I.E. The Tardis? Here's the reason why I think she could be Amy, Rory and The Tardis' baby...

River was presumably conceived on the Tardis and has special powers because of that fact. Maybe more leeched into her than just an extra strand of DNA. Perhaps part of the Tardis' personality influenced her as well.

This is partly based on the fact that they decided to turn the Tardis into a character rather than just a prop/mode of transport in 'The Doctor's Wife'. Once they turned her into a character, it makes her easier to think of in terms of contributing some kind of personality traits to a child.

River is obviously romantically involved with the Doctor, also there was an attraction between the Tardis and the Doctor. The episode where the Tardis appears was called 'The Doctor's Wife' - because there is a strong connection between the Doctor and the Tardis. But, we also suspect that River could be the Doctor's wife as well - does this episode hint at that?

The Tardis told the Doctor the hint that linked River Song and Melody - 'The only water in the forest is the river'. This was the clue that transformed the writing on the baby cloth from the forest language 'Melody Pond' into 'River Song'. But the Doctor and the Tardis weren't there when that happened, but River was. Some kind of memory sharing between the Tardis and River?

Both of the characters had a flirty, bossy and adventurous personality - although this could just be because most of the primary female characters and companions in this era have been the same way!

Finally, River has always had a special knack for flying the Tardis in a way that the Doctor can't. She seems to know things intuitively about the Tardis and she told the Doctor things about the noises the Doctor made that he didn't know. If we think that she's getting a lot of her information about time travelling from the Doctor (and there's not a lot of other people she can learn this from unless the Time Lords come back), where did she learn this from? Does she still have a link to the old girl?

I don't really know how the two are linked, or if they are, but I think it's interesting that they decided to have a Tardis episode right before Amy had a baby and it was revealed to be River. Also, that on reflection,there are so many parallels and links between the two characters.

What do you think - and are there any links I've forgotten?

i think you're right - she is a child of the tardis as much as a human child

however the phrase about the only water in the forest etc, is more to do with the tardis being able to see the whole of time, she doesn't experience linear time, she is in all times all the time, so therefore she gets bits and pieces of the future bleeding through now and again, like when she said about the smell after the rain

her link with the tardis definitely explains her better tardis flying skills

The Doctors Wife Episode was meant to be last series but was posponed due to budget issues so it wasn't meant to be this close to the River reveal.

Still you may well be right that there is strong connection between River and the TARDIS with her having been conceived in there.

That's interesting - I didn't know that episode had been postponed, but still, it doesn't rule out a connection, especially considering River was introduced so long ago.

Cars aren't usually sentient. The TARDIS is.

Believe it or not, there was a short story where the TARDIS and Kamelion had a baby together!

RTD didn't pen that crap did he.

But there was obviously some sort of re-write for the episode as that is where we were told "The only water in the forest is the river" so it may have been intentional for it to be in this season to give it a closer link to the arc.

Idris was at least a teasing metaphor for River in my opinion.

- Her first words were ‘Goodbye’ her first, ‘Hello’
- Idris archived desktops that haven’t happened yet as River archives events in her diary.
- Perhaps even her name comes from I.D. Ri. S.


Idris’s dialogue may hold clues to Melody/River’s sickness as a child.

“I’m, I’m ...big word, sad word. Why is that word so sad ?
No will be sad, will be sad. “

and later...

“I’ve been looking for a word, a big complicated word.
One so sad. I’ve found it now....ALIVE. I’M ALIVE."

Why is finding out young River is alive going to be sad ?

Hmm, yes - all that fits!

But then I just realised that in the ep, young Melody cried from the noises that the Tardis was making. So I guess the implication is that the baby is confused by the noises and doesn't like them, which could be evidence against the theory they are linked.

BUT

Because I like the theory so much, I've decided this is actually proof for my theory!

Baby River/Melody only speaks 'baby' - as evidenced by the Doctor stating such in the episode. But, as she has a connection with the Tardis, she understands that the noises are communication/signals from the Tardis, and is crying because she can't understand them. Or, she's crying because these sounds used to be a part of her, but now they're coming from the outside - she knows something's been taken away or separated from her.



Yes, a bit weird I guess! What do you think of the baby crying from the Tardis nosies? Is that significant in any way or was it just to get the baby out of the Tardis so they could have the big showdown?

Wasn't she just saying that being alive was great, but the fact that she would have to eventually say it as past tense would be sad?

I guess that taken individually, none of the elements of the theory is particularly strong, but all together it sounds slightly plausible!
