As said above it's about the Operating system (iOS5) which is currently in beta. I suspect it will be released to the public at about the same time as the iPhone 5 is released - probably after the summer hols.

edit: I see you've edited the OP and thread title now

Yes it is and a handful of those features have been out on other OS's for some time.

I am quite impressed by what I have seen from iOS5 and thank god it now has a better notification system as the 'old' one sucked.

Best bits are the notifications and the fact you don't need to be near a pc to activate the phone over iTunes.

about this bit...

Once you install iOS 5, the software now goes off and finds out what you've bought in the past through Apple's App Store and keeps a record of it so if you lose your phone or your iTunes library goes bang, you can still get your apps.
I've had that feature the last few days and I haven't updated anything.

It's under 'app store - updates - purchased'.

To be fair - and I say this as a huge Android fan, and user for the past two years - you could equally argue that many of Android's features, such as pinch-to-zoom, have been "copied" from Apple.

Yes it's only right and natural that there will be an intermingling of the best features from each OS. Android did copy Apple, as Apple did copy Palm before them, etc etc.
This competing between Apple, Google, Microsoft & Blackberry is all to our benefit at the end of the day.

As another Android fan however, I am more looking forward to the next 'Ice Cream Sandwich' release at the end of the year that claims to have a holographic user interface! <gasp>

That change was server side. The App store 'app' is just a specialised little web browser. In fact you could download previously purchased apps in the past too. They've just made it more obvious now.

Yep it's currently just a Developer Preview (first of several I would presume) so that the devs can test it with their existing and forthcoming apps to ensure their apps don't have any problems with it for when it is eventually released 'in the fall'.

Apparently IOS 5 has been Jailbroken already - so I might be interested in upgrading when it becomes available

You wont find me arguing otherwise.

Wonder if google will do an apple, and sue apple for blatant copying. Much like Apple did with Samsung.

I did wonder considering Pandora had to pull their service out of the UK.
For some reason have WE7, which is brilliant quality on a mobile.

A real shame. Presumably other then the music laundering service (not my words) the other free parts of iCloud will still be available to us in the UK.

stats generated by companies with tracking software put it at around 10%-20%
Have you a source for that? I think 0.1% sounds far more probable.

For anyone tempted to put the dev preview om their main phone - don't! Friend of mine has, and it's unstable enough to be barely useful. Wait for the final release

According to that 2 page article there was no cloud music streaming anyway, just wifi and a cloud sync.
So essentially it is wifi sync for the UK and is thus limited by the memory capacity of each device.

I was reading about this the other day. I find it ridiculous that Apple sued Samsung for copyright infringement because Samsung made the Samsung Galaxy the same shape as the iPhone and the Android software on it looked like iOS.

Has Apple not realised that all modern mobiles are the same shape and use the same grid layout for icons?! Even my 5 year old SE phone had the same design and software layout...

Between the two actually! I remembered it incorrectly (though the latest data was a couple of years out of date)

http://isource.com/2009/08/05/percen...ises-a-little/

puts it at 8.43 percent.

I suspect that the court case is only there to get some negative publicity.

If it helps keep the public mindset that everything is either inferior or a cheap copy of an IOS device, even losing the case means there may be some gain.
The fact that even Steve Jobs in interviews has in the past referred to other stores as being 'app stores' certainly hints at a range of motives.
