maybe they just like to cover all bases and as they saw he could be a potential winner, they didn't want him in the overs, just in a case - cos overs aren't allowed to win (especially if mentored by Louis - cos that's the joke category)

I love the debate that has been going on its interesting to see what others feel concerning the pre-audition info. I personally don't care as long as the person that gets through is someone I can support and someone showcasing themselves brilliant idea and its obviously worked as there are those in the industry who want to work with Matt. I am quite happy with all that has happened and I know he is what I thought he was all along a fantastic singer and songwriter. This by the way is my opionon and I don't wish others to feel they have to agree with me. I have sunstroke at the moment with all the walking and exposure to the sun I have had so this might not make much sense.

If you think about it the age category the 'boys' was done I think to make him appeal to a younger set of fans too....obviously as you say it would benefit Matt ..........Aiden was seen we are told as the Pop Star, or so SC would have us believe..........why did Aiden go when he did its because people were not voting for him they were voting for Matt but why? Is it that the GBP were more interested in Matt's voice and thats what drew the audiences in each week.........people all over were talking about his voice. Even the crew and actors from Harry Potter were voting for Matt!!
I don't think they wanted 1D or Rebecca to win to be honest and this was a rouse all the way through the programme. Who was the person who gained most publicity? Matt they were selling him to us.............we don't know if that is the true Matt or not all we know basically is that he has a fantastic voice, Ali as a friend and is a great songwriter. I know no more than that.

just a note re twitter confusion. I've just read the rules and I think this is how it works
Matt will not see tweets in his timeline whether you are protected or not unless he follows you but he will see them in his @mentions. So if you @mention him it will get through whether protected or not BUT it won't show up in any search by a third party - so Matt will see it but no-one else will but only if he looks at his @mentions (which I bet he never does!!)
If he sends a tweet out and you reply to it, it will turn up in his timeline but only if you are unprotected. If you are protected it just goes into his @mentions.
So if you want him to see your tweet, your only realistic chance is to reply to one of his tweets and be unprotected - otherwise you are dependent on him looking at his @mentions.

no, I don't think an @reply appears in his timeline - only in his @mentions (that's what happens with my account), and from what I posted the other day, he cannot see any of your tweets if your account is protected
The twitter thing is very confusing, but I'm glad I'm out there as an unprotected cardie rather than a protected real person because my son has just set up a twitter account!
So he can't find me and pester me about anything!

I think they treated Matt as he deserved until First Time, where it was clear to everybody (if it wasn't already clear) that he was walking it. At that point the show itself was in danger of becoming a procession, which was not good for a show which was meant to be a competition. Hence the leaked negative press stories seemed to start escalating. I bet SC could not believe his luck when Matt got ill, because his brand suddenly got interesting again. It became a contest. I will NEVER EVER forgive Simon for putting the boot in on Matt when he sang AAW, the utter git

As Dannii said Matt is not what one would call a popstar type infact anti- popstar almost, she said this in Australia after the JH auditions.
. I too felt strong emotions when SC AAW ................I'm interested because we are discussing XF again ..........OK I know this years auditions have just started so maybe thats why they are putting forward these articles for PR purposes who knows.

Just popping in from lurkdom. I believe that Simon Cowell has a pretty good idea of many of the contestants before the auditions. There is so much film taken of them, including Matt. I know Matt said they did the brief interview after his audition because Simon liked him but that doesn't explain all the audition stuff before hand. Simon may not have a winner at that point but his researchers will have a looked at the contestants jobs, musical background and even sexual preferences. I believe Simon has "special" contestants and I genuinely believe Matt was one of them. That satisfied smile SImon gives on Matts first performance shows someone delighted with his new find. Nothing is left to chance on X Factor SC is too much of a control freak.

Mita….I agree: we only “know” what we’re permitted to know. The angle about the XF needing a credible winner this year has been done to death, but I do think that they did and that that is what we got sold - we only know Matt was “taking on the machine” because the producers told us that that is what he was doing: they could have cut the VT any old way….but the producers took an editing decision to accentuate Matt’s “alternative” side - eg it wasn’t until pretty late on in proceedings that we became aware of Matt’s love of pap pop…..but we sure knew he loved Pearl Jam and Rage against the Machine etc pretty early on ….oh yeah, and I KNOW, just in case I hadn’t got the message, that he was the “anti-popstar” because one of the show’s mouthpieces told me that that is what he was….
…the show is sodden with manipulation/PR and it would be kind of far fetched to think that the contestants were unaware of what was going on/what is going on….like they exist in some kind of vacuum…or that they didn’t give their explicit/tacit approval to go with the flow as part and parcel of signing up. That goes for Matt too. I’m not saying he is fake - just that certain aspects of Matt‘s personality were accentuated whilst other facets played down. Though, having said that, I do believe that absolutely everybody: presenters, contestants, judges, guests etc.. appearing on the show/spinoffs etc are singing from the same hymn sheet - no one is immune from having to tow the “party line” as it were…so even when I hear stuff from the “horse’s mouth” ….I take it with a pinch of salt. It’s just the way it is.
I’ve said before, only my opinion, but I think Matt was the preferred winner - pimped to win from the off. Syco would not have been too upset if any of the “chosen few” had won (evidenced by their post-show contracts) should a last minute glitch in the PR machine fail to deliver “the one“. I don’t think the show leaves anything to chance.
It’s a shame we’ll never find out the full extent of the manipulation….but I kind of think that the blatant stuff we see on our TV screens week in/week out and the ensuing tabloid stories are just the tip of the iceberg…the research and planning for each series begins well in advance of the televised auditions. (Who knows if that article was really written by a “sony exec”?…but there were things in there that I thought resonated with Matt’s “journey” somewhat…)

The stories all basically bigged up his “rock & roll credentials” - bad boy, womanising, sex addict, dalliances with drugs etc…also, we felt he was being picked on, which only served to create indignation on the part of his fans. At the time it felt like Matt was being sabotaged from the inside: the press stories, the lack of air time once the lives started….it looked like Matt wasn’t getting a fair crack of the whip….the underdog…and the illness thing really sealed the deal on that score when SC did Matt a big favour putting the boot in….all played to maximise the sympathy vote. As I recall, Mary was ill too but she had no VT to garner sympathy etc - we only found out in a “casual” way on the show….
Anyway, just musing…and rambling…

I agree with that lennonlove. I did catch him looking smug when Matt did well, he also gave him a couple of caustic comments nearer the end though. Matt was probably one of a few favourites.
I can't believe at this stage on BGT they actually choose the songs for the contestants! I am shocked! I don't know why where Simon had anything to do with it but I thought on this show the contestants came with their own ideas as oppososed to doing what they are told like XF!

It's kind of depressing to think of everything being twisted the way "they" want it. But it really would not surprise me if any of what you said is true. Sadly.
I'm clutching on to the fact that at the end of the day, a bit like the election, the people get the vote. And Matt connected with the public, he was the best singer, and that's why he won.

I think in a way you and Mattadore are both right. Yes SC would have had his "special contestants",but ultimately the public have to like them. Matt scored on both counts. The final factor needed was the artist themselves. They had to want it and fight for it and that is what Matt did and Rebecca failed to do. I always felt Rebecca didn't want it enough. I thought she look relieved at the end. When you think about how everything was going for Matt there was no other possible winner (and I'm not saying that in a creepy fangirly way). I think that these factors will continue to help Matt. I feel SC has tried his best to give everything Matt needs to make a success out of his music.
Just nipping in to say great post Matty - I very much agree - and I also agree with Mita, Lennonlove, Cardie, Tilly - just about everyone! I love it when I agree
