Afternoon! Just got back in time to watch the omnibus, though I see we're an hour behind the rest of you again. Flipping River City...

Have to say, I never thought they'd cut the scene - I don't think EE have ever cut a scene between the first showing and the omnibus and it would be a pretty awful precedent to set.

New Chryed Info

Denise's Soap Surgery - Christian & Syed

For everyone who missed it or just wants to see it again!
Thank you!

Yeah, me too. As surprised as I was that they had the scene to begin with, I really didn't expect they would cut it from the omnibus. And thankfully they didn't.

I am curious about the complaints though. Not sure whether the fact that nothing has been reported as yet means it was received well.
I think we probably would have heard by now if there had been lots of complaints It wasn't overtly sexual or inappropriate in any form, so hopefully not too many people took offence to it

And isn,t it great to see?
If we can watch hetero couples in bed, what is the problem with a couple in a loving relationship?

I really hope there weren't too many complaints...it was such a beautiful scene and completely appropriate for pre-watershed They will have got lots of comments praising the scene too which is good And if anyone took offence to the bed scene their opinions are wrong anyway ....../unashamedly biased

We heard fom Zee,s own lips that she wished all her children could stay small forever--so they are maleable to her wishes and have no say in thier own lives.A decent mother wishes for her children to be healthy and above all--happy.In this life-it is all we can hope for.
I really don,t think this is anything to do with feeling Syed would be a bad father,I,m sure if she knew about Amira,s secret she would be delighted--her first grandchild--blood related. The problem here is Christian, and Syed,s relationship with him.Still talking about shame,Syed,s homosexuality is something she cannot cope with. It,s the Gay thing--HER son having sex with A MAN!Her son, choosing a MAN above his wife,Her son planning a life with another MAN For them to raise a child is a fiction and she thinks her disapproval will be enough to quash the idea--luckily,Syed has moved on.He has the person he loves and shares thier desires. It,s either that,or a life not lived .
Great post, all of it, I think you're right, she thinks she can still quash him and this plan that doesn't fit in with her own ideas. Thankfully, Syed's stronger now and believes he deserves a happy life.

No, I never thought that either - if they were going to cut it, I'd have thought they'd have done so before sending the preview DVD out.

I'm sure there were some complaints, but it doesn't look so far like there were enough for the BBC to do one of their press releases thing. It's all progress!

Hiya!
Think we can take it as said there must have been complaints--there always is,homophobes abound! But,as you say--it,s serious progress that scenes such as this can pass relatively unapposed.Perhaps the Great British Public are FINALLY growing up!

Agree but I think todays repeat of EastEnders will be telling. Sunday, kids are off. Family day. I think far more people tuned into the repeat today the normal, as episodes this week were up against BGT and EE ratings did suffer as a result. I wouldn't rule out a complaint report just yet. If we don't hear anything by the end of next week, I think its safe to say, that it didn't cause any kind of public outrage (not that I think it did anyway. :sleep.

Hi . It is progress isn't it, it's good. It's a while since this 2008 Dailyfail () article, although it sounds like the official EE/BBC response hasn't changed since then, about treating all relationships with equality......

HD nekkidness hurrah! Though the picture was so good it looked like JP had food in his chest hair... He probably didn't though.

IMO Mas has no concept of the Chryed relationship-it,s never been on his radar,he doesn,t understand and he has no wish to.His son is a "failure"--period.As a father, all he can see is a son who has defied his authority, embarked on a lifestyle he has no way of understanding and therefore is unworthy of any of his consideration. He demanded Syed give up Christian--Syed couldn,t-so Mas washes his hands.Easy for him--but the situation doesn,t go away.
This was a really great post in explaining Masood's feelings towards Syed and his relationship, I think. It's so much more than prejudice or wanting to please Zainab (this has never sat right with me - logically or morally). It's a pit of patriarchy, long seated thoughts of Syed as weak and other false, negative things, and an overwhelming desire not to have his own 'authority' flounced in his face. I like how they've shown this to a smaller degree with Tam recently, in how Masood flares up when he dares opposes him or, ironically, displays a rival 'masculine strength'. That's a great paradox with Masood's hateful, sad view of Syed and his family: he says he hates weakness from the first born, but sees red when he shows strength (in defying him).

Very good point, we'll have to wait and see... I went and had a look at the Complaints bit of the BBC website and there seems to be great variety in how long it takes them to put up an official response to complaints - there's one there after 4 days and one closer to a month.

Ooh, bed scene about to air on BBC Scotland!

Zainab: "It wasn't about you [Yusef], he [Masood] wanted to hurt me" -still all about you then Zainab?

ETA: yes it's ultimately about Zainab, but I think it might have been a leeeetle bit about Yusef too Zainab!!

*Checks pulse* - still alive.
*Looks outside* - birds still singing, neighbour still washing car, children still playing, dogs still barking.

The world didn't come to an end just because two people who love each other were seen sharing a bed!!

They have actually - didn't they cut Christian's snog on the bench after it received complaints in the week? Don't know. They did it with something...I helpfully can't remember what. They've definitely cut scenes for 'timing'. I recall a Syed praying scene was cut in September '09. I remember because it was gorgeous and they ruined it

I didn't really think they'd cut this bed scene though. As you say, that would be pretty blatant.

That's a good idea. I don't think anyone has yet, but I'd like to. Our best bet is to send one to Marc as there's a higher chance he'll see it.

I missed this post earlier.

I agree with both of you, wholeheartedly.

While Masood’s need to please Zainab do play a part, I don't think it stops there. It's deeper than that, ALOT deeper.

He does view Syed as weak and a constant failure. I've always maintained that about the father-son dynamic, for a while now and I still believe this to be very much the case. Syed is only worthy of being his son, so long as Masood remains supremacy. It’s all about control and Syed adhering to Masoods family politics. It’s not so much that Syed’s deviating from whats expected but that he’s deviating from his father. I mean it’s nothing personal. We know that but for Masood, for everytime Syed does something doesn’t toe his party line, it’s another reason to beat him with a stick. Syed failed. He’s let him down again. Masood puts him on this pedestal but he also expects him to fall. I think a part of him wants Syed too, just so he could be there, point the finger and say “See, I told you, you have made a mistake, you have let us down – thanks for confirming what I already know about you, but what your mother fails to see”. This has always been crux of it, not Zainab or his own prejudices. Syed defies him that kills Masood.

These posts are exactly the reason why I want a four hander with some deep father and son discussion about their relationship. These issues exist but they’re hardly spoken of. We need to see it all bought to the forefront.

I'd be happy to but seeing as I've already written to Marc twice he might get a bit worried that he has a stalker
