When a plasma telly breaks down...

Do they / can they go bit by bit ?
Or do they just suddenly "not work" ?
Today when I left for work, my 42" Philips plasma was working fine.
W hen I got home, I looked on my Sky planner and a programme I recorded said " Power Cut 9.15 am".
The Sky is working okay, but my TV has lost all colour.
Is my telly dying ?
Recently, there have been thin horizontal lines appearing on the screen.
My telly is about 5 years old

How is the telly connected to the Sky box?

If you are using SCART and have the video mode set to S-Video then you can get black and white if one end has switched to Composite mode.

Or you were using Composite and one end has switched to S-Video - either way round having S-Video one end and Composite the other will give black and white.

If the "TV has lost all colour" then this is nothing to do with the connection between the TV and the Sky box - as this would only affect the colour when watching Sky. The OP said that the TV had lost all colour - presumably even when not watching Sky,

As "chrisjr" has said, the output settings on your Sky box may have reset to a default.

The settings may need to be set back to what they were before the power cut.

More info is needed really. As chrisjr said, how is the Sky box connected to the TV?

You presume too much methinks!

The Sky is connected via scart.
The 42" telly went black and white, so I've swapped it with the telly in the back room
I am watching telly on a 32" screen now

But have you checked the video settings on both the Sky box and plasma telly to make sure they are the same?

Unfortunately Philips TV's aren't known for been reliable. and faint horizontal lines sounds like something was failing before this happened.

I'm presuming you've tried turning the colour back up?, the settings 'might' have been corrupted - although it might be corruption requiring the EEPROM to be replaced, and possibly faulty capacitors.

Don't waste your time.
Sky boxes do not output S-Video from either scart socket, they have a standard S-Video socket and you've already stated you're connected by scart.

EDIT. I should also add...standard Sky boxes do not output S-Video, only Sky+ can.

Call up a menu on the TV, is it in colour? This might give a guide to the problem. If there is no colour in the menus that's probably a bad sign.

Regardless of what has been previously said it's best to make sure the output/input video settings are identical for Sky box and the TV.

It's also possible that a work-around might be possible. Try a different scart socket on the TV, or try a composite input (yellow phono usually) Composite is not very good quality though.

If the TV has component inputs (marked Y, Pb, Pr / coloured red green blue phono sockets) you could try a DVD player with component output to see if these inputs work.

If they do work then you can buy scart to component boxes for about £50, these convert the output of the Sky box to component. Cheaper than buying a new 42" TV

Irrelevant really

It doesn't matter which end is set to S-Video. If one end is set to Composite and one end to S-Video the result will be black and white. Doesn't make any difference which end is which the result is the same.

However as Tassium says if the menus on the TV are also in black and white and there is no problem with the setting of the colour control then chasing the video mode may be a waste of effort.
