Menu > Settings> mobile networks > internet tethering ( select tick box)
or wifi tethering ( turn your phone into a wifi hotspot ) |

Are you currently connected to the Internet on your MacBook Pro with WiFi at the moment?
If so, head over to the menu bar on the right hand side (where the clock etc is) and look for the Airport icon. If you click on that and you've got WiFi tethering enabled; the Samsung Galaxy S2 should appear in there. I'm only clutching at straws as I haven't got the phone or the laptop myself. |

For ease of use, use your phone as a wireless hotspot. It's somewhere like... Settings > Mobile Networks And Wireless > Wireless AP. Go in there and tick the box to turn it on (Note: you cannot use your phone's wifi while this is on and it does drain the battery a heck of a lot) The phone will show you what the wireless network (made by the phone) is called and the password, so you go to the Network selector thingy on Mac (Sorry, don't own a Mac), select the right network then enter the pin. That should do it. |

I believe 3 provide lower connection speeds to phones rather than dongles. Mind you I have seen a 3 dongle running at double digit bps speeds in London E2. Estimated time to download a Windows update was measured in months! |

Which tariff do you have?
O2's older tariffs do not include tethering. To tether with them without violating the contract requires paying extra. O2's new tariffs (where data is done separatately as a bold-on) include tethering as standard, as part of the £3/£6/£10 (100MB/500MB/1GB) data packages. |

Kind of a rude reply. You didn't tell us how far you got, so he just assumed you didn't know how to set it up on your phone.

Also, your Mac won't show up as a wi-fi device because it's not broadcasting anything. It doesn't need to. It just wants to recieve signals. |
