Next Saturday lunchtime, 5Live have got Rangers vs Hearts commentary which is good to hear

Sat 6th August I'd imagine they will have a 3pm commentary from the Championshop. Derby vs Birmingham is likely but they might fancy Brighton vs Doncaster given the new ground and a newly promoted team

"Villa Matt" Smith has tweeted that on the first day of the Football League season, he'll be producing Matchday Live which will come from Pride Park with Adrian Durham presenting from the ground and Nigel Pearson reporting on Derby County v Birmingham City.

Sam Matterface has intimated on Twitter that will be reporting on Brighton & Hove Albion v Doncaster Rovers, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is to present Call Matterface from the Amex Community Stadium given that Stan Collymore doesn't usually return from his summer break until the first day of the Premier League season.

It'll be interesting to see if talkSPORT bring in any new football reporters to cover London and the South-East come the start of the league season. I've thought for a little while that it'll be a necessity for them to bring in a few new reporters from this area, particularly during the first two to three months of the new season.

If you look at their four longest-serving London football correspondents, Mike Bovill and Andrew McKenna will both be in New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup during September and October and will be covering the pre-tournament warm-up games in August. Andy Clarke, while still a regular reporter in midweek, was rarely heard at weekends last season due to his commentary commitments for Sky Sports, Premier League Productions and Perform's Watch&Bet service. He commentated on Arsenal's latest friendly for Arsenal TV yesterday so perhaps we'll hear even less of him on talkSPORT this season. Ian Abrahams has long been a staple of Saturday's Matchday Live programme, but what with him working a five day week as the sports newsreader on The Sports Breakfast he is rarely heard on Sunday games (that's not to say he has the day off - he tends to commentate on Sunday games for Watch&Bet when he's not on talkSPORT).

So who will come in? What with Queens Park Rangers having been promoted to the Premier League, I suspect Tony Incenzo will join them in covering top flight football regularly (since joining the station in 2004, the majority of matches he has covered have been from the Championship) and not just in terms of home games involving the Rs but those of the other London clubs too.

Kev Lawrence began reporting on matches played in the capital towards the end of last season - I remember one weekend when he was their pitchside man at a commentary game at Arsenal while Humberside reporter Grahame Lloyd got to cover the East Anglian derby, the biggest game on KL's patch.

Antony D'Angelo, who was a London-based reporter for talkSPORT before becoming one of their leading producers, may have been a candidate to fill the void during the RWC but he has recently moved to Radio 5 Live. There is a pool of London-based freelancers who read evening/weekend news bulletins for the station, so perhaps a few of these guys will be given their chance to report on matches in the absence of others.

I'm not sure being able to call upon just two or three reporters in the capital will be enough for talkSPORT given that there are five London clubs in the Premier League and four more in the Championship (plus Reading). You also have to take into consideration that talkSPORT don't have a specific South Coast reporter, meaning the South-East based guys have taken turns to cover games down there in past seasons, which stretches resources even further.

With three South Coast teams in this season's Championship, it is high time that talkSPORT filled this gap in their network of reporters by bringing in someone who can cover games from this area of the country for them on a regular basis.

Aside from Peter Martin, who replaced Mark Donaldson as their Scottish football correspondent, talkSPORT didn't bring in any new reporters last season but due to their shortage of London voices particulary during the first third of the campaign I'd be very surprised if this was the case this year.

A snippet in this morning's Daily Mail:

Quote:
“talkSPORT are looking at Andy Gray doing Premier League co-commentaries next season, which is sure to concern Stan Collymore, who has two seasons remaining on a three-year deal as the main match pundit.

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...#ixzz1Sckl6dwf”

This doesn't surprise me whatsoever.

I do like Stan, but I've always thought they should mix it up a little bit rather than have the same people doing the majority of the live games.

Fixing the link for you: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/foo...an-Robson.html (It doesn't work at my end) Thanks for posting the article.

Interesting report, first of all its news to me that Stan Collymore is on a three-year contract as it was well documented that the first deal he signed with talkSPORT was a two-year one.

But on further thought this would make sense, as Stan's current deal covers the duration of the three-season contract the station has with the Premier League, whereas his previous one would have covered the remaining two seasons of their previous 2007/08 to 2009/10 contract as well as the World Cup when he joined the station in the summer of 2008.

Because of this, I wonder how feasible bringing in Andy Gray to a co-commentary role over Stan's head would be. Given the offers he is said to have received, including one from the BBC, when his last contract expired, I would not be surprised if he has assurances guaranteeing him a certain number of live matches (and editions of Call Collymore) per season written into his contract that might be difficult for them to get around.

Maybe putting Gray onto Champions League and Euro 2012 games would be more straight forward for talkSPORT at this stage, given that the rights status of those matches are not set in stone like the Premier League radio rights are. But then again, the contract Stan agreed to may be far less prohibitive than I think.

It's worth noting this is all newspaper talk at the moment. While I've never been one to denigrate Charles Sale as some in the Football Commentators thread in the Broadcasting section do, as he does have a good track record of reporting sports commentary news before it goes public (his exclusive about Guy Mowbray commentating on the World Cup Final for BBC One springs to mind), he doesn't always hit the mark and indeed his past report about Stan Collymore looking to leave talkSPORT last summer never came to fruition. I've no doubt that there's an interest in moving Gray to commentaries at talkSPORT's end but as Sale says, they are only "looking" at the moment.

If talkSPORT were to move Andy Gray to Premier League co-commentaries, I think they would opt to move him - and possibly Richard Keys as well - to the Sunday Exclusive games. With Neil Warnock being unlikely to commit to being a regular voice on Sunday Exclusive this season due to QPR's promotion, now is a good time to refresh the show's line-up and by, at the very least, having Keys and Gray as it's presentation pairing would make good commercial sense and would be a good way of introducing them to their live coverage ahead of Euro 2012.

Whatever happens, I think Stan Collymore should (and in all likelihood will) keep the Saturday teatime co-commentaries, given that these games are typically less attractive fixtures to the Sunday matches and are infrequent. The flexibility of his Call Collymore phone-in is key here, in that you can run it either after a live game or between 5-7pm if there's not one without the schedule having great disparity from week to week.

Whereas on Sunday you could have Gray co-commentating on the Sunday 1.30pm game (or the first game of a double header) with him and Keys then anchoring post-match reaction from 3.30-6pm with Stan Collymore chipping in from the 4pm game and then presenting Call Collymore from there between 6-7/8pm. They could work it in a way where Collymore would not lose out in terms of his phone-in and still keep a fair chunk of Premier League commentaries as well as Champions League matches.

First of all, welcome to the forum Carl.

Where are you hearing this regarding Luke Shanley? I know the name - he reports on Scottish games for Soccer Saturday/Special and occasionally for BBC Radio Scotland too. He's a Hibernian fan and was once a poster on DigitalSpy.

It's worth noting that Peter Martin continues to be talkSPORT's Scottish football correspondent despite his lack of regular match reporting involvement on the station. I heard him rounding up the Scottish transfer news on The Transfer Tavern just the other day.

I happen to think Martin is a pretty good reporter from what I've heard of him, but the obvious problem with him is that because of his pitchside reporting duties on SPL games for Sky Sports, he's rarely available to cover the kind of matches talkSPORT would want him to do outside of Scotland internationals and Scottish club's games in European competitions.

With his predecessor Mark Donaldson, while sometimes you knew he was working off-tube and/or was only able to file half and full-time reports due to his Hearts commitments, at least he was regularly available to cover games in some form. This isn't the case with Martin, so for talkSPORT to call upon another reporter based in Scotland would be very welcome.
