IPod Touch 4 Software update.(Lost Apps & Music?)
The last time I did a firmware update on my IPod, I lost all my Apps & Music. Fortunately I was able to recover the Software operating system, but was left with a naked iPod.
I do not use synchronising on ITunes as it puts all the crap you don’t want (everything) so I choose to put music on in a manual basis.
Can someone out there explain to me in an idiots guide how I can update my IPod software without losing all my valuable content?

If you are not using iTunes what method are you using to backup your apps & music? I have to say that using iTunes makes things a damn sight easier!

Yes I am using Itunes, I dont have much choice. Its Itunes that looses everything, it formats and puts back the opperating system only.

iTunes doesn't add music? Are you sure that "Sync Music" is ticked under the Music tab on the iPod screen within iTunes?

You can manually manage what music iTunes loads onto iPods too - you can create a playlist and choose to just sync the playlist, or 'Manually Manage Music' and drag and drop (from the song list in iTunes onto the iPod icon under Devices on the left bar).

Its the Apps , Music is easy to put back on. But when you pay for apps, then only to loose the dam things on an update seems stupid and a bit of a con by apple.

You'll need to create a backup before updating:
