Signal on O2 wass full with HSDPA, however the internet died to a crawl. Tried to tweet a picture after pet shop boys waiting for take that and would not do it at all.

Anyone been to any of the other venues ?

Was the issue just on O2 or all networks ?

O2 was pretty naff at Sunderland as well and one of the tabloid journos (possibly Gordan Smart) said Vodaphone was rubbish as well.

It could be a simple case of the signals being blocked by all the equipment thats around?? I always found the Newcastle Arena to be terrible for mobile reception as well.

That's not a fault with O2, more of a feature

Must be a great gig if you're pissing around with your mobile during it..

It wasn't good with Orange.

Rossall - we were using our phones to try to get in touch with friends we had who were there so we could meet up before the show started. During the show we didn't use them (well, apart from in the pointless bits.)

I was there last night and the Orange signal was pretty poor - 2 bars, no 3G (on iPhone4). Could send a text but not an MMS. The signal improved significantly once back in the car park!

So due to the amount of people in 1 area and the available frequencies no network would have been that good. It's a limitation of the technology, too many people talking texting, and.using data. There will only be a certain amount of cell capacity and frequencies in the area. All networks will be under load.

I went to see Green Day at Wembley Stadium and mobile internet was non responsive. It happens anywhere where there is a lot of people in one place.

Which network was that ?

Anyone comment on three ?

Also, is it true that the higher the frequency the more capacity... ie. 2100 better than 900 ?

Cheers

No it's not true the higher the frequency the more capacity, however Three do have a lot of frequencies they have a bigger range of frequencies than most of the other operators, however the likes of O2 can now use their 2G frequencies for 3G.

Three tend to have more capacity because the backhaul is very good and also due to 2100Mhz having a shorter range they need to space the cells more closely together, which increases capacity.

Also they have less phone customers than the others (although more mobile broadband), so at things like concerts Three is much more likely to perform better.

However due to the fact that there are so many thousands of people in 1 small area and the likelihood that there are only 1, 2 or if you're lucky 3 cells within reach for each provider in the area all networks are going to be slow due to overload in capacity.

Some may perform a little bit better than others though. If operators have been really clever they may have put a number of microcells in the stadium itself if you're lucky. If they have then performance would be increased quite a lot, but I'm not sure what networks do that and at what stadiums.

I know at festivals some networks take mobile units (cars / trucks) with cells to add capacity.

Here's some pictures of Orange microcells

and Voda ones

and the equipment needed for them

That is true when you're discussing cellular frequencies.

2100MHz has a lot of capacity, but it doesn't have anywhere near as much range as 900MHz (for which the reverse is true).

Attended Sunday's show in Manchester and I'm on Vodafone, signal was not so good inside but did improve once outside the stadium at the end of the night as people left the area.

Which is the best network then that can cope with demand ?

Anyone go to a show and got good signal

I'm off to see them in ireland, wonder what signal will be like there

Each network will vary based on location. Do you really want to go to a live show and then dick around with your phone playing with the internet?

There is a lot of waiting around between support acts and the main acts at these shows. The main act is usually fashionably late so the phone helps kill the time and lets you share the moment on various social networks.
