Will Display Port overtake HDMI sooner or later
For the record I have a TV with one DVI input, and I use an HDMI converter and separate audio lead for accessing my Sky Box output.
Well, that HDMI's preference over DVI sorted with to my next TV. But I see there is another interface called Display Port. Are manufacturers developing TV's that have both Display Port and HMDI in anticipation that HDMI will be superceded? |

DisplayPort is a digital display interface standard produced by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). It defines a royalty-free, digital audio/video interconnect, intended to be used primarily between a computer and its display, or a computer and a home-theater system.
DisplayPort, for all it's capabilities will only be used between a PC and a display or intermediate device such as a home theatre system. HDMI will continue to be developed and won't be superceded by it. It's a shame really VESA felt the need to bring this out when HDMI can do the same job, as having one universal type of interconnectivity interface simplifies things enormously.

http://www.displayport.org/ Whether it gets to be a replacement for HDMI on AV kit like disk players and TVs is another matter. |

HDMI has become far too ubiquitous to be superceded for quite some time. Look how long VGA has lasted despite the introduction of DVI.

Don't worry; even if it ever becomes ubiquitous Apple will release another proprietary connector or maybe even a full standard, so that they can push their high-profit adapters that they never really include with any of their overpriced, high-profit products.
Meanwhile other manufacturers do at least include connectors - I bought a Lenovo docking station and that included a DisplayPort (non mini) to DVI adapter. (I realise that it's a VESA standard, but Apple has really pushed it, specifically with the Apple-created mini-DisplayPort connector). They are already doing this with the release of the Thunderbolt Macs - the iMac cannot work in "target display mode" (where it becomes a monitor) unless connected via a Thunderbolt cable to another Thunderbolt Mac - or I guess a nice expensive adapter when one finally comes out. |
