I'm not one of the 3m homes with Virgin, so I don't know how it works.

With Sky. you just press a red button and there is a new selection of programmes, everyday, ready to watch, on your TV, with no faffing about on a computer. No internet connection needed.

I suspect most people who use iPlayer are watching reasonably low quality on their PC's. Plus, you need a good, unlimited broadband connection to stream.



I would think News Corp purposely sold Glee to an FTA channel to build up viewers. Then acquire it later. If I was them, that's what I would have done. Good business sense.


But X-files and Star Trek TNG only became household names when they went to a main channel!!

Of course, if acquisitions never see light of day on free channels, they won't grab public attention. There's loads of quality shows on Sky that perform well though without it. But non Sky viewers wouldn't necessarily know much about them.

How many multichannel hits have never had an airing on a main channel? Glee season one was repeated in primetime on C4 for example. The Inbetweeners has grown, no doubt from additional exposure on C4. Gavin & Stacey was repeated on BBC2, after season one. Being Human was on BBC2. The list goes on.

I wondered about that, going solely from what I can find online, whilst she has worked for other broadcasters and parts of the BBC it's always been politics or home affairs. She studied history at university.

Kuenssberg is definitely a great signing for ITV News, and a real loss to the BBC. A bit disappointed she'll no longer be covering politics though as she was great at that.

Great retention for Luther. I really didn't see these huge ratings for it coming given how the first series rated. I guess the impressive ad campaign in the run up worked wonders, as well as the extremely weak competition.


Good rating for a repeat of this show. Can't remember it being as high as that in a long long time, even for a new episode. Normally it's in the 300/400k range.

On Virgin you simply click 'Home' - option 2 'Catch Up TV On Demand' - from there you choose 'all days' which gives you the 7 days of programmes from the main/multi channels (Mo-Su). If you select 'all channels' instead you get a menu showing - BBC iPlayer, ITV Net Player, 4 on Demand and Demand 5. So easy a child could use it, for that reason it has an optional PIN.

If for example 1 in 7 homes have Virgin, we could naturally estimate that 1 in 7 BARB homes have Virgin (which has tv catch up). That represents millions of potential viewers who don't need to set the V+/PVR to record a soap/drama/comedy show/chat show/documentary.

She is talented but she in no Nick Robinson, her voice was quite grating also, the BBC have a wealth of correspondents and she can be replaced quite easily. Working as Business Editor for ITN is not quite the same thing as being a heavyweight at the Houses of Parliament, she will now be attending press conferences with the CEO of M&S - rather than the PM David Cameron.

With regard to ratings, she will have 2m or so less viewers.

Believe it or not, the #1 cable network among adults 18-49 last week was the History channel. A raft of unscripted fare aimed at males aged 18-49 has fuelled ratings for the channel in recent years. The most notable success has been Pawn Stars. Last Monday, 2 episodes pulled 2.5 and 2.7 ratings and more than 7m viewers. Not only did this top cable on both measures but the 2.7 wasn't beaten by any network other than NBC (The Voice, AGT, Stanley Cup).

Of the 2 new shows, Switched At Birth (following The Secret Life) is looking good while Nine Lives of Chloe King premiered rather soft (following Pretty Little Liars).

Other scripted on basic cable included AMC's The Killing, which pulled 2.32m (0.7), A&E's The Glades with 2.39m (0.6), MTV's Teen Wolf on 1.80m (0.7), Syfy's Sanctuary which had 1.28m (0.4) and Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva returned with 2.86m (1.0).

Top unscripted shows other than those already mentioned included Deadliest Catch with 3.86m (1.7), Tosh.0 with 2.68m (1.4), Keeping Up With The Kardashians with 2.75m (1.5) and Real Housewives of New Jersey with 2.53m (1.3). My Big Fat Gypsy Weddings has hit the US. It's not a huge hit for TLC but it's still doing alright with 1.70m (0.7).

Looks like Murray will begin at 5.30 approx today, so another early evening match for BBC Two, which they'll be very happy about I'm sure.

I doubt Waterloo Road would have a huge cross over audience, but other programmes are likely to be down a bit I'd imagine.

So the BBC v ITV thing that some people like to change every topic into, now stretches to the movement of one news correspondent.

I hardly think ratings count in news, ask Jon Snow. He presents a well respected news programme to an audience that would be classed as a flop and candidate to be axed on here.

It does seem that even when In The Arena returns to its usual level, it might struggle to beat Olbermann.

I think tv news is the one area where viewing share represents quality. BBC1 news is constantly the highest rated news channel, Newsnight on BBC2 is a totally different programme with in studio political/arts interviews. If C4 was that good a lot more people would watch it at 7pm in primetime, the same with C5 - maybe people do not trust C5 for serious news. I have been watching tv news for over 30 years and I have noticed the ITN quality decline since the 1990's. As a result viewing figures for BBC have remained steady but ITN audiences are lower than ever.

Those who thought Donald Trump’s chatter about running for president was merely a ploy to extort more money out of NBC for Celebrity Apprentice may have their “toldja!” moment. According do the New York Post, NBC is ponying up $160 million to Mark Burnett productions and Donald Trump for two more years of Celebrity Apprentice. According to the story, Trump will personally pocket $65 million per year, a sizable boost over his current contract.

While the amounts seem staggering if you consider about 25 two-hour episodes per season, that’s roughly 100 hours of programming for $160 million or a cost to NBC of about $1.6 million per hour. That seems on the high side for reality program that doesn’t rate anywhere near as well as American Idol (or even The Voice), but even at that level it’s still considerably cheaper than most scripted programming. On the other hand there isn’t really much revenue potential for repeats/syndication/DVDs, etc.

The demo's must be really good for NBC to pay that - it certainly doesn't get BBC Apprentice type audience share. Just shows you how much Ad money there is available for the US market.

I notice that from 4 July Pointless takes the 5.15pm slot on BBC One...

I'm not sure where Tvbtn get 25 episodes from - the last season was 12, each 2 hours long. And with 18-49 ratings just in the high 2's, it seems like an extraordinary amount of money for a very average show (especially as a revival of the "civilian" Apprentice was a major flop last year).

I guess replacements are hard to come by (Mark Cuban has the money and name recognition in the US to do it but I can't think of many others). And if he does have an ownership stake in the show then they've probably got to do as he wants.

ITV1 and C4 both benefitting then from BBC2 being tied up with Wimbledon. And I think that rating proves Today at Wimbledon would be better in a regular later slot (10.35pm on BBC1 would be best), with BBC2 continuing live coverage until 8.30pm like they used too.

It shows how far Tuesday's have fell for ITV1 that yesterday could be considered a reasonable evening for them. Mind you, I thought Jamie's Food Revolution would do much better than that on Channel 4! BBC1 had a string night as always, and it isn't just the weak opposition that's helping Luther - shows have failed before in the Tuesday 9pm slot on BBC1 despite bad opposition so the programme must be doing something right.

The Wright Stuff with Gabby Logan is a ridiculous name and if its a success I hope they change it but keep the two shows synonymous (Daybreak & Lorraine spring to mind). If thats their intentions then its a good marketing strategy to launch the new show.

Interesting, Richard Osman hinted that some announcement would be made by the BBC the other day.
