No doubt about that - although I think not calling in at the Bescot once on Tuesday evening wasn't the best decision, given that other local BBC stations in affected areas were happy to juggle less frequent football updates with the breaking news. I appreciate that they withdrew their scheduled reporter to monitor the situation of the streets of Birmingham, but I'm sure it wouldn't have detracted from their coverage of the riots had they called upon their usual Walsall expert or fans panel man via phone for a half and full-time report.

That being said, it would be harsh to knock them too much for this given that 1) it was a late judgement call 2) their presenter made a point of apologising to the fans who were expecting updates and 3) their coverage of the riots was largely excellent.

As for today, in the end BBC WM did full second half commentary on West Bromwich Albion v Manchester United with Adrian Goldberg's special from the Birmingham Peace Rally going out between 3-5pm. They only had updates from the first half.

Listening to 606, I do love listening to Savage, at least he offers opinions.

Jason Roberts last night was clearly trying not to criticise anyone but as he's still involved in the PL, it's difficult for him. He does come across well and he's far more interesting than some of the blandness that BBC, ITV and Sky offer on TV

If we're talking new shows for the new season, having been on a long journey home from a game last night I enjoyed listening to the new Football First programme with Ian Danter and Stewart Robson.

I've already posted about this in more detail in the talkSPORT Chat thread, but basically they've moved their considered reaction discussion programme from Sunday teatime to Saturday nights between 9pm-midnight.

On hearing about the scheduling change, I was less than convinced that it would transition well into its new timeslot but I was pleasantly surprised, as while many of the good things about the Sunday programme were kept they particularly appealed to long-distance travelling fans which was a shrewd move. There's a gap in the market for this kind of programme and I think it worked well.

Dants is one of the hardest working guys on talkSPORT. He reported on Birmingham v Coventry in the afternoon, then headed down to London to present Football First and was back on reporting duty for them at The Hawthorns today. I suspect we might hear him reporting on London-based games on Saturdays over the next few weeks, what with Andy Clarke now doing matches for TV most Saturdays and Mike Bovill and Andrew McKenna due to go out to the Rugby World Cup next month.

What with Queens Park Rangers now being in the Premier League and Football First moving to Saturday nights, I could see Alvin Martin replacing Neil Warnock as the regular expert on Sunday Exclusive this season, as was the case today. I'd be pleased if this is to be a permanent thing, Alv's not the biggest name out there but he's one of the best football pundits around in my opinion.

*I'm guessing Rob Phillips was commentator, as I don't have FM on my DAB/Mp3 player.

Oh, and Richard, the 'pat on the head thing' that Caerphilly's very own Robert Earnshaw did whilst being substituted is the Ayatollah. We've only been doing it for the last 20 odd years

It's Alan Green, Ian Dennis and Lawro tonight for 5Live

I presumed Green was on holiday still as you'd expect him to be at WBA yesterday. Maybe an early sign of him becoming less prominent especially as he's not on 606.

Although the 606 press release said he would still present shows. Robbie Savage also said that he would be back on Saturday's before Xmas so maybe there will be a rotation system with Savage, Roberts and Green.

Manchester City V Jackland

BBC Radio Wales - Steffan Garerro (hosting from the Etihad stadium) with commentary from Rob Phillips and Ian Walsh (FM / AM / Digital TV/Radio)

BBC Radio Cymru - Gareth Blainey and Iwan Roberts

Real Radio Wales - Mark Poyser (updates)

Swansea Sound - Antony O'Connell (hosting and commentating)

Well done to Mr Garrero for telling listeners that it would NOT have been the first time a Welsh club had been to the Premier League, as Jackland were in the First Division (Level 1 in the English league pyramid - like what the 'Premier League' is now) in 1982/83, and Cardiff City had been in the First Division during most of the 1920s.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but on the Real Radio Wales Sports Twitter account, Mark Poyser has himself down as the only member of the Sports team at said station. I didn't hear any updates from IRN people on Saturday, and there were no Steve Flemming, Mark Threadgold or anyone else at the Cardiff City V Bristol City game yesterday, so unless I'm mistaken, are Real Radio edging out their sports coverage in order to play more R.E.M?

Thanks Pakokelso93. It is difficult finding the IRN reporters, especially midweek. Interesting that Darren Stannage is not the reporter. Who is Richard Minnikin?

While I was listening talkSPORT also took a full-time report from Tony Incenzo at Portsmouth v Reading, the night's only other Championship game, via phone. I guess there must have been a problem with Tony's ISDN line as I didn't hear any second half updates from him.

On Sunday, talkSPORT's live commentary game will be Wolves v Fulham, which kicks off at 2pm, rather than Norwich City v Stoke City at 1.30pm. It's a shame that Sunderland v Newcastle has been moved to 12noon on Saturday rather than 12noon on Sunday, as it would have made for a good non-clashing double header on talkSPORT. As it stands the North East derby will get no live national coverage, with Radio 5 Live doing commentary on the televised Arsenal v Liverpool game and 5 Live Sports Extra carrying Test Match Special while the match is taking place.

This Saturday's 3pm national radio commentaries will be Everton v QPR on Radio 5 Live and Aston Villa v Blackburn Rovers on Absolute, with Jim Proudfoot and Tony Dorigo commentating on the latter. Swansea City v Sunderland will be Absolute's live game the week after that.
