I believe this is from Episode 13 where The Doctor takes The Stig (another Time Lord) back to 1964 to stop the Astronaut.

Why is it called the impossible astronaut?
just a thought like but hasn't the doctor referred to Amy as impossible a couple of times?

That's an interesting point. I never really thought much about the word 'impossible' but you might be on to something

... same here ... it only occured to me when reading this thread title that impossible (specially as we're talking doctor who) really must be something ... and so far not exactly impossible ...

Exactly the same thing happened with me lol.
There are things which seemed impossible about it such as the astronaut coming out of the water then walking back in afterwards but i'm not sure that's reason enough for the episode title

... freaky that after all this time a thread title with a couple of extra question marks makes us wonder! ... hopefully Moffat won't keep us hanging on toooo long to find out why s/he was impossible!

An Apollo 11 astronaut (the suit has the badge) walking out of a lake in the middle of Monument Valley in 2011, using some sort of futuristic tech that can kill the only remaining Time Lord in the universe who just happens to be there having a picnic with two Brits and an escaped prisoner form the 51st century who also happens to be the daughter of the two Brits who are half her age then walks back into the lake and disappears.

or...

A little girl walking around in 1969 an Apollo 11 space suit in whch her legs can't even reach the ground whilst her head around six feet from the floor miles from Cape Kennedy where all the suits produced would be logged and accounted for and who can phone the President of the United States on private, unlisted numbers no matter where he is and can't be stopped by bullets whilst also being able to travel unnoticed between a down-town warehouse where the Doctor and friends just happen to be to an orphange run by a man who thinks it's two years earlier in another part of the country where all the children have left, the rooms are occupied by aliens and the Doctor's friend also happen to be.

Maybe not quite the dictionary definition of "impossible" as an absolute term - but as close as you can get in a fantasy series with time travel as a central theme.

Maybe because, in actuality, it should be 'Impossible' for the astronaut to be there? However, with all the wibbly, wobbly, lumpy, bumpy, timey wimey stuff going on (phew) it becomes 'possible'.

Does this point to the same person being in two places at once (i.e. possibly crossing their own time stream?) - who knows. If so, it (the astronaut) really could be anyone . We'll know when the Moff (all bow down) decides to tell us.

The Slightly Unusual But Entirely Possible In A Fantasy Universe Costume That's Like The One Worn By 1960's Astronauts But We're Not Actually Saying That This One Has Ever Been Into Space Or If It Has It Doesn't Necessarily Follow That The Person Wearing It Now Was Wearing It Then So They May Not Really Be An Astronaut And We Should Probably Have Just Called This Episode Someone In A Spacesuit In A Lake In Utah Which Is A Bit Odd Innit.

Catchy title, dontcha fink?
