what is the point, will it make the phone any better?

Never understand why people want to get equipment to do things they are not made to do.

minimum £20 top up on the SF, might as well just buy a phone around £120, that £20 top up is completely useless to me.

Although if i could get Orange Wednesdays while on giffgaff, that may well swing it......

Can't you just buy the phone for £100, unlock it for free using the link posted earlier and then use your Giffgaff sim in it? That's what I was going to do and what many SF users have already done...

My Galaxy Tab is a rooted device with Overcome 2.0 Gold ROM based upon Gingerbread. This means it is now overclocked to 1.4Ghz stable and it is slicker, quicker device with far less force closes and appplication failures than when new.

The same question could have been posed when overclocking PCs became widespread and modded graphics drivers were all the rage. People do it because they can.

I agree with this. I was apprehensive about getting a Wildfire after reading so many reviews complaining about the screen quality, but found it perfectly OK. I'm not going to be reading ebooks or watching full length films or anything, so I think the slightly reduced resolution was probably a good decision by HTC to maximise the limited processor speed.

There are a few graphic-intensive apps that run a bit slowly, or are not compatible with the Wildfire, but nothing that has been a real deal-breaker, for me.

The only feature that's not as good as my previous phone (nokia 5800) is the camera quality, particularly close-up shots.

But in most respects I've been really quite happy with the Wildfire, and the whole Android experience.

Actually the fact it can do it is proof that the manufacturers and mobile providers don't want you to do it. Quite often its a marketing thing to make you upgrade. Also rooting the phone gives you opportunity to completely mess it up which would increase their support costs.

There is no technical reason why gingerbread won't run on a desire or wildfire, and surprise surprise today HTC announce that they will be releasing gingerbread after all,

a tiny bit but only if you look at it with the light shining right on that part.

Unless that's only for the white version!

I may be wrong but it looks like you have to to order a minimum £20 topup with the order of the phone. I click checkout and it just keeps bringing me back to the top up page :P

I'm sure Orange have realised they're subsidising this phone and it's heading off to other networks which is probably why their insisting on a £20 top up.

Bugger, I think Orange have started doing that with all their PAYG phones bought direct from the website... shop around, might be better deals at an independent stockist. It's £109 at Argos, unfortunately Amazon is out of stock at the moment...

Can't believe folk were picking this phone up for £89 a few months back!
