Once you have pressed guide you are committed to downloading a new epg before you can activate the schedule. To work as you have found you have to go directly to the schedule. Have you tried simply learning the schedule command from your original remote ? Daft as it sounds pressing instant record before guide will get you directly to the schedule.

Yes, the thing goes through the whole process and says it has a learned function attached to that key, (and a couple of multi-key functions attached to other keys as well), it's just that after it goes through the 'reprogram remote' phase, the reprogrammed keys have reverted to the default.


Actually, that makes perfect sense, (Since we already knew that if tuner 1 in recording it won't do the update.) So, thanks, that should work around that problem. (Also, I think I might have another go at reprogramming the remote. Shudder!)

Great, now Im getting the message even when watching a recording so the EPG cant be downloading.

The EPG can be downloading when you are watching a recording, just not whilst making one using tuner 1.

Thats strange because previously watching a recording meant I got instant access to the EPG.

Perhaps (at a guess) that's because as you were not using tuner 1 for viewing it automatically used it to continuously update the EPG? Not sure why it should have changed now.

I still do, Not sure if V1.00.13 was the same because I used schedule/red. Pressing guide does the same as if tuner 1 was recording when viewing a record ie Displays the cached epg.

Youre saying it does, the previous poster is saying it doesnt, well someone is wrong.

Every time under 13 it was instant, every time under 15 apart from this one and it was instant too.

All i remember is I deleted a recording and started to watch something and then went to record something which I couldnt because the EPG was never going to download.

I assume I must have been downloading the EPG and got annoyed with the wait so left it and started watching other programs and then couldnt select it because it hadnt finished downloading.

Still, its another bug that should be fixed, you shouldnt have to stop watching, wait 45 secs to be able to select a recording and theres no way round that one.

My suggestion is not incompatible with Graham's.

I'm suggesting that if it is playing back a recording then it does not need tuner 1 to view the 'current' channel.

Therefore tuner 1 can be used to update the cached EPG. Presumably it only goes through this process every so often - even if it is frequently. So if you ask for the guide whilst watching a recording you stand a good chance of getting immediate access to a recently cached EPG.

Again, just trying to come up with a theory to fit observed behaviour.

The cached epg is constantly refreshed from data transmitted along with each programme, if tuner 1 is accessing a programme the epg is being refreshed in the background in a similar manner to the way a freeview box does it. There's no need to seperately tune to the Freesat home transponder to update the existing epg. If tuner 1 is not recording and apparently if you not watching a recording, pressing guide discards the cached epg, contacts the freesat home transponder and downloads a whole new from scratch which takes about 40 seconds. It would take much longer than that using the epg data transmitted along with the programmes.

For any other condition pressing guide simulates schedule/red and loads the cached epg.

I simply said that I am not sure what the effect of pressing guide while viewing recording on the old firmware because I never press guide anyway. On this occassion I did simply to see what happened, I merely posted what happened on my box. Hard to imagine it would be different for anyone else using the same firmware.

As I just posted watching a recording I can press guide or schedule/red get an instant epg and schedule a recording immediately. Anyone else care to confirm this ?

I can normally press guide to schedule a recording but yesterday I couldnt I just started watching a program and went to record something and I couldnt.

I left it there for a long time and it doesnt seem to update while playing back. So the only option was to stop playing, press guide and wait 45 secs for the EPG to download, select the recording and then resume the playback.

I can confirm that, during play back pressing guide on my HDR gets an instant EPG that you can then record from instantly.

With a 1Tb HDD boot time is about 27 seconds.
Loading the EPG takes about 45 seconds.

Haven't had any problems with it, lock ups, failed recordings for over a year now. (I generally use padding at the end)

Strange that certainly does not happen to me (neither to the above poster). Have you tried it again.

I was going to say "well how stupid is it to discard the cached EPG, especially is it's kept perfectly up-to-date with the trickle feed" - but I guess that would lead us back to the same arguments about whether this change is stupid or not.

However, (and sorry, because I think I've said this before), I don't reckon 40 seconds is long enough to grab the whole EPG. Try powering the box down for days, then booting it from cold. My recollection is that it takes about 3 minutes before you have a fully populated EPG, not 40 seconds (though it's not something I've done often!).

So I'm not convinced that the Humax box is doing what you think Graham. It might be doing something similar. It's certainly not doing anything useful IMO!

It only happened once, I just tried now and its ok.

I assume it must have been because it was halfway through downloading the EPG when I went to watch the program, its then paused the download meaning I couldnt record until the play was stopped and the download was completed.

Try doing a factory reset which wipes everything and then press guide it still takes about 40 seconds. Once you get the background video and audio back tuner 1 has finished the epg download.

This the only time I ever use the guide button.

If you boot the box after it's been off for a while and immediately start an instant recording (tying up the tuner) then pressing guide will never finish grabbing the epg.

What do you mean by off ?. Powered down at the mains ?. If so that's just like a factory reset it's the one time you need guide as i have posted ad nausea. If you mean low power sby, it gets a whole new epg overnight anyway. If you use the box in a way it's not designed to be used of course you will get problems. Been away for 2-3 weeks and booted the box it always works as expected. there's some clutching at straws round here

No, I mean sby. If I go home tonight bring the box out of sby and decide to record what I see, the tuner is tied, then previously set timers fire for the rest of the evening and it is impossible to set any future recordings until a tuner becomes available.

This is probably the 4th or 5th time I asked with no reply, why does the box need 2 tuners free to d/l the EPG when it should only need 1?

Presumably because the firmware requires tuner 1 (the only one guaranteed to have a lnb connection)

Are you saying if both tuners are recording you can't set a reservation while watching a recording ?.

I can, I just booted the box from full sby to bbc1 hd and started recording, tuned to channel 5 and started a second. Brought up media and started replay of a BBC1-HD recording, pressed guide, got an instant epg and set a recording reservation for this evening.

I have been doing this for over 2 years, it's never been a problem.

You don't need a tuner to set a reservation just an epg on the screen.

Pretty daft to have that restriction, on the other hand it would mean an even more annoying wait if you wanted to record while already recording.

It also doesnt update when playing back with 2 free tuners either.
