Thanks for the info on last night and tonight everyone

Next Tuesday, 5Live have gone for Brighton vs Sunderland as their commentary, I thought they'd have Exeter vs Liverpool.

Their FL coverage has been great so far this season, in the past, tonight would have been a discussion show rather than commentary.

Yes i agree, i thought tonight's show had a good relaxed feel about it. David Pleat is a wise old reader of the game, I thought he was very good tonight pointing out tactical things he'd noticed (things that i would never have).

BBC Radio Scotland have announced on Facebook that their main game tonight on 810MW will be Maribor v Rangers, with Celtic v Sion on 92-95FM from 8pm (which is unusual, because normally only 810MW is available midweek).

Coverage of Hearts v Spurs is being left to Five Live, which makes sense to an extent, but it'll be interesting to see if they can avoid putting a pro-English slant on things.

Thursday 18th August - BBC WM

Dan Wheeler presenting The Football Phone-In from The Mailbox, followed by WM Sport with Mark Regan from Estadio da Madeira

UEFA Europa League Play-Off Round First Leg
Nacional v Birmingham City - Mark Regan (commentary)

BRMB and BCFC.com

David Salt presenting The Goalzone from BRMB's Brindley Place studios

UEFA Europa League Play-Off Round First Leg
Nacional v Birmingham City - Tom Ross and Chris Kershaw (commentary via crackly phone line)*

*BRMB have had problems with their line to the Estadio da Madeira tonight, hence why producer Salty has been presenting. Tom's co-commentator Chris Kershaw is Birmingham City's communications officer. BRMB haven't covered Aston Villa's recent European campaigns so this must be their first European commentary in years.

BBC Radio Scotland (810MW)

Richard Gordon presenting Sportsound live from Tynecastle, with Allan Preston.

Maribor v Rangers - Liam McLeod and Billy Dodds (commentary) with Chick Young pitchside
Hearts v Tottenham Hotspur - Brian McLaughlin (reporting; listeners directed to Five Live for commentary from Roddy Forsyth, Connor McNamara and Craig Levein)

BBC Radio Scotland (92-95FM)

Kenny McIntyre presenting Sportsound, also live from Tynecastle.

Celtic v FC Sion - Rob MacLean and Murdo MacLeod (commentary)

(That's a bit weird, having two presenters; with 20 minutes between the Rangers and Celtic KO times, surely Richard Gordon could have presented on both frequencies? Then at the end of the Rangers game, hand over to Rob MacLean for the closing stages at Celtic Park bringing all frequencies together...)

I wonder whether Five Live decided to have an Irish commentator alongside Roddy Forsyth, rather than an English one, specifically because Radio Scotland wouldn't be doing commentary.

I don't think Connor is just there because he's Irish, on the rare occassion that 5Live does an SPL, Connor is often the other commentator with Roddy.

I think that Conor is probably 4th-ranked behind Alan Green, Mike Ingham and John Murray so it's not a bad team at Tynecastle (unlike my team who will have to improve to be boys against men).

I know that; I just wonder whether Five Live might have wanted the "fellow Celt" factor to avoid Scottish listeners complaining that the only BBC radio commentary on the match had an overt pro-English bias. Probably over-thinking though ...

BRMB's coverage of the Birmingham match this evening was a real blast from the past - they had real problems with their line to Madeira all night so for the whole 90 minutes their commentary was the kind you hear on old TV/radio footage from games played outside of the UK. Due to the use of a crackly phone line, Chris Kershaw was barely able to contribute meaning Tom had to do the majority of the commentary on his own.

Must give a lot of praise to producer David Salt, I think he's filled in the gaps before but tonight not only did he step in on the numerous occasions when the line was briefly lost but he also presented all of the build-up, the half-time break and the full-time phone-in.

It was interesting that they chose him to present as they had Joe Holt (one of their commentators who covers The Sports Bar when Tom is away) also in the studio rounding up the other Europa League games. In any event, Salty won't have done his chances of getting some cover shifts on Orion's music shows any harm tonight.

A couple of correction to the presenting details I posted earlier - WM were smart to what might happen (although Mark Regan's line held up well from the bits I heard), so Dan Wheeler stuck around to front WM Sport including a post-match phone in afterwards, while over on BBC Radio Stoke although John Acres' face was on their website's schedule page, Matt and Nigel stuck around to present Praise & Grumble from Arena Thun in the end.

Signal 1 or 2 weren't doing commentary on FC Thun v Stoke City tonight (I suspect they didn't carry reports on the game either, seeing as sister station talkSPORT didn't), but they will be doing the second leg next Thursday. Apparently this Sunday's Norwich v Stoke game will be live on Signal 2 (on AM), as will all of the Potters domestic fixtures from now on aside from Saturday matches which will be on Signal 1 (on FM).

Presumably because Sundays (or to be more precise the Big Top 40 Show) and weekday evenings are a much bigger time for FM music listening than Saturdays.
