Just using the female companions from the revival, not the whole series. Forget which characters you like the most, just focus on the acting.

I would say
1. Billie Piper
2. Catherine Tate
3.Freema Agyeman
4. Karen Gillan

I don't think Karen is a bad actress, she is pretty good but is just the most limited IMO. Well, it was a toss up between her and Freema

Karen's surely going to get a BAFTA nom for series 6 if she carries on like this. She can win it.

1) Karen Gillan. Easily the most talented and versatile.
2) Catherine Tate. I hated the character she played, but she was at least believable when playing her.
3) Billie Piper. Overacted almost continuously in her second series. Thoroughly overrated.
4) Freema Agyeman. I'm not sure she ever actually acted at all. Just recited her lines while looking bewildered.

And this is from someone who likes them all. Both the gingers benefited from having plenty to sink their teeth into, from comedy to tragedy, and they've both excelled.

Exactly what I would have written, but you beat me to it

Donna was also my favourite companion, and I couldn't stand Martha, maybe it wasn't the character, but Freema's wooden acting though(just my own personal opinion,in no way do I expect anyone else to agree)

I don't really know much about drama to tell if it's bad acting or not. They have all seemed good so far.
The only person I can say who was awful was the actress who played Helen Cutter in Primeval. She was awful.

I would have to say that sometimes it's not the actor, but a bad script or poor direction. That being said however, Freema Agyeman was HORRIBLE

Why exclude Bernard Cribbins from this?

Catherine Tate (Fantastic actress, comedy and drama. Amazing and just couldn't get enough Donna Noble)

Billie Piper (Second favourite companion and I am a sucker for romance and she played it so beautifully)

Freema Agyeman (Meh)

Karen Gillan (Annoying, plastic, fake, unbelievable and ruined every episode of confidential by being an annoyingly loud hyperactive moron)

Whilst Freema is one of my favourite companions I'd be the first to admit she did have many 'wooden' moments, but I found her portrayal of the character extremely likable.

Amy pond is my least favourite companion but fully realise that Karen is playing the role as written and directed, so it would be harsh and fanboyish to put her last just because I don't like that character.

I just wish she/they would have incorporated more of Karen's 'dizziness' and sense of fun into the character then I might have been more responsive to Amy's plight over series 5-6, instead all I see is a stroppy miserable companion. That said she was brilliant in The Eleventh Hour and Vincent but it was down hill apart from them. So maybe that is why this whole Amy arc has not worked for me.

I also think Rory as a character works far better when away from Amy Pond, i.e isn't being er..p*ssy whipped' by her. I actually found a bit of Rory love in the Flesh two parter.

I do believe the OP mentioned female companions, otherwise Rory, Jack and Mickey should be included too.

I dont like to rank . but tate nailed it. binary binary binary. Kingston is superb . loved the way that when she sacrificed herself I believed she had known the Doctor for years. every sceneshe is in is spot on.

karen and billie are good. freema was saddled with an unsatisfying role. not her fault. but I struggle to recall much about her scenes.

arthur is clearly a good actor.

does rose's mother count as a companion? excellent acting. good character. A highlight of the revival.

1. Catherine Tate: Simply, a hugely talented actress, very very convincing performances.
2. Karen Gillen: A very young actress showing enormous talent for her debut role. BIG future looms I feel. DOes "scared" really really well imo!
3. Arthur Darvill: Acts good comedy and has impecable timing, not sure I can take him too seriously in menacing situations though. I stand to be disproved!
4. Alex Kingston: Great all round actor, great character, great everything, but pipped at the post by the above.
5. John Barrowman: Acts well as the hero, but not convinced by his scared/hopelessness (for his companins obviously!)
6. Noel Clark: Great actor, great talent, better in more gritty stuff, not cut out for Who IMO
3. Billy Piper: Just don't like her acting.
4. Freema Agyeman: Simply awful, as Ting said, she looked like she was just reading a script, she didn't act at all.
