Edna... again.
I've been watching this series since the beginning but the missus only started got interested after watching last weeks episode so we dug out all the previous shows on iPlayer and watched them all yesterday.
Funny thing is, after coming across as a truly nasty piece of work in the first two shows I realised that Edna (after appearing as a rather forceful personality in the first couple of episodes) has done absolutely nothing really note-worthy in any of the subsequent shows. In fact, in the last couple of shows she's barely even appeared on camera or spoken a line at all. I'm not the sort of person who takes TA at face value. I'm sure it's all rather contrived and organised to provide good TV rather than an objective record of the process so I can't help wondering what they've got in store for Edna in the future? Surely they're not going to waste somebody who's obviously got so much potential to be an anti-hero? I predict at least one show where she manages to thoroughly shaft some poor unsuspecting sap followed by a huge meltdown and leading to her eventual sacking in disgrace. |

Whether you like her or not it was very clear in the first couple of tasks the Edna was a very forceful personality. Whilst it's possible to believe that a forceful character can be edited out it's much harder to give credence to the notion that a non forceful personality has somehow been edited to make them appear forceful. Thus it seems fairly obvious that Edna is being given a very low key edit at the moment whereas with Helen, we don't know if it's editing or she's just generally very quiet. When someone doesn't show on the edit it's also hard to know whether it's because they're not doing much or just doing what has been asked of them quietly and efficiently without making any amusing cockups. |

Whilst I'm not disputing the fact that people can be edited to appear a certain way, you can't create something from nothing.

Well it's hard to take anything for face value with regards to the Apprentice. There is so much footage, and maybe Edna in the last two or three tasks has provided really good ideas and pulled her weight, but maybe the editing team just didn't show this.

I always start from the premise that ALL reality shows are edited for entertainment value only.
Of course, the editors can't create something that's not there, but they can edit out any personality traits which don't 'match-the-mould' so to speak. I think there's plenty of Edna on the cutting room floor. ![]() I'm loving this series as the others I have watched. My favourite parts are when they show the introductory flag waving and ego-filled sections, just when they have shot themselves in the foot. Vincent must have had feet like colanders by the time he left!!

I cant stand Edna, but i agree that clever editing can mean the producers can make you appear however they want. I think television is so manipulative that they can also use this to control who wins in reality tv voting shows too!

Edna is very much a product of this generation, the get an education but just don't really do much apart from talking a lot psyco babble type management stuff that doesn't really mean anything.
Our office is full of them

You take an innocent remark out of its context and edit it in such a way that it takes on a different meaning. It can make everyone look nasty, silly, clever etc. |

Remember Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe masterpiece on reality show editing?
Some time ago, but just as relevant now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBwepkVurCI |

The scary thing is someone like her probably makes a very good living for essentially doing and knowing nothing.

Exactly. You can edit out, but not in. |

Well they all get sacked 'in disgrace' but I look forward to your peculiar brand of bloodlust not being satiated. FWIW, I'm not a rabid fan of TA and I don't have any "favourites".It just seemed odd the way Edna seemed to come across as "the bossy one" in the first couple of episodes and then vanished almost completely. Some of the others (particularly a couple of the women) seem to be just as bad but they seem to get cast in the same role for every episode. Even tonight, I was just getting ready to post how, again, she'd been almost completely absent in tonights show except for answering the phone-call at the start. I was really surprised at the result. I was expecting much more controversy before Edna went. |
