Best ever cliffhangers?
Andy Joannou
03-06-2011
I saw this article on the homepage and while I agree with some of them, I was surprised there was no mention of the great cliffhanger in 'Silence of the Library'.

Slightly less traumatic, I was left wondering what would happen to poor Wilf in 'The Poison Sky' too.

Do you agree with the options chosen or do you have other cliffhangers in mind?

Hard to disagree with those choices as they were pretty much THE main cliffhangers in the last 6 years, although the return of Bad Wolf in series 4 should be in there as well imo.

For me Utopia gets it every time, the final 20 mins was one big perfectly executed cliffhanger, perfect Doctor Who, all of it. Nothing comes close to it before or after imo. Even the fob watch reveal, no need for series long hints and arcs, no forced mentions, it made an appearance in one story before that and yet it's reappearance in Utopia was the greatest moment.

Hopefully that will all change Saturday. I'm really hoping Moffat pulls it out of the bag, I've a feeling he will as well despite my reservations of late.

I think the End Of Time pt1 clinches it for me. I had no idea that the timelords were returning and even during the episode I hadnt suspected a thing.

From 'classic' Who, the end of Terror of the Zygons part 3.

The Doctor being chased across the moors by the Loch Ness Monster.

He falls. It's homing beacon sticks to his hand.

The monster bears down upon him....Weeeeeeeeeoooooooooooooo

I love the Series 1 finale but the one thing that lets it down was the actual cliffhanger, thought it was very poor. aside from Rose being in immediate danger, it didn't really pose any major excitement but otherwise as they said, two cracking good episodes.

My two personal favourites from the New series are Army Of ghosts. Though I had heard about the Daleks battling the Cybermen somewhere(not here!), it was still a great moment of excitement that they suddenly turned. Turn left is another one because of the last five minutes and subsequent exciting trailer and Stolen Earth is up there as well because of it's triple cliffhanger. Agree about Utopia as well. As with the Daleks, I'd heard a whisper The Master was returning but hadn't an inkling it was him in utopia. Was a brilliant last few minutes of the episode.

Classic Who. Any with a Davros rant like GOTD or Res.OTD were good ones. The baffling ones like Sarah falling to her death at the end of part two of GOTD or The Doctor doing likewise at the end of Part Three of The Pirate Planet were good as well.

Most exciting one though was Doc 5 crashing at the end of P3 of Androzania and Peri being leered into a cliffhanger at the end of P2 of The Two Doctors!

The Pandorica Opens is by far the best cliffhanger IMO can't get more epic than the actual end of the universe

For me THE classic cliffhanger came in The Sea Devils. The Doctor and Jo trapped between a mine field and the Sea Devils emerging from the waves.

One of the worst is Death (or is it Day?) Of the Daleks. Pertwee Era.
3rd Doc and an alien friend are going through a castle/citadel on a lifeless planet, with the Daleks behind them.
They turn a corner and the Doctor pulls his alien friend back.
"Stop!" he shouts. "Look!" a pause.. and in a frightened voice the doctor says "A tiled floor!"
The camera pans down on a lovely mosiac floor.... Cue the music!

Oh noes! The people who built this citadel were rubbish at floor tiling!

(In the defence of this, I do realise that episode 4 was due to over run, and nothing could be cut from it, so they cut episode 3 meaning the cliffhanger was shown and resolved in episode 3 and so the tiled floor wasn't the scripted cliffhanger.)

That would be Death!

The Pandorica Opens was by far my favourite. Wasn't just a good cliffhanger, but a beautiful (of sorts) end to the episode. For me, it could have been the end of the show: Amy dead, River trapped in the exploding TARDIS, the Doctor sealed in the Pandorica as the existence of the universe was fading into black.

I know some people dislike The Big Bang for the paradoxes, but for me, the best thing about the episode, is that about 40 minutes worth of it is trying to resolve the cliffhanger from the previous episode (closing the cracks created by the exploding TARDIS). Compare that to say, The Stolen Earth which is resolved post titles within about 5 seconds...a lot less satisfying if you ask me!

The End of time part 1 for sure the time lord's returning that was the best thing that has ever happened in new who. It beat's utopia,Doomsday,The pandorica open's and Tennant's fake regeneration every time.

Same here, brilliant cliff-hanger, only last Sats comes close, but the return of the Time Lords led by James Bond is unbeatable!!

Stolen Earth beats it. Even if the resolution was cheap. What a story it would have been in 10 passed onto 11 right there. We still could have had the 10.5 resolution which would have led to more credence for Rose staying in Pete's world with 10.

Still you can't have everything.

Even so it was worth it for that week of sheer obsession and anticipation wondering just how it was going to come out. Genius.

As a kiddie, I was most shocked at end of episode one of 'The Mind Robber' when the Tardis blew up in space
Never been done before!
In the latest series, one of my favourites was end of 'The Empty Child' - all those gas-mask people approaching everyone saying "Are you my mummy?". The only disappointing thing about that was in Part Two, they resolved it BEFORE the opening credits!!

Ah, but "Thank goodness that worked, those would have been rubbish last words" (or words to that effect) is one of the greatest DW lines ever!

The Pandorica Opens - mainly because it led nicely into the greatest WTF?! moment of Dr Who - the teaser for The Big Bang with Amy in the Pandorica.

Utopia - I have often rewatched the last 10 mins of this episode on YouTube. To be honest, as great as everything else is, the music makes it for me.

The Stolen Earth - Agree with this one. Luckily I didn't have to wait the week to watch Journey's End as I watched them both together after a holiday. Great tv.

My favourite has always been City of Death episode 2. What is Scaroth doing in Florence in the 16th Century and how does he know who the Doctor is.... When i watched that for the first time i screamed "WHAT????"

Just put this in the Facebook comments under the article, but no-one reads them so I'm going to paste it into this thread so it can be ignored in two places instead of one!

Another vote for Army of Ghosts here, I had no idea the Daleks were in that sphere.
That alone would be exciting enough but with the Cybermen already around that added an extra level of awesome thinking about the potential meeting of the two races....

For the original series, I thought the end of Colony in Space was quite shocking.
"oh look, the Master is behind it all, how predicti...WHAAA, Master working for the Daleks How did that happen?"
Particularly as I viewed it on UK Gold during their "no Dalek" phase.

My favorite new series cliffhangers would be Utopia (the best no question) followed by The Empty Child (most effective cliffhanger resoultion), The Stolen Earth, The Almost People and The Pandorica Opens.

No offence to you Muttley, or indeed anyone else who has posted this, but I don't think how well the cliffhanger was resolved should be entering into the argument here.

It's merely all about how shocked/amazed you were when the cliffhanger originally happened and how deeply that moment affected you, to heck with what happened in the next ep

well i like the cliffhanger in the empty child a lot in it's own right, i was mentioning the resolution as a separate point entirely, frankly. If i was factoring resolutions in to it, there is no chance the stolen earth would be on my list, as that had a very poor resolution, as indeed was the resolution to the Utopia cliffhanger.
