Your right.

iTunes in the cloud is pretty disappointing. I was expecting a Spotify type setup.

The whole cloud thing still doesn't attract me. I want to have the thing I own - not have my pictures / music somewhere else in the world in a server.

I'm not sure what you mean. You'll still have it on your device, same as you do now. Anyway, I imagine it's optional. You can still sync with your computer as you always have.

Looks like iCloud has already started on the App Store. I can see all the apps I've downloaded, including ones not on my phone. That's not particularly groundbreaking though, since I could always re-download them from the App Store anyway.

Disappointing that you can have all your purchased music in the cloud for free, without having to upload it yourself like with Amazon & Google?

Disappointing that you can have all your ripped music in the cloud for $24.99 (cheaper than Amazon), without having to upload it yourself like with Amazon & Google?

As for the rest of iCloud...

Mail/Contacts/Calendars OTA sync dooesn't bother me - I already have this for free via Google, so what Apple is (finally) doing is simply matching a pre-existing free service.

I love the idea of Documents in the Cloud, though. Much better than Dropbox, as it's fully integrated plus works with iWork.

Most interesting addition as I see it is that an iPhone or iPad now won't need to be synced to iTunes to be used.

So finally, you could recommend one to technophobe friends and family who doesn't have or want a PC, but still wants to access this internet thing they might have heard about.

The iPad in particular is now finally, potentially an alternative to a PC rather than an addition to one. I can think of one or two folk whom that would be useful.

And it only took 'em 5 versions to make it so.

I still dont get this cloud thing really. I just drop everything to each device. Takes 5 mins and is a hell of a lot faster than downloading from the cloud.

So far iOS appears to be Android by Apple, Single sign on twitter == Android account manager
Don't suppose any of Android got its ideas from iOS?

I don't need another Spotify; I have Spotify, I'm using it on my iPhone right this second.

Having my two Macs, iPhone and iPad in sync with regards to photos, documents, music and calendars is a big deal - that service, and for free, seems like a bit of a game changer. Really like some of the tweaks to iOS too, notifications have been a long time coming (sure people were speculating about a similar system at last year's WWDC), and the Newsstand app will be good if publishers embrace it.

£20.99 (really couldn't have dropped the £1?) for Lion is certainly cheap, is use of it required for the Mac side of iCloud? I'm still not sure I want to lose Rosetta (PowerPPC emulator).

It may be more of a pseudo cloud in that if its on a disk there is no need to fetch it to propagate.

Drag and drop is quite alien to many people. And not too many will know about web photo integration stuff.

Yep, that really is a big thing, and about time too.

It means you won't need to hook up to your computer & sync your music, apps, documents etc. separately to each device, it's just done wirelessly from the "cloud".

Buy a new app on one device...it's there for all.

Buy music on one device... it's there for all.

Create/edit a document on one device... it's there for all.

Much better IMO.

Yup. I already have free Mail/Contact/Calendar OTA sync via Google, but to also have free photo, document, & music OTA sync via iCloud will be excellent... especially Documents.

Is it really though? Takes me 5 mins to transfer my music etc to my devices. Would take double that wirelessly especially if i was outside.

Apps, on Android they are tied to your account so it will work on any phone and any tablet/device that runs android.

So tbh i see nothing special about this whatsoever.

My wife and I each have an iPhone. Both devices are set up using the same ITunes account so we can purchase apps and install them on both devices if we want to. But overall we each keep different apps, tunes, photos etc on our devices.

If iCloud syncs across devices automatically does it mean that every time she downloads an app it automatically appears on my device? If I take a photo on my phone it automatically appears on hers?

Yup. It all works based on your Apple ID. Hate to say it I but I fear the days of you doing the above are numbered. The only way you could avoid it is if Apple allow you to 'opt out' of the cloud system by disabling it on the phone and using the old fashioned iTunes method of doing things but I fear you're in for a bit of a headache.

Apple will still have to support older devices that don't support the cloud or recent versions of iOS, so iTunes syncing isn't going anywhere for now. So on reflection perhaps you can simply keep working it as you have been and just disable any cloud syncing.

Rest in peace MobileMe.
The invited press may well be under orders to hardly utter the word considering it was such a flop.

For music it will do ok if it is a case of iAmTheOnlyCloud on IOS.

If you plug your phone in & sync some music to it, does that music get automatically synced with your tablet too?

If you buy an app on your tablet, does that app get automatically synced with your phone too?

If you edit a document on your tablet, does the edited version become automatically synced with your phone too?

If you take photos on your phone while out, are they already right there on your tablet when you return home?

Ditto for iOS.

MobileMe deserved to be a flop. $99 per year for mail, contact, & calendar OTA sync, along with iDisk storage, when you can get totally free mail/contact/calendar OTA sync with Google and free storage with Dropbox, Windows SkyDrive etc.

No, but like i say, i can still put my music on my 2 devices faster than they will get synced by the cloud. That to me is more important.

Yes.

If you edit a document on your tablet, does the edited version become automatically synced with your phone too?
There is sorftware to do that. I dont ever do that so not important..

If you take photos on your phone while out, are they already right there on your tablet when you return home?
Again that can be done easily.

What will all this mean for battery life and mobile data allowance? I'm thinking particularly about taking photos on the iPhone. Surely both will take a hammering if every photo is automatically uploaded to the cloud? I'm sure this is true in other apps too.

They said over wi-fi, was no mention of 3G for this very reason.

I'm not 100% convinced about "iCloud" either. I don't want, nor need, everything to be spirited away to some Apple server at the drop of a hat - I don't do it now and I won't need to do it in the foreseeable future. Also, the only new aspect of this is the media side of things as email, calendar etc already synced to multiple devices.

Also, I hate it when Apple come away with such phrases as this:
With iOS 5, we’ve added over 200 new features — taking a mobile operating system that was already years ahead of anything else and moving it even further ahead.
"was already ahead of anything else"? Really? If that is true, why have they only just gotten round to implementing features that have already been available on Android, Blackberry and WP7 for years?

As much as I like iOS, Apple really are a little big headed over it all.

Yeah it was amusing lol

Also the bit that threw me was the userbase. Saying they were miles ahead of Android which isnt the case. Until that was i noticed it was for the US only. Worldwide would be a different matter so guess thats why they never used those figures lol

And for as much as they are doing well, Android's share has risen by 5.2% in the last quarter alone in America - Apple was up only 1.3%.

I think more people would like and appreciate Apple if they got off of the "we-created-everything-and-everybody-else-copied-us" high horse that they seem to be on.

Just watched the Keynote. My provisional summary; a few moderately, potentially interesting things hidden within a herd a white elephants.

Lion, I see very little to get excited about here. And the removal of Rosetta is a deal killer anyway. Thanks, but no thanks.

iOS 5, a few interesting but minor tweaks to a rather long in the tooth platform. Remains to be seen which features they artificially remove for the 3GS. Removing the necessity to synch with iTunes is the one big plus.

And as for iCloud, for me, the very textbook definition of 'white elephant'. As long as you're fully integrated into the Apple ecosystem, I'm sure it could be fine. But if you're not - as I'd guess most folk aren't - virtually useless.

I guess there's no room for dinosaurs like me in Steve's post-PC utopia.

Also, I have seen quoted online that you only get 5GB storage with iCloud. What use is that? That equates to a couple hundred songs, some photos, some videos and some documents.

I'm really not looking forward to iCloud too much.

http://www.apple.com/icloud/what-is.html

When you sign up to iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage.

And that’s plenty of room, because of the way iCloud stores your content.

Your purchased music, apps, and books, as well as your Photo Stream, don’t count against your free storage.

That leaves your mail, documents, Camera Roll, account information, settings, and other app data. And since those things don’t use as much space, you’ll find that 5GB goes a long way.
