River full time companion?
TLC1098
08-06-2011
Hi all I was just thinking how cool would it be for the next serie's if they axe Amy and Rory and make River a full time companion.

The reason being her and the Doctor have more chemistry than Amy,Rory and all of his past companion's apart from Sarah Jane.I feel that be are being robbed of one of the best Doctor who duo's ever.

i would like to see river as a full time companion even if it was just for 1 series...maybe amy and rory spend time with melody while we see what the Dr got up to in the 200 odd years he was travelling - maybe with River?

we cam all hope but i doubt its going to happen

True Alex Kingston would probably be too busy for a full time contract

The only time I'd want to see River Song as the full time companion is if it's a younger version of the character. Let's see a young actress cast as her as a teenager or young adult.

Oh look a River Song post I didnt start
I think sadly Alex Kingston is too busy for 13 episodes. I think having some younger would be cool.

I don't like the idea myself, aside from the fact Alex wouldn't want a role like this full time, the story works best because we see her in small doses. Having her for an entire run would be overkill.

A new actress wouldn't work IMO, unless she was the double of Alex in looks and acting.

I agree, while I do love her character to bits I'm worried that if she was in every episode the novelty would wear off. As it is, when I hear she's going to be in an episode I really look forward to it - what if one day she was in a rubbish episode

It's occured to me that if at some time she does get into a proper relationship with the doctor or marry him or whatever, doesn't that kind of spell the end for the doctor/companion thing, at least until the first time she meets him (at which point presumably he will go on living 'beyond' his relationship with her).

It would seem a bit unnecessary for him to have a companion if he's already got company- they'd be a bit 'third wheel' unless she were the companion.

I guess they'll continue to do it so that most of his and her time together is off screen (which I rather like, gives their relationship a bit of privacy, even from us) and then presumably if he gets bored or cross or whatever, he can leave her for 100 years worth of adventures with someone else and then return at the exact time and place he left her. If he wanted?

speaking of which, considering they are both time travellers, I have no idea WHY they seem condemned/compelled/fated to meet in the wrong order? is it because there is never a point when they are in the same place (metaphorically) meaning that neither of them can 'spoil' the other about either the past or the future and that therefore they can only talk to each other about what's going on at that particular moment in time, so they can't plan to undo the pesky process and are kind of locked into everything panning out as it inevitably does?

That doesn't make much sense to me, and I made it up. Their relationship is a head****

I'm not sure. I like the way it is at the moment - River waltzes in, gets out her diary, flirts with the Doctor, helps save the day, makes some references to events we haven't seen yet, and disappears for a few episodes.

I don't agree. If she was a younger River she could be a completely different character and over the Series see her progress towards being something like the River we know, and then if necessary (depending on the Actress) regenerate into Alex Kingston.

I think its interesting to note that The Doctor and River seem unlikely to settle down in a shack somewhere. The Doctor is too much of a traveller and River is too independant. River never gets jeolous when he has other companions- So far. I think thats what wonderful about there relationship.

I think the suggestion of having a teenage version of River would be outlawed on the basis that it'd be exceedingly creepy given the nature of their relationship now.

Unless they make her his granddaughter or something.

To the contrary, I was thinking on the train today, what the hell are we going to do when we get to the end of the River Song saga...all that unknown future

River Song is like chilli powder - a little bit spices things up, but you can't have it on it's own.

River as we know her now is too overpowering, too independent, too competent and confident to work as a partnership with the Doctor. In dramatic terms, you understand, still perfect as a couple! She's far too much the Doctor's equal, and a violent one at that. That's why she works in the episodes where there's so much going on that she can share the load.

A younger River, before she's gained that confidence, would be just like any other companion - except there'd be no uncertainty about the path she's going to take, because we know how she ends up. Yes, yes, I know, time can be rewritten - but that would end up completely invalidating everything we know about her, and everything we've gone through. So why not have a different character instead?

Personally, I expect now to see River being killed off by the end of this series - due to some timey-wimey stuff she will have existed in the previous and current realities but not in the future one.

Shame to see her go but the way the story has been going, I suspect there won't be much of a River story left to be told after this year.

I think if she isn't a companion it'll be a massive waste. Alex has great chemistry with Matt - a lot more than Karen does actually.
