I know it's a talent but there's nothing remarkable about it

name one singer from before the 20th century? you can't and if you can it's probably some obscure name that nobody has heard of
but you can name composers like Mozart and Beethoven

singing has absolutely NOTHING on composing when it comes to what requires more skill

Absolutely. Paul Gbegbaje was the most talented tonight. And he went against Simon.

Yes we always do seem to end up with a majority of child singers in the final.

If Stephen Hall and the other guy who sang nursery rhymes was in it would have been better.

I feel it should be a variety act you put in front of the Queen - not another singer.

Well.... er....it's an entertainment show & singing will always be a major part of entertainment.
There werent many popular singers in the 19th Century because that was not the main source of entertainment until Music Halls & cylindrical discs etc. were in everyday use.
Of course composing is a skill & a talent. So are many other skills & talents, but we wouldn't want to watch 3minutes of someone doing carpentry or speaking in 6 different languages.
To sing well IS a talent & to hear someone use their voice to put across a song can evoke emotions just as well as a gorgeous piece of classical music.

there were classical singers before the 20th cnetury but none of them have the place in history that composers have because before the modern popular culture, people valued the true genius of composers and not the lesser (much lesser) skill of singing

Personally (and this is coming from somebody who loves to sing), I find that singers have been put on a pedestal far above any other type of talent.

Maybe it's because you're focussing on one person, that the person is centre stage and that their form of music is the most easiest for the unmusically trained to grasp (I'm not trying to be condescending there) and other musical talents are less noticed by the 'general public'.

Mind you, I think the popular status of the singer in the past 40 or so years has been due to the fact that it is also the musical talent that lots of people tend to go for first. To be a singer you don't necessarily have to be able to read music.

Unfortunately that's just a fact of the state of our music industry today. You listen to a lot of modern tracks and the focus is put on the singer and often you have a very basic repeated backtrack. Sometimes you are lucky enough to get a backtrack that was recorded by real musicians in a real studio. Sometimes the singer is even so mediocre that they have to be autotuned and have to mime their 'live performances'. The person's stage presence, appeal and physical appearance is much more important than their actual singing ability.

Anyway, that's just how I see it. My faves to win were the Circus of Horrors, but I don't think they are even in the final. I'd like to see a non-singer win, I quite liked that pianist, and also the very flexible dancer.
