Wasn't that neighbours figure almost the same it was getting in its final weeks before it switched to digital. I seem to remember that it was regularly around 500k and sometimes a bit lower.

Good rating for the Waltons documentary. Your prediction from a couple of weeks ago was spot-on GeorgeS, higher than what many of us expected! Interesting that a few documentaries in that slot recently have managed ~5.5m like Strangeways, The Savoy and now this.

its not often I'm right but ITV seem to be doing ok without drama on Monday nights this year. As drama works for them on Thursdays it seems like an ok solution to them for both nights.

Seriously impressive peak at 18:10, I imagine it was above 8m for most of the 6pm hour.

Definitely in summer now looking at those figures. The Waltons documentary did do very well and is probably the story of last night, well predicted by GeorgeS. Case Histories did alright though, 4m is acceptable at this time of year IMO especially after how Sunday's episode rated and the circumstances which led to that.

Not much grabbing me elsewhere from last night except those are some big figures for the aussie soaps compared to their recent averages with even H&A nearly at the million mark.

Last nights UK ratings, BBC 2 should make some more James May Toy Stories.

It was unlikely to return anyway. Lead actor Jason Isaacs has been cast in NBC's Awake, which debuts this autumn. That will be a near full-time commitment for him for at least the rest of this year (even if it were to flop and be cancelled) and, if the show succeeds, could see him become a permanent fixture in the US. Unlike his previous US show, Brotherhood, which only involved 13 episode seasons (thus leaving him time to do things like Harry Potter movies in the UK as well) Awake would be (if it succeeds) a full 22 episodes a year.

Case Histories timeshifted to 6.41m in the officials on 5th June. I don't think it is in any danger of being cancelled - (ought a 2nd series be planned already.)

I'm 99% sure that the answer to that is YES, Neighbours just broke the record.

The high as of this time last year was 454,000 for a repeat of The Big Bang Theory on GO. Neighbours would just eclipse that by the narrowest of margins with 455,000. I don't believe anything has come in higher since, so it would take the lead.

It was also Home & Away's highest rating last night since 2009 according to some sources, so a very good night for the Aus soaps generally.

EDIT: I've just remembered the Royal Wedding. I remember the networks simulcast coverage on their digital channels and I think 7TWO might have broke the 500k mark with their coverage. Therefore, that was not a new record last night. But it was if you exclude "special event" programming.

Okay, so I've done some digging, and I believe this is the top 5 highest rated broadcasts on Australian digital TV as of now:

BTW I have the Morning Glory (Daybreak) DVD and I plan to watch it on Wednesday.

Nor a Coast fan. Out of the BBC's remit to inform, educate and entertain, I would put Coast in the first two.

The Waltons doc was always likely to get 5m given the subject matter and the heavy promotion during ITV's soaps, but the fact CH was dented massively by the F1 on Sunday clearly gave it a leg up too.

I suspect I was one of many though who watched both CHs back to back last night - I reckon it will end up with nigh on 5m for both eps in the official figures. Didn't enjoy this 2 parter as much as the opening one - seemed a bit too implausible, particularly how everyone linked in together to the plot.

Just how small a place is Edinburgh?

I'm not convinced it's a winner, regardless of the ratings.

It looks like Case Histories will end up with an official series average of about ~5.5m, which is respectable and depending on the actor's availability and cost of the programme, could be enough for another series (Luther made it back with a 5m average).

But I think it's starting to become really important now that BBC1 manages to get some new 6m+ officially rated 6-part drama series through to replace the likes of Ashes to Ashes, Lark Rise to Candleford, Waking The Dead, Hustle (next one is final series), Spooks (next one is rumoured to be one of the last series), Merlin (4 years into a 5 year plan) which have already ended or rumoured to be ending in the next couple of years. New Tricks could also not be too far off from ending given that Amanda Redman has said she might want to move on after this series, although I suppose they could continue the show without her (but it wouldn't be the same). A pretty big hole is starting to form in the BBC1 drama schedule, and whilst they've had Sherlock and Upstairs Downstairs (both easily 6m+) come through in the last 12 months which will cover about 10 hours altogether for their next series, that still isn't anywhere near enough to fill the ~50 hours of 6m+ ratings those aforementioned dramas were/are capable of and used to all air in one yearly cycle on BBC1. Shows like Garrow's Law, George Gently and Silk are all pretty good rated dramas officially averaging a solid 5-6m which have begun in the last few years but not really at the level those other dramas were at.

I think I basically said the same thing last Autumn and was hoping Accused and/or Outcasts would be able to average 6m+, but neither did it or even come close really, although Accused is returning. Was also hoping Case Histories could do it but again, it's not happened, however in its favour it was always going to be difficult in that slot up against another drama and Sunday's F1 situation has made things worse for the show. A lot now rests on The Body Farm (their next big 6-part series) to do well in the Autumn - they could really do with this one officially averaging 6m+. If scheduled well, I don't see why it won't since it's a WTD spin-off, but we know that the BSI can screw things up sometimes. They've also got this new 8x60' spy drama made by Kudos coming next year called 'Morton' - there's probably a lot riding on that too and really need it to become a hit.

BBC1 have Doctor Who next year as well as Upstairs Downstairs and a new drama series starring Ben Miller as a British detective set in the Caribbean. They have also commissioned 25 hours of additional 9pm drama for next year and are still likely to commission more. Full details in the BBC Press Office office page under the BBC1 section.

Both Embarrasing Fat Bodies and The Restaraunt Inspector held up well against the Waltons as did CH. Channel 5 will be pleased that Police Interceptors broke a million and Restaraunt Inspector did good at 9pm despite heavy factual competition.

Yep sure. Doctor Who, as ever, will be a massive ratings puller next year. I wonder if it'll be 6/7 or 14 episodes next year though? They didn't make it clear when the announcement of the show's return was made last week. Some people are saying that they'll possibly only have 6-7 episodes next year in the Autumn.

I'd forgotten about Death in Paradise - this one's going to be a major drama series for them since it's 8 episodes. I like the sound of it, it's a cop drama (so should do pretty well given the popularity of the genre) set in the Carribean with a good cast and the executive Tony Jordan's last two BBC dramas IIRC were Hustle and Life on Mars, so this could do really well. Out of the new dramas recently announced here, 'Anthony and Cleopatra' seems to be the major one since it's the only 6-part series and written by Sally Wainwright who has a good track record with dramas. Incidentally, speaking of older dramas, I wonder why the BBC didn't renew 'Five Days' which was such a big hit for them last year (7.8m average) - it should've been given another series with those sorts of figures.

It could go either way. Generally crime dramas set abroad dont do that well but there are exceptions. Van Der Valk was a stable on ITV for years. The BBC tried something set in southern Africa recently that was moderately successful, but other than that I can't think of any.

Maigret I suppose too if you go way back.

Case Histories did as well as expected Monday - with the low Sunday figure setting the bar. Excellent soap figures, EE well deserved and CS topping the night again.

The Waltons did very well for ITV1- I don't know why they chose to make the programme during the girls 27th year, but viewers obviously remember them as they grow up. (Just noticed it is part of extraordinary families season on ITV1). Followed tonight by 1st episode of Baby Hospital - which seems more of a C4 programme to me.

Hoping EE stays high tonight and Luther scores a decent opener. BBC1 ought win all slots comfortably tonight from 7.00-10.30.

Zen did very well at the beginning of the year with a 5.7m average across 3 episodes, still got cancelled though.
