Evening all! Just caught up. Has this not been posted yet?!

Official BBC response to complaints about the bed scene

Complaint

We received complaints from some viewers who felt a scene featuring Christian and Syed in bed together during an episode of EastEnders was inappropriate.

The BBC's response

EastEnders aims to reflect real life, and this means including and telling stories about characters from many different backgrounds, faiths, religions and sexualities.

We approach our portrayal of homosexual relationships in exactly the same way as we do heterosexual relationships, ensuring depictions of affection or sexuality between couples are suitable for pre-watershed viewing.

We would also point out that same-sex civil partnerships became law in December 2005, giving equal rights to gay couples in the UK. The BBC cannot discriminate by treating gay characters differently to heterosexual characters.

We have also received a lot of very positive feedback about the storyline regarding Christian and Syed's relationship.
Evening Thank you!!!

How anyone could think the bed scene was inappropriate baffles me!!
Good response by the BBC BIB Glad they got lots of praise for the scene!!

In all seriousness, I'll always be afraid of that......In 10 yrs time when Chryed have left (moved to Brighton cos the seaside is better for the child) I'll still be scouring soap mags for any mentions. Nervous habit.
or maybe

...you'll just have to constantly remind yourself:
'keep calm...carry on...' and 'it's OK, it's all OK'

I wonder who from...

Thanks for posting. Doesn't say how many, so we can assume not a lot.
Yeah, I don't think they received many complaints either. If they had, a bigger deal would have been made out of it.

Thanks for this.

So does the fact they've released this response mean that they have received a significant number of complaints, or is it just standard procedure?

Or alternatively, is it just an excuse to point out that they can't/don't discriminate and that they received a lot of positive feedback?

You're all welcome. I had been checking the site every day but hadn't for a couple of days - Laura's post about Ofcom reminded me to check again.

Thought it was a great response from the BBC.

Do they automatically do that when they get ANY complaints? I think we can safely assume there were very few, regardless, otherwise the tabloids would've been all over it.

But BiB, LOL. Yeah, can't imagine who those people were....

It's a good job I don't work for the BBC, my response to the bed scene complaints would have been a brief unambiguous 2 word reply

According to their complaints page, they only publish response's where a significant number of complaints have been made. But I guess it depends how many complaints they would consider to be significant?

The website says: These are public responses by the BBC to recent issues of wide audience concern which caused significant numbers of complaints or raised significant issues.

Could be either! Sometimes a story about complaints only appears in the press when the BBC releases their official response and the press usually get hold of the actual numbers, so I suppose there's still a slim chance we'll find out the number of complaints.

However many there were, I bet there was more praise...

That bit's great

I feel like they're kind of saying "and Christian and Syed will be seen having a civil partnership in the show at some stage so get over it"

Hmm, I'm sort of disappointed they've had enough complaints to warrent a response, but sort of glad too, because their response is basically 'tough s**t!'.

Aw, good on the BBC! Great response. My reply to any homophobic complaints would not have been so articulate

I loved that the subtext to that sentence was almost saying 'We had no choice; we're actually legally obliged to show a bed scene."

Ha! They probably had that statement written out before the scene even aired.
