Thanks, Five Live's big 2 out for the first big 4 (or 6) game of the season.

Darren Fletcher is at the Reebok tomorrow, Green often does 4pm games at our place but given he's working today and there's a big game at OT on Monday I doubt it will be him.

Premier League
Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion - Matt Davies and Clive Walker (5.30pm commentary)

This is interesting. Sirius XM recently added a talkSPORT channel to their satellite radio platform, with them carrying much of their football coverage (including shows such as the Weekend Sports Breakfast, Call Collymore, Football First and The Press Pass). However, it appears as if Sirius XM are going to continue to take certain club's in-house commentaries rather than those from talkSPORT. Armed forces station BFBS are taking talkSPORT's Premier League commentaries though.

I think you're right. Absolute's game is confirmed as Swansea v Sunderland.

Wigan's rugby league team are involved in the Challenge Cup final at 2.30pm, hence the change of time for the football team.

Tom Ross presenting The Goalzone from the Riverside Stadium

Premier League
Wolverhampton Wanderers v Fulham - Mikey Burrows and Robbie Dennison (2pm Beacon commentary)

Championship
Middlesbrough v Birmingham City - Tom Ross and Tommy Mooney (3pm BRMB commentary)

Former Blues and Walsall forward Tommy Mooney is making his BRMB debut today, although he's no stranger to radio work. He's done a few co-commentaries on Watford matches for BBC Three Counties Radio alongside Jon Marks this season, including the Hornets' game at Coventry City yesterday. Producer David Salt is reading out listeners messages from the studio on both BRMB and Beacon's coverage this afternoon.

BBC WM

Daz Hale presenting WM Sport from Molineux

It's updates only coverage of the Blues game for BBC WM. Their reporter at the Riverside, James Mountford, is a former BRMB and WM commentator who became a football presenter on BBC Radio Tees five years ago. I wonder if he's doubling up today.

Indeed, but it's a huge rugby league town and it's bound to affect the gate if Wigan Athletic are playing at the same time that Wigan Warriors are playing in a major rugby league final, which is live on terrestrial TV.

That's why they are kicking off early, to allow people to go and watch the RL after the match.

Traditionally, Wigan football fans hate the rugby team and vice versa, so I can't see it having that much of an effect

What's happened to BIll Hatton? Isn't MIkey Burrows a Journo?

Bill Hatton still does the odd Wolves game for Beacon/Gold but he has gradually taken a far lesser role since Orion merged the presentation of their station's coverage under The Goalzone banner in 2009/10. He is now only an occasional voice on their coverage but still pops up every now and again.

Mikey Burrows is a newsreader on Beacon but he actually came their way as a football commentator, he'd been covering MK Dons games for Horizon Radio (now Heart Milton Keynes) before joining the Goalzone team in 2009.

The Goalzone's lead commentary pecking order is probably as follows:
1) Tom Ross - by a long way, as the main voice of their coverage he will typically do Villa, Blues or Albion games, but does the odd Wolves or Coventry match if they are the only one of their teams playing on any given day.
2) Joe Holt - he presents Gold's Sports Bar show when Tom is away and is the regular commentator on Coventry games for Mercia, but will commentate on Orion's other teams when the Sky Blues are not playing and if two or more of the four are playing on the same day.
3) Mikey Burrows - typically does Wolves or West Brom but again is likely to be heard covering Villa or Blues if two or more clubs are playing.

Then there's not much between the other three commentators they use, Adam Bridge, Steve Hermon and Bill Hatton, who you only tend to hear on days when four or five of Orion's clubs are playing. In Hatton's case, he is only ever called upon to do Wolves games.

All of them have other commitments; Bridge was BRMB's programme controller and now has a hand in the organisation of events like the Midland Music Festival and is also a commentator for the Perform Group's Watch&Bet service; Hermon is also a Beacon newsreader and regularly commentates on Walsall games for the club's Saddlers Player service and I believe Hatton has some kind of role at Wolves.

A word about BRMB's coverage of Middlesbrough v Birmingham City today. It was the first time I've heard Tommy Mooney as a co-commentator and already I'm convinced he's a natural. I liked listening to his interviews as a player so it didn't surprise me that he came across intelligently, but during today's match he interpreted the game really well, explained the tactical aspects coaches and players discuss in an interesting manner and his insight into footballers' differing matchday dietary routines at half-time was of particular interest. It doesn't surprise me that he's in demand on a number of different stations - I'd like to hear more of him in the future.
