3D software on a laptop?
So I can view 3D content is there an application that uses a webcam to create a 3D effect? I am posting it here because I would also like to ask why don't TV's have this?

not sure I understand the OP...but...
you can't (easily/reliably) create 3d video with a single camera/webcam. You can view 3d software (games for example) on a laptop or PC, but this usually means a 3d world is represented rather than you actually see the generated images in 3d. There are means for viewing in 'true' 3d, for example using shutter glasses, and I think some 3d televisions use this technology (though most seem to be going for the passive glasses). Playing games in 3d is very cool though. Highly recommended. |

Viewing stuff in 3D or playing 3D games is perfectly feasible on a laptop as long as your laptop meets the hardware requirements of the software you're using.
If you want to watch 3D movies using something like Nvidia 3D vison you'll need to ensure your laptop has the appropriate connections. Creating 3D movies is going to be tricky using a single webcam because I suspect you need at least two cameras to create a proper 3D image. If you do a google search for "3D webcam software" there are a heap of results. A lot of them seem to just use gimmicks to identify a foreground image and then generate an anaglyphic effect on the basis of what the software assumes to be the foreground and background. Generating a proper 3D image is more complex but there does seem to be quite a bit of software around that'll do it if you use a pair of USB webcams. |

I meant an application that uses the webcam to track where you are and create a 3D effect.

One day we might be able to get the Playstation Move to be PC compatible. That just uses a single webcam, and tracks your position with the glowing ball on the end of the controller.
Still, someone would have to write a driver for it first. As for Kinect, I'm not entirely sure how it works

![]() Presumably it was to do with the chemistry behind LCD technology?. |

The Kinect works by firing out a laser across the field of play and then motion capture technology is used to track a user's movements with the built in webcam. It's similar to the motion capture technology used in movies, but instead of you having to prance around in a bodysuit and glowing balls, the Kinect keeps track of what points on the laser field is broken so it knows where you are and roughly what you are doing. It works so fast that it is actually quite accurate. It also has built in software that has a defined set of parameters (A person is usually between this height and that height, they normally move like this, the thing dancing around is probably the person and not a sofa etc.).
Until very recently this type of motion capture was very expensive and reserved for the likes of major blockbuster movies. T3 magazine did a good article on how it worked last year, I'll see if I can find it. |
