I thought it was unprofessional and really showed them up. It was awkward, not funny.

(Though I do kind of love the fly because anything that annoys Cowell is always a bonus!)

They paid more attention to the fly than the poor girl who was on live tv for the first time in front of 10 million people and nervously waiting for their verdict.

The fly was the twist! To mask the awfulness of the acts the fly was drafted in to perform a quirky flying routine and enchant the judges. What you couldn't see was the sparkly costume the fly decided to wear against the explicit wishes of the producers, which will go against the fly in the end.
