I'm intrigued by it as well. It's worth noting that some TVs can respond to a 4:3 signal over HDMI. Others like my current Samsung ignore it. Maybe that's the difference that some people are seeing?
Aspect ratio handling has always been an issue and sadly HDMI does seem to have been a step back after SCART.
Here's my understanding of the situation when using HDMI:
TV handling of 4:3 material.

Some respond to the reported resolution to switch ratio.
Some respond to the WS flag that can be transmitted along HDMI (the equivalent of the 12v SCART signal).
Some respond to nothing and leave the aspect ratio at what the user last chose for HDMI.
Source handling of 4:3 material.

Some transmit a 16:9 picture with inserted pillar boxes.
Some transmit a 4:3 picture and don't signal the fact.
Some transmit a 4:3 picture and signal the fact.
My current setup is: T3 (Samsung) and then either:
S1 (Humax - yay for the HDR)
S3a (Sky HD - bah).
S3b (Sony PS3).
To further complicate things a Sky box has an option - you can force all HDMI to be either 720, 1080 or 'Auto'. In the latter mode at least some TVs change ratio - my old Toshiba did. Oh and most (but not all
The PS3 has no such option but thankfully I found that ripping my old DVDs to disk caused pillar boxing to be inserted so that solved that problem.
I'm not sure what options the Humax offers (perhaps someone can fill me in on that). I'm just happy with it inserting pillar boxes and transmitting a 16:9 picture. I don't watch much old material anyway but the HDR handles it far better for me than Sky. For what it's worth I emailed Samsung about their handling and in their reply they claimed that HDMI was incapable of carrying a 4:3 image. I suspect they were confused. HD should(*) only ever be 16:9 but HDMI can carry anything. The video protocol has a WS switching flag.
(*)Tell that to Syfy channel and ITV who have been known to transmit HD 4:3 material in 4:3 aspect ratio

30 times is a skip of 60 mins at the default, 60 is 120 mins (at a guess skipping beyond the programme end). Simply tapping in the time code to jump will get there much quicker and with less finger wear
. On my box pressing skip in chasing playback is ignored if the real time is less than 2 minutes away.
