Does the BT receiver belong to the customer or is only loaned to you for as long as you stay with BT? The reason I ask is that in the instruction book it tells you how to get it repaired. I thought it was similar to Virgin where you never own it.

It is yours once you have passed the initial contract period. If it should break, normally BT would replace it.

When my contract ended, I was sent a postage paid bag for the box's return. I sent it back as it's of little use without BT BB. Come to think of it, it was of little use even when I had BT BB.

When I left BT, they didn't ask for any of the equipment back.

So I removed the hard disk which I sold on ebay, and sent the rest to the local recycling centre.

Pity BT don't allow the box to be used a simple freeview receiver once you decide to leave BT, then there probably wouldn't be as many for sale (and not selling) on ebay or going to recycling centres.

I had some big arguments with BT after I started subscribing to this service.

Basically, their sales rep told me it would receive & record freeview HD broadcasts. It only took me a few minutes to find out that it would not. After some long and frustrating phone calls (to India - where else ) I was contacted from a UK based "resolutions" team. They agreed that the box does not receive freeview HD and as a result, I now only pay for phone and broadband internet.

When the contract is up, it can go to the recycling centre if BT don't ask for it back.

It's always a case of buyer beware with stuff like this. I don't call anyone when buying gadgets etc but I do my own research first, on the internet etc. Anyone can tell you any kind of guff over the phone - especially if they're on commission.

That's why I specifically asked them if it would receive and record HD from freeview. When I found out it wouldn't I logged a complaint and BT said they would listen to a recording of the sales call. They phoned back a few days later to admit that they couldn't trace it and I was told I could keep the box and just pay for phone and internet. The deal they gave me isn't bad and my exchange is due to upgrade to 20mbit later this year.

The BT vision box also does strange things to my LCD set when using the HDMI connection, so I have to use Scart.

I have ended up with two boxes. I originally took out Vision in 2008. When I took out Infinity in October 2010, on a bundle package, they sent me a new box.

I am now just waiting for BT Vision to enable multiroom!

On paper the BTVision box does support recording & playback of HD via the DVB standard. Unfortunately the UK adopted the DVB2 standard which is not compatible. Doesnt help you though.

spot on, does it via MPEG4 over DVB. when Ireland where doing their DTT tests, many were able to tap in using vision boxes. since the vision box could decode the MPEG4 streams.

The vision box is very clever, just a real shame that half the OS goodies are disabled by BT. PiP, remote streaming, remote record, alternate layouts, extra settings all but to name a few.

PiP - Penny's dropped now but for a moment, I thought we were talking CP/M after all these years.
