Even though, as according to their FAQ, it can't tell you when a message has been read.

Blackberry announced ages ago that they intend to bring BBM to Android and iOS.

I agree with what others have said about WhatsApp. It's a very elegant solution for cross-platform messaging. I have unlimited texts but use it a lot for pictures. And for chatting to my friends without unlimited texts!!

One problem with BBM, is the occasional lack of sending/ receiving messages which isnt related to signal!
You an have signal and GPRS or 3g and it wont be sent for ages. Its more to do with RIM than anything network related as it affects most people!

Been using it for a few years now and never had such a problem.

Ease of use, message read confirmation, by far the most important things.

AFAIK WhatsApp does show if the message has been read and even shows you when the other party is typing and the last time they checked their messages. Although it doesn't use a PIN like BBM it seems dead simple to use. Plus the added advantage of being cross platform. My son uses BBM to chat to his mates, but has also installed Whatsapp on his Blackberry so that he can keep in touch with the rest of the family, none of whom have BBs. Would be far easier if we all could use something for IMs which works on any phone.

Whatsapp does not show if a message has been read.

Who cares about that? If pepoe want to get back to you they will, don't sit there expecting a reply because they have received your message. Some people are way too needy.

Fair enough. But It does show the message has been delivered though. Surely that's enough? http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/#g4

I was asked what is better about BBM, which was answered, I don't see how having less info could be classed as better, once you have something that is better everything else feels like a step back.

My brother actually wants to buy a blackberry just for bbm, yet he doesn't actually know anyone that has a BB. A lot of people are going for blackberry for the bbm service, if it goes multiplatform, it will only be bad for RIM.

If WhatsApp does have some kind of delivery notification then fair enough... But you can't be 100% certain they've received the message.

Wait I'm sure it does, you see two ticks when you send a message right? Meaning it has been read? Also, instead of having to remember a pin number, whatsapp simply searches through your contacts list to see if anyone else has it installed and adds them to your friends list, which I think is much easier

Yes it does.

It shows 1 tick when the message has been sent and a second tick once its been received/read.

Anyway, why does anyone need to be sad enough to sit there and wait to see if a message has been read? Surely you will know it was read when they reply!

Never understood that or the need for delivery reports.

Whatsapp does show that the message has been delivered to the destination device. Apparently it doesn't show that it has been actually read (or understood by the recipient )

On my phone the message pops up on the screen instantly - granted I may not be near the phone at the time but I will see it when I pick up the phone next.

Incorrect, 1 tick for sent, 2 ticks only means its been delivered to device, it doesn't tell you its been read.

Some people don't want a service with read reports, otherwise they can't use that line "sorry, I didn't get your text"

Weeeeell, if its been received by the device then its obviously been read surely? I mean a box pops up when a message is received so its not like they are going to miss it are they?

Anyway, why is this so important? I still don't get why someone who isnt desperate or paranoid needs to know when a message has been read! When the person responds, that's when you know lol

how the hell do you come up with that one ? Their phone could be in the car, in a different room etc etc.

It makes perfect sense.

If the phone was in another room/car you wont get confirmation of sent message till they read it anyway to which they would most likely reply to it right away.

If without confirmation of sent message, you will know they get it the same way, when they reply.

Like i say, i cant see the need to know unless your stupidly paranoid they might be ignoring you.
