The problem with *some* fans

Just to make clear this is not targetting all fans.

Some people are complaining about the whole River reveal was way too obvious for Steven Moffat but it wouldnt be obvious if they didnt pick apart every little damned thing.

But then when The Moff reveals something less obvious (I mean I had no idea that River was any part of timelord.) people complain that he is messing about and he is lying.

*Face Palm*

He cant win.

It was obvious yes, BUT there is still so much more to come. Lets see how it plays out in it's entirety.

The part time lord thing was clever though, didn't expect that. Shagging in the Tardis, I mean who wouldn't.

I am seriously considering a break from the forums. Just to give me a break from Doctor Who. I have been so obsessed recently I am not liking it.

It's the wild mass guessing that depresses me - you can read some absolutely ridiculous theories and ideas that people have decided are absolutely 100% correct...

Which then turn out be be about as correct as that prediction that the world was ending on 21 June.

At least we have found out who River Song is. That is the only thing that matters after all

I mentioned in a thread on Saturday that a better cliffhanger would have been if River Song had just been about to reveal her identity then roll titles, keeping everyone hanging on.

However, considering how crazy this forum has been over the weekend I'm really glad that didn't happen.

You're not the one starting all the arguments though

I've stayed away from here and Gallifrey Base almost completely during the series - and didn't even buy the Radio Times! - and it enhanced my enjoyment of the series no end. Everything about each episode has been a complete surprise, even down to whether Rory would be a full-time companion or not.

The reaction of some Who fans has reminded me of when you find out whether your baby is a boy or a girl - however chuffed you are with the outcome, a whole other life that you'd imagined disappears. I'd rather just watch the program and enjoy it for what it is, rather than being disappointed by what it isn't.

It wasn't obvious to me who she was at all.

I've avoided all forums and fansites because I've been busy and can't be arsed.... so to me the reveal was really edge-of-the-seat stuff.... and it would have been to most casual viewers i.e. the majority of the audience.

Indeed, if there were no clues then people would have cried foul and screamed about "PLOT HOLES!!".

But when those clues and hints are picked up by the thousands of fans who look for such things it's suddenly "Too easy" and "What a letdown".

Also I think most of the complainers are just trolling

I think i'm going to stay away for the second part of the series too.

I've really enjoyed discussing and debating the episodes with fellow fans, the majority of whom are smart, sensible, fair people.

However, the few the OP refers to spoil the process far too much for me. I think it much rather just enjoy the brilliance of this series without all the debate and drama

Hear Hear.
To me the Doctor is all about mystery. Some fans pic it apart way to much. It spoils the enjoyment way to much.

Writers for Doctor Who can't ever win. When they resolve a plot by using elements that haven't clearly been introduced in earlier episodes, they're "making it up as they go along". If they do only rely on what has gone before, they're either "lazy" or "we worked it out ages ago".

And that's not including the third category - those elements that are introduced in earlier episodes, but play no part in the resolution, which are generally the sources of the wild and wacky theories.

ild say most people who dont spend their time speculating on internet forums, didnt see the reveal coming.

and even when i was watching it, it was still 50/50 as to whether she was either amys baby or the doctors mum.

my only gripe with the whole thing is that they should have broken the series on the amy ganger cliffhanger

i think that would have been more effective in building up anticipation for the return in september

Why do people keep saying it was obvious??? I had no idea at all that she was their daughter!!

I agree with this. Not that it isn't endless fun discussing and speculating, but I know I'll enjoy Doctor Who without the forums. Maybe after this series has finished.

I would suggest that makes you one of the fortunate ones.

my sister didn't have a clue. so it wasn't obvious to her.

I thought about it being possible a while back. then when Amy got pregnant. I was pretty sure. still didn't think she'd be Amy and Rory's baby.

Amen. I'm surprised no-one has yet come up with Commander Strax is really Rory because Strax said "I'm a nurse" and usually it's Rory who says that.

And sadly that's half realistic compared to some theories.

River being Amy's daughter was only "obvious" to people because Timeboy on Gallifrey Base leaked the spoiler six weeks ago! And from there it spread to DS and other forums. Before that happened the degree of speculation on that idea was virtually zero.

I'm sure some people had thought of it, yes, in the same way some thought Amy and River were the same person, or River was the Doctor's mum, etc. Every single possible idea was suggested, but none was more popular than the others. It only became the dominant theory *after* the spoiler leak.

Yet we now have this hilarious revisionist history claiming that it was obvious all along! I must have missed all those dozens and dozens of threads over the last year which suggested this apparently most "obvious" of ideas...

The best course of action with DW more so than any other TV series is to not populate forums until AFTER the episode has aired, and even then only go in the main episode discussuion thread, have your say and see what other people think, then get the hell out before you get either: A. Spoiled. or B. In an argument about spoilers.
