Series 7 "postponed"?
Some interesting stuff coming out, summed up on this site
http://www.kasterborous.com/2011/06/series-7-postponed/ Private Eye magazine has an article about some internal chaos at the BBC regarding Who. |

The BBC probably want to move the series to the autumn. One of the reasons they split the series this year may be that they want to ease the shift from spring to autumn. I don't think they have said this, but I have my suspicions.

Also next year has several big sporting events. Euro 2012 - 8 June and 1 July 2012, and the Summer Olympics, from 27 July to 12 August 2012.

The Olympics will play havoc with any series next year. It would make far more sense to either reschedule the entire series or split it again than it would to risk having episodes postponed or moved around with no notice.
If I was Moff or the Beeb, I'd be wanting to see if this year's split showing has any effect on veiwing figures before deciding on next year's scheduling. If they lose viewers by splitting it, I'd be looking for a 13 week slot and autumn would be the best bet - otherwsise, I'd split it again to it effectively running all year whilst still keeping it fresh in the kids' minds later in the year when it comes to chosing Xmas presents. |

The fact that a "four specials" story has appeared from somewhere does need consideration. If Karen and Arthur and Alex are not in it next year, and Steven is busy writing and producing Sherlock, it could be that there simply is no time to recast a companion, write 13 episodes of Doctor Who and basically start the story again with a new companion on board. There are rumours that next year may be Moffatts last and he has said it finds it hard sometimes to come up with ideas. This may be the way things are done now. Perhaps next year will see SM and Matt depart leaving the BBC a good long time to put in place a new team and a new Doctor.

Moving it to the autumn would make sense. Every year the sporting events take over programming, and every year they get a dangerous rabble of whovians baying for blood because the schedule just keeps getting messed with - there's also the consideration that in terms of franchise opportunities in the US, doctor who makes a lot of fiscal sense, as it's likely to hit higher in the ratings over there for BBC America/Sci Fi as well.
You also have to remember that the BBC owns the property, and not the current round of producers, meaning that while it would be a messy prospect, there's no reason why the BBC wouldn't just actively start recruiting a new team if Cardiff were stamping their feet that much - which would also make sense, as I could have sworn that I heard the BBC were planning on moving a lot of their in-house productions to one location in order to cut costs. |

That's good news, Craggers. I couldn't honestly see the Beeb dropping the show, regardless of backstage shenanigans. It's the kind of show that needs a creative talent driving it and a good actor in the role, but it copes *very* easily at replacing both. If there was backstage trouble, I'm sure a new actor/producer would have stepped/been parachuted in sharpish.

Like the whole Hobbit debacle, a film guaranteed to make money yet it took 4/5 years to get going due to studio problems/squabbling. |
