I took it as it's all been done and dusted, because at the beginning River said that she couldn't see him him until after/it's all over (I forget exactly what she said but I'm sure that's the gist).

He just did lose. People died so that he could save Melody, but he didn't save her. In fact, since he'd already met River, the adult Melody, it was a fixed point in time and he didn't realise it.
