I didn't really think they'd cut this bed scene though. As you say, that would be pretty blatant.”

I never knew that, thank you - during the period I wasn't watching EE. I know they sometimes move scenes around to improve flow but didn't realise they cut them.

Ah well, if I'd known that I might have been more worried but it would still have been a bad move by the BBC with no justification - the great thing about the bed scene was that it was unambiguous, not cut short or badly lit, but there was absolutely nothing that anyone could legitimately complain about. I'm so proud of EE.

Yeah, I was amazed when I noticed the 'timing' cut. I always used to watch just the omnibus and it made me wonder what scenes I'd missed for twenty years. We need LWP for actual facts on the 'cutting due to complaints' thing - though you could rely on me making stuff up

While Masood’s need to please Zainab do play a part, I don't think it stops there. It's deeper than that, ALOT deeper.

He does view Syed as weak and a constant failure. I've always maintained that about the father-son dynamic, for a while now and I still believe this to be very much the case. Syed is only worthy of being his son, so long as Masood remains supremacy. It’s all about control and Syed adhering to Masoods family politics. It’s not so much that Syed’s deviating from whats expected but that he’s deviating from his father. I mean it’s nothing personal. We know that but for Masood, for everytime Syed does something doesn’t toe his party line, it’s another reason to beat him with a stick. Syed failed. He’s let him down again. Masood puts him on this pedestal but he also expects him to fall. I think a part of him wants Syed too, just so he could be there, point the finger and say “See, I told you, you have made a mistake, you have let us down – thanks for confirming what I already know about you, but what your mother fails to see”. This has always been crux of it, not Zainab or his own prejudices. Syed defies him that kills Masood.

These posts are exactly the reason why I want a four hander with some deep father and son discussion about their relationship. These issues exist but they’re hardly spoken of. We need to see it all bought to the forefront.”

I don't think he does view him as that, anymore than he views himself as weak and a failure, taking it out on Syed... Zainab said that Syed was always smarter than Mas.

If anything they are too alike, Mas with his gambling, Syed with his failed investments.

That Mas is losing control of his family and Zainab is a big deal for him, he has been an oppressed husband for a long time and is lashing out and seeking to blame others for breaking apart the family.

I also think Masood is jealous of Syed's bond with Zainab.

The rest I agree with.

Super post!

We need that four hander if only to shine some light on Masood and Masood/Syed, and get rid of some of the myths surrounding him and the 'unique' issues of Zainab. As you say, it's barely been covered compared to Zainab. Masood's head - it's a scary, dark place

Hi .

Thanks to you both . I'd really like them to know we like it and value the equality, as well as the important 'appreciation' we've sent via the BBC.

I'm the same as MadWorld though, I wrote too recently (after ABRC) so I don't think I can write again so soon

Would anyone be willing to send a quick card, very kindly?

Just watched the EE omnibus....OMG Yusef is such a baddy :eek

Watched the bed scene with my mum's friend (my landlady)...had the biggest smile on my face but had to squee internally because I didn't want her to think that I'm a total nut job.

Off again!
You could say that the Chryed story was a catalyst for the whole Masood mess that we see today.Except that, something has to be faulty for such difficulties to be terminal.
It has taken something like Syed,s defection of the family unit to bring into focus the underlying cracks in the Masood marriage.
Zainab is a truly damaged person-physically and mentally. Her history, personally, has made her unstable and untrusting. Her experience in early life-sent away from her family to a marriage to a stranger which ended in tragedy, has made her needy and eternally wanting confirmation of her value,as a person and as a mother. For such a person, the devaluing of importance in her children,s life is too much to bear. Her first born, the love of her life has said--"you are not enough, someone else is more important to me"--it,s a bodyblow to her which she cannot accept.Added to which, community pressure and shame at her son,s "condition"
throw her very existance into question.28yrs gone--and for what?
Masood,a strong Muslim patriarch, thwarted by western values despite trying to conform to a community and faith which objects to the individuality of his children,s opinions. His eldest son engages in a lifestyle which Masood prefers to ignore, and as a result he is estranged from him.
You do have to ask--WHAT exactly do the Masoods have against Chryed as a couple? Is it the the sexual aspect, the defiance of parental wishes, the realisation of loss of future grandchildren, the community condemnation or just the worldwide question of "parental failure",which seems to be the first question--"where did I go wrong"?
For a couple coping with such a conundrum--there is no easy answer. It seems, until acceptance can be attained, and thier children,s happiness becomes paramount, there will always be conflict, precious time will be lost and everyone will be miserable. It really isn,t worth it--life is much too short.

Hello everyone arriving, interesting discussions .

Yusef is so evvilllll

What Ace said in the 'This Morning' interview struck me....that Yusef is like a chess player, seeing all the moves, prepared to sacrifice 'a piece' to reach his ends =

/Stay away from Syed Yusef! (not going to happen). After seeing with his own eyes Chryed's anguish at ABRC, I'll swing for him if the really goes after them! (ish ).

Interesting.

Personally I think Johnny will bow out the show next year. Just a feeling.

Apparently EE might relocate to Salford I'm confused... why would they when most of the actors live in the South?

I've such a horrible feeling that one or both of them is going to leave soon I know it will happen one day...I just don't want it to happen for at least a few more years There's still so many storylines they could have, so many issues to explore...and I'll be ever so devastated when they go...not just because they won't be on screen but because I'll miss this thread so much ....../sorry for being so down

For a while I've had an uneasy feeling that he might leave before he does the panto If/when he does leave I suppose it could be seen as a positive because I'll get my life back but I don't want my life back, dammit

Here And then the thing about him getting twitter when he leaves was something he told a fan, who posted on the FB page
