Philips DVO520 IR Sensor Problem

Hello. I've got a Philips DVP520 DVD player which works fine except that the machine's IR sensor will not respond to the remote even though I have renewed the batteries therein. I note that the IR sensor on the front of the machine is not lit up. (I can't recall whether this sensor was illuminated before I had this problem and I can't find anything in the user manual which states that the sensor should be lit up.) So assuming that the sensor should be lit up is there any economically viable (given the unit's age) repair which is available? Thanks.

I would be very surprised if the sensor lights up. Never seen an illuminated one on any bit of kit before.

It could also be the remote not emitting infra red signals. If you can get hold of a universal remote and can find a suitable code for your machine then that may be one way to narrow down where the problem actually is. Even better would be a known working remote of the same type or a similar player you can test your remote on.

Thanks for killing off the suggestion that the IR sensor should be illuminated. I'll follow through on your suggestions relating to the remote.

Ok. Having now established that it's the remote which is very likely to be the source of the problem I have deliberately dropped it on the floor from a height of around 3 feet and it now works! The unit has been dropped a bit over it's life so it probably has developed a loose connection as a result of this mistreatment so by dropping it just now I have clearly mended the loose connection! Thanks for your help, chrisjr.
