I tried getting Orange (uk) to unlock my phone so I could use it with another sim. They said I had to wait a few months and even then it would take 2 weeks or more.

Soo I went to my local mobile phone shop and guy said give me te imei number and I will get message in iTunes once it is unlocked. Said he can do what Orange do. - ask Apple to unlock

So I paid him £55 for it.

Its now been 5 days and nothing. I ring guy up but he says be patient.

Seems terribly expensive at £55 and as I'm reading here http://www.thegeeksclub.com/remote-u...-now-available I'd be sceptical.

edit: according to http://obamapacman.com/2011/04/how-t...actory-unlock/ it can take 5 days for your imei to be added to the whitelist and you're required to restore your phone.

These other companies seem to be unofficially accessing this "white list" and Apple seem fine with it. As there's no mention anywhere of Apple closing the loophole for want of a better word.

The article you linked to above says the loophole was closed 2 days after it was discovered.

UPDATE 2: loophole for unofficial carriers shut down within 2 days. Unlocked phones stay unlocked.

I missed that bit. I only read through the articles quickly to find out how it worked via just an IMEI number. thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah I did read somewhere that Apple have blocked these 'official' unlocks. But there are still people offering them (for certain non-US carriers). http://cutyoursim.com/index.php/ipho...g-service.html
