Hi all,

Have T-mobile restricted their data speed to new customers/contracts or if i took an iphone out would I get whatever the networks maximum is ?

Also, other than Visual Voice Mail is there anything else the network doesn't subscribe to ?

Thank you

T-Mobile don't cap the data rate. The people that think they do are misinformed, as are some of the call centre personnel.

Saying that, I wouldn't get a new contract, or renew mine, because they all have a usage limit of 500mb (a month) now. You can of course pay the £5 for the 'unlimited' booster but I would just take my business elsewhere.

They actually do cap it - unless it has changed recently.

SIM only contracts are capped to 384k unless you pay something like £12.50/month for one of the web n walk packages. Some customers have had luck in getting customer services to fart about with the system to uncap data for free. I spent a couple of days trying to get them to do it to no avail, so I cancelled.

For that reason I'd be tempted to look at 3 - they don't mess about with pointless speed limiting, they offer generous or unlimited data plans, and you get the same brilliant 3G coverage. The only issue is 2G roaming.

3 is also upgrading to 21Mbit HSPA - although it's unclear where it is a joint investment by both T-Mobile and 3 or whether the upgrade will only benefit 3 customers.

They don't. I've been dealing with the CEO's assistants for weeks. They said that there is categorically no capping unless you go over the usage limit. Before I spoke to these people, I had been talking with normal CS, including the Twitter team, and they all stated that there is a cap. The woman I was dealing with listened to all my calls and was shocked that they all had there facts wrong, and has now started a new training course for FUP and technical policies.

Perhaps they've changed things more recently - but certainly as late as the end of last year they very much were engaging in speed capping depending on type of contract.

There is no other reason why my phone (SIM only) was maxing out at about 350k, and a friend's T-Mobile contract was getting several megabits in the same spot. The 350k speed was at all times of day and in any location. Neither was it my phone - put a 3 SIM in, instant 3-4Mbit speed test result.

I wasn't the only one - it is all over the internet.

T-mobile did cap the speed until about 10 days ago. it was capped at 350k. The cap has now been lifted as there were so many complaints. I called to complain many times and the cs told me it wasnt capped. I argued till i was blue in the face. Eventually after speaking to 6 cs advisors they put me through to a guy in technical who confirmed what I just said. He told me it would be uncapped at the end of May and he was right. i now get about 1Mbps, occasionally more.

Yes, they definitely did cap the speed - I have a SIM only contract, and never ever got above 350k. I threatened to leave, and they offered me an upgrade to Web 'n' Walk Plus for free, and my speed instantly jumped from 350k to about 3Mbps.

There were 3 caps 384kb for the internet booster, 1.8mb for the extra cost package and then upto 7.2mb for tethering.
Theres a thread on here about it somewhere.

T-Mobile definitely cap the speed to 350k for standard internet and you have to ask for web and walk plus which is then capped to a maximum of 2mbit

The reason why I know this is my friend has a business t-mobile simcard and putting that sim into my phone Samsung Galaxy S2 gives me 4.5mbit immediately with the same apn settings where as I hit about 1.7-1.8mbit.

This was tested in multiple locations, geeky I know but hey.

If there was no capping then I would expect the exact same speed as my friends business t-mobile tariff.

Broadband dongle users get the full speed though.

What has it got to do with T-Mobile?

Three have got their own 3G network and it is far superior to everyone else's in my experience. I have found O2's to be slightly faster but the 3G coverage is no where near as good as Three's outside of London.

Because 3 and T-Mobile share a radio network - under the MBNL joint venture. It isn't clear as to whether HSPA upgrades affect both operators.
