I think he's a better television personality than he is a comedian. Give him more freedom.
The thing is he's always had a good sense of timing and the mechanics of how to put an act together, but his material is often weak or obvious (Stewart Lee did a nice take off recently). If they let him speak naturally, his eye for detail would come across insightfully, I think, as he's a very studied performer, in his mannerisms, and that comes from observing what others do well, and what can be improved. It's that kind of ethic that elevates his act far beyond what his writing merits, and he deserves some respect for that, I think.
