I think that series 6 will wrap up the Rory/Amy saga as companions so I fully expect to see new ones for series 7 I just hope Matt stays on for a few more years just yet. I hope series 7 won't be his last.

This news will surely piss off our resident cancellation-predicting members. Perhaps this will shut them up for a while... but I doubt it

Amy and Rory have been the best companions so far, in my opinion. It will be sad to see them go, but I think the change is necessary so that we see the 11th Doctor with some different companions.

This cannot be correct . That forum member who does tv studies said the ratings were being made deliberately poor because the head of bbc wants an excuse to cancel . He said there would not be another. And he should know - he studies tv.

sounds like, how pathetic! That hyperbolic comment about newspaper front pages rather suggests they have an inflated sense of their own self worth!

the bbc haven't left it late to confirm anything, they don't officially confirm a new series till the last one is finished iirc, and as such if anything it's probably earlier than usual.

Well, I want Rory to stay forever, but given that that is unlikely, how about the talented Madame Vastra (and Jenny, if you must) for companion?

Yes and No.
He timelocked them! Whatever that means.

Come on, they've had a really good run, and this is the first time since the relaunch in '05 that the doctor AND his companions have lasted more than one series together, which almost makes me think Amy & Rory's time in the tardis has lasted a lot longer that is really has. I was getting really fed up with them chopping and changing companions just when you were starting to get into them. But here, it actually feels like a natural end for them.

This voice was in The Doctors Wife a few weeks back.

Glad to hear the confirmation of Series 7

I can exclusively reveal that the Doctors companion next year will be

Spoiler
The Knitted Character from Harry Hill's TV Burp

Thought I would reveal it here before the millions of threads speculating the person who's playing the companion.

more and likely the bbc are going to see what the ratings are for series 6 spring and autumn figures to decide when series 7 will be shown, it will be a full 13 eps probably not split in two. spring would be a problem next year with possible low ratings, early good spring weather, football and olympics. or possibly better ratings if 13 eps starting early september and finishing at the end of nov with a cliffhanger for xmas also x factor is getting a bit stale in the autumn and steven approach is much more suited for darker evenings

This is true. Daylight streaming through the windows doesn't' suit this Doctor's stories.

WOOO!!!!

Matt Smith is just phenomenal and i do hope that he lasts for a few more years after the 7th series! A 6 year Smith run would be phenomenal!

I will genuinely miss Amy and Rory, (aside from Donna Noble Captain Jack and Sarah Jane) they are the best companions the show has ever had IMO! And the TARDIS Trio alongside River Song truly makes for a fantastic team!

But i also look forward to see how other companions will be introduced into the Moff reign of Who and what cliffhangers will be left to answer in Series 7 from Series 6!

The Guardian online is reporting this story as "Fourteen new episodes of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith have been commissioned with "a good chunk" of them airing next year, the BBC has confirmed."

Which along with the Radio Times retraction of it's original tweet saying "14 episodes in 2012", retweeting it as just "14 episodes", adds more fuel to the idea that there are more significant announcements to come...

Now that they have been revealed to be River's parents, for some reason I don't want them round much longer. I can't explain it because I like them both.

well i think in a sense there story will come to a natural end by the end of the second half of the series, i really like them both, but it does feel like it's time for them to move on...

I agree. Not sure why might be because it feels weird seeing them next to River who is in her late fourties while they're early twenties or because they've now got a baby to look after so aren't in any serious danger.
