Is Rory about to become as feared as the Doctor?
Suddenly Psycho
06-06-2011
From The Pandorica Opens:
The Doctor: “There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior. A nameless terrible thing soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. And nobody could reason with it or stop it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and destroy your world”

From Day of the Moon:
Amy: "I love you. I know you think it's him. I know you think it's all to be him. But it's not. It's you. And when I see you again I'm going to tell you properly. Just to see your stupid face. . . my life was just, so boring till you dropped out of the sky. . . so just get your stupid face where I can see it, ok?"

From A Good Man Goes to War:
Amy: "I wish I could tell you that you'll be loved. That you could be safe and loved for and protected. But this isn't a time for lies. What you are going to be, Melody, is very very brave. But not as brave as they'll have to be, because there's someone coming. I don't know where he is, or what he's doing, but trust me, he's on his way. There's a man whose never gonna let us down. And not even an army can get in the way. He's the last of his kind. He looks young but he's lived for hundreds of hundreds of years. And wherever they take you, Melody, however scared you are, I promise you, you will never be alone. Because this man is your father. He has a name but the people of our world know him better. As The Last Centurion."

Pure speculation of course, but could it be possible that Rory is the "terrible thing" the Doc mentions in TPO? He has been getting slightly more bad-ass this season, and it could be argued he was the one going around recruiting the army while the Doctor sat twiddling his thumbs in the TARDIS (or, as already pointed out, doing the dirty work )

Also, Amy sort of christens him as "The Last Centurion" in AGMGTW, so could we be about to see Rory become as feared as the Doctor has become himself? Perhaps he will become so feared amongst the galaxy, that he will become a legend even the Doctor has heard of?

To be fair he wasn't just sitting twiddling his thumbs, he was arranging for an entire Cyberman Legion to blow up on cue

I would love to see people coming to Rory for help, completely ignoring the Doctor.

I thought this was a play on the video that plays in The Big Bang which tells of the Centurions legend, he was called "The Lone Centurion" in that... I think... Possibly...

Might have even be called "The Last" in that :-/

The more I think about it, the less convinced I am LOL

Surely the whole point was that the nameless terrible thing was the Doctor? He'd heard of the Pandorica, knew what it was for, but didn't realise until too late that the warrior they were talking about was him.

Yes, Rory was called the The Last Centurion in the collapsed universe of The Big Bang. That's exactly what Amy is referring to.

I've had some similar thoughts regarding Rory, and my completely unsubstantiated idea is (not sure if this sort of thing requires a spolier, but just in case....)

Spoiler
Perhaps Rory, being in some way Time Lord-ish, did once drop out of the sky destroying worlds but then got to Earth and fell in love with Amy.
The Silence attempted to prevent them marrying and subsequently having a child (silencing Melody/Song) because they knew that in the future the child would be used as a weapon.
The weapon might not be the child itself, but it might be used to try and control the actions of Rory, with him being used as a weapon against the Doctor.
I think the Pandorica also plays a part in Rory's story - I think it was meant for him, or was used to imprison him at some point. The Doctor was expecting something to appear from it when it opened.

Conveniently, I've left out approximately 100 parts of the story so far which don't fit my idea but let's not worry about those!

Just wanted to say I'm glad you included this quotation because I loved that bit but couldn't remember the actual words. Thanks

I found it interesting that in the prequel to this week's episode on the DW website, Dorium says to the headless monks:-

"Oh I know what you're up to, I hear everything in this place. I even hear rumours about whose child you've taken - are you mad?!" Followed by some classic Moff misdirection about the Doctor.

As the baby was never going to have been the Doctor's, I thought then that Rory's reputation/legend must have gone far further than we knew.

Well he's clearly an amazing fighter, maybe he had to protect the pandorica from intruders in his 2000 years? Obviously people must have seen him or there wouldn't be any legend.

I like your interpretation as I think Rory is going to become super-important this series. Based upon the last 4 series, it's been the companions who have tended to do something special to save the Doctor/world/universe: Rose and the time vortex, Martha and spreading his name, the Doctor/Donna (admittedly the Doctor has a big part to play in all of them too!). Last series we had Amy remembering so it's Rory's turn to be the hero - only I think he might have a similar fate to Rose/Martha/Donna and not have a happy ending

I interpreted Dorium's words as 'are you mad, don't you know they travel with the Doctor...' but I reckon you're more spot on.

Maybe he's the good man 'a hero to many' who river is known to have killed... well that's what I think anyway.

i dont understand how he can be the last centurian - "ultimate warrior" when the universe was rebooted :/

of course he may still have memories of being the auton but after the reboot hes back to being plain old rory the nurse.

and as rory the nurse hes as intimidating as postman pat.

Doctor is a word for healer, as is nurse but in the Gamma forests doctor comes to mean warrior but they don't have a word for doctor since the only healer in the forest is nurse

Well Rory and the Doctor only exist because Amy remembered them. Perhaps she didn't remember them exactly as they were, but instead has given us her 'idealised' versions of them. For all we know the version of Rory that Amy brought back into being could actualy be a Time Lord, and it would explain why he can remember being the fake plastic Rory when that version of him technicaly no longer existed after the reboot of the universe.

Maybe the original Doctor is still stuck in the Pandorica and the original Rory is still dead. Must admit I'm not to sure if the current reality is the original universe rebooted or a completely new universe, or perhaps even both universes merged.

If you look at the opening scenes of episode 7 you see somebody running around the cybermen's spaceships with a sonic causing mischief ... if you look very closely you will see a cloak swaying shortly after the "unknown" person plays about with the door ...

Perhaps the Dr had nothing to do with the explosions, it could have been rory running around with the sonic planting the explosives ....

Or maybe in the Gamma Forests (I want to go there - maybe it's time to change my location) the word for Nurse is Lone Centurion. Or vice versa.

Ok I've been thinking and have a weird feeling that Rory somehow may just turn out to be the master.

I'd laugh if that was true, though after looking at some theories it's one of the more likely ones...

I just get this bugging feeling, the last we saw of the master before he became crazy master in the end of time was his body burnt and then the ring taken by a female, then nothing until his appearance with the rest of the time lords bit he needed a stable vessel/body it's been a while so he's out of our memory and Rory was erased from time but came back and what better way for the master to come back than as Rory inside the doctors own group with a body made for him and a chance to destroy the doctor by creating what he hoped would be his best weapon melody/Amy hence also explaining why half time lord when the doctor says it takes billions of years exposed to the vortex not one night.
