soccer Saturday or even commentating on Football First or Spanish games. He's commentated for TV before for a number of ITV's regions in the early to mid 2000s, so he's no stranger to TV work.
Perform's Watch&Bet service: Lots of radio commentators and reporters seem to be doing bits for them at the moment, it's a good way of doing something for a national/international audience and building up your CV.
A return to talkSPORT: Cooper seems to still be based in Yorkshire, and seeing as talkSPORT haven't really had a specific Yorkshire correspondent since Tim White stopped reporting a few years ago (North-East guys Graham Courtney and John Temple tend to cover games from this area for them), he'd be able to fill a gap in their network of football reporters. He's popped up on there as a reporter once every blue moon since leaving the station.
Are there any other commercial local radio stations after a new commentator? If, for example, Signal Radio picked up commentary rights to Stoke City matches (as many of their sister UTV Radio stations have done with their local clubs in recent times), if available Cooper would seem a good fit there.
Continuing with Real Radio Northeast: If they are still going to be doing reports on Newcastle and Sunderland, he might opt to remain doing these, perhaps in the hope that they'll change their mind and return to commentaries at some point down the line.
|

Portsmouth community station Express FM actually carries the BBC Radio Solent Portsmouth FC commentaries.
Commercial radio pulled out when Celador Radio bought The Quay and rebranded it to The Breeze. Celador do not broadcast football on any of their other stations so commentaries on the new Jack FM station are unlikely. Jack FM in Oxford (owned by Absolute Radio International) do full match commentary on Oxford United games. |

Key 103/Magic's deal for Man Utd commentaries came to an end at the end of the season just finished. No word on a renewal or an alternative yet. The fact that last season's games were all shunted on to Magic AM would suggest that they aren't particularly fussed on renewing.
I believe Wish FM and Tower FM are going to continue to cover Wigan and Bolton respectively. Will be interesting to see if Blackburn get commentary again next year after BBC Lancashire refused to pay an amazingly increased fee to cover matches last year. |

No, I'd be amazed if they renewed which leaves Man Utd with very few other options unless they make a return to the BBC for the first time since 1999.

You should be able to pick them up easy. I've listened to games on 102.4 many a time down at the DW and would say the signal for it is 100% strong down there. |

UEFA are selling radio rights to both the upcoming UEFA Under-21 Championship (which begins today) and Euro 2012 through the EBU. Here's the press release confirming this from UEFA.com: Quote:
UEFA announced today an agreement with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for the radio rights for UEFA EURO 2012TM and UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2011. What is notable here is that while Euro 2012 rights will be sold through the EBU to radio stations in much of Europe, the Euro 2012 part of this deal does not apply to the UK.The deal covers the host countries of UEFA EURO 2012TM, Poland and Ukraine, and the host country of the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, Denmark. Other territories included in the agreement are Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Israel, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and, for the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship only, the UK. UEFA grants the public service radios in the above-mentioned respective territories the non-exclusive right to transmit all matches via radio enabling fans to enjoy extensive coverage of both competitions. Commenting on the agreement, UEFA said: "Following a very successful experience with the EBU during UEFA EURO 2008TM, we are extremely pleased to be in a position to extend our partnership for UEFA EURO 2012TM and the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. We are looking forward to working together with the EBU and its experienced radio broadcasters to offer football fans across Europe extensive radio coverage of both competitions." Therefore a station like Absolute Radio, whose parent company TIML Radio Limited is not an EBU member, would not be in a position to bid for rights to the UEFA Under-21 Championship but presumably would be permitted to acquire Euro 2012 rights if they can do so directly through UEFA or via another agency. talkSPORT, who famously were unable to bid for Euro 2000 rights due to their non-membership of the EBU at that time, incidentally are able to bid for the U21 Euros. Their parent company UTV Radio is a subsidiary of UTV, a EBU member broadcaster. I guess this deal must have been done a little while ago and was only revealed yesterday, as we know Radio 5 Live have been advertising their coverage of the UEFA Under-21 Championship for a little while - they must have at least agreed in principle to their deal a few weeks back. I've been listening to talkSPORT today and while the Under-21 Euros have been discussed at length, they've not trailed coverage of the games themselves so unless they are thrashing out commentary rights at the last minute I'd guess they'll just be doing reports only. |

Yeah Full Commentary. After an absence of three seasons, 102.4 Wish FM restarted covering Wigan home and away at the beginning of last season whilst 107.4 Tower FM also restarted covering Bolton home and away from christmas onwards.

Its a real shame if Real Radio NE are no longer doing football commentaries as of next season. I always had the chance to watch United games live so never really listened, but I know Justin Lockwood's commentary of the goals from the 5-1 win over Sunderland replayed a lot in the weeks after the match: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdShG...eature=related (compared to Chris Coopers commentary on the game which probably sums up how Sunderland would have felt watching it, not me I was over the moon so I got drunk and stayed out partying until gone 3AM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nA4IxY-xN7g)
Justin's commentary on the remarkable 4-4 game at home to Arsenal however actually got cult status amongst Newcastle fans, and it does sum up the unreal atmosphere that I witnessed from my seat in the Leazes End: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pCD6Qy_YDM |

Its interesting when Real say they dropped Sunderland commentaries as they didn't want people to think they were biased, this was never a problem when they had Middlesbrough only commentaries for many years. If Metro aren't interested theb there isn't really any other suitable commercial station to pick up Newcastle commentary rights but at least BBC Newcastle will still have commentary on every game. |

Be interesting to see if Radio Humberside stay with Grimsby Town commentaries. Last season (their first in non league in 99 years) full match commentaries were online (free of course) for every match and probably 90% on either DAB/AM/FM in that order.
So actually despite a lot of knockers Town fans got a better deal (if they owned a PC) |
